Is following someone, the only way to be notified (emailed) about new postings or replies to a post we've made?

You can subscribe to a sub-forum (the little mail icon at the top right). This will notify you of all posts in that forum. At the bottom right there is a "Subscribe to topic" you can click for that particular topic.
