The following is just a proff of concept but I thought I would share my early thoughts

I have also been trying to put an image into the squares but no luck yet.
I have tried to put a picture in the top left corner the image is loaded into the material channel but is not showing ?
As I say these are early tests lots more todo.
Forgot to say these are created with a python script.

Yeah, I have a script that does this, but for light bulbs (like animated chasing lights), although it could be adapted to do exactly this.
I always meant to show it off but got distracted by other projects. I'll share it later if anyone wants.
