I know it makes sense to play in "by frame" mode, bake Soft Cloth and turn SC off so it doesn't disturb in real time.
But does it make sense to do that before render? Or will iClone recalculate while rendering anyway even if SC is "off" during render?

The point of baking Soft Cloth and then turning SC off is indeed done to prevent iClone from recalculating during rendering, which will not work always that well.
Baked Soft Cloth works as a regular animation clip in that regard.
