Anyone think it would be possible to create a conversion tool that takes a G2 psd template and converts the character to G3 psd?  An automated macro?

Unfortunately, there isn't a G2 PSD template. The G2 Templates were only available for Adobe Flash or DrawPlus so not in PSD format. Of course, there is nothing to stop you taking the appropriate angle sprites from a G2 character and making them into a G3 character using the G3 PSD Templates. However, you would have to do it manually.

You can take any G2 template. Export as SVG and easily reconstruct it in Photoshop.

You then just take that PSD go through all the click dicky stuff with the layer names and import it into CTA. Or import into an existing PSD template. It doesn't sound like it would be hard at all if that's what you really wanted to do, just a bit tedious work.

can you explain more how to Export as SVG? like where or what software do you use or what do you do?

whatever software you used to make your g2 template, You can use to export as SVC. it's usually in the File menu. Usually labeled export, and file extension is most assuredly labeled SVG. nothing much to explain really.

You can then import your SVG into photoshop. If that's what you're trying to do.

In your original post, you mentioned also converting a G2 photoshop template. Im sure that not what you meant, cause there is no such thing as a photoshop g2 template. Did you mean to ask something different?

Also, the only real difference between g3 and g3 is that g3 is raster-based. Only have one angle. There's no puppeteering and there's no mocap compatibility.
So realistically to convert a g2 into a g3 what you do is delete all the extra angle sprites so that don't have any angles other than the front. Don't use any of the motion features, and if you want to rasterize the sprites, just go to sprite editor, launch them in photoshop, save then, and that will stirp away the resolution independence of vector and convert to raster format.

How does it work with mouth sprites for lip sync.  Do you have to convert each sprite manually?
