Is that a custom decal? What it looks like is that it is missing the opacity information that will hide the grey part.

I have the same problem. I was following along with the CC2 Learning resources on decals and as soon as I activated a decal, it was grayed out.
I used the same decal as they did in the video. Anybody else have this issue?

I tried this with one of the CC1 characters (the Appearance Editor is not yet compatible with CC3 characters) and was able to apply a decal to the head:

I used a scar from ...\Reallusion\Resources\3. CC Essential Morphs & Skin - Custom Texture\Decal\Scar. For each scar there are three textures: Diffuse, Normal (_N) and Specular (_S).
I loaded the textures into the Diffuse, Normal, and Specular channels, and then adjusted the position and the scale to make it fit the way I wanted.
Here is another example:

If you are importing your own image, you may need to add a mask. A JPG will not have transparency, for instance.

It's the CC1 Substance version of the characters that cause trouble. I could repeat the issue by loading one of those characters. As soon as you select enable for the decal, you get a grey strip,
In my earlier example, I used one of the characters under Base/Essential Morphs. These are from the older CC1 Essential Morph pack. I selected the Asian Woman.
This version has no Enable checkbox for the decal. You can load in the maps directly, as shown in the screen capture in my previous post.

You are lucky you can even get a decal, grey or otherwise, onto the avatar! I get nothing, be in jpeg or png BUT have no problems in CC2. So, is there a bug of some sort in CC3? What is different? It looks pretty much like CC2 so cannot understand why I get nothing!

Decals will work in CC3 but as previously explained you will need to use a CC1 Base character from the "CC1_Base Substance" folder. The Appearance Editor does not work with CC3 Base characters.
Then when you use the Appearance Editor the decals can be loaded (see below). The decal textures you need are shown. You will need at a minimum the diffuse and the mask.

Please Note: The CC1 Base character can be converted to CC3 and even use the Digital Human Shader if required.

Thanks Peter. I was having problems getting a decal onto cloth! Got it working but realise that as I am creating a head from Headshot and it needs tattoos, the base is, I guess by default, male CC3, so I have to put the head onto a base CC1? What is the head? CC3? So I have to convert the head to CC1? In fact I am now totally unsure of the whole procedure! I think at this rate it might be easier to add the tats using tracking in After Effects. Please tell me the whole thing is a lot easier than it seems!

Hi Garry
Headshot only works with CC3 Base characters. You also can't convert CC3 back to CC1 so you won't be able to take a Headshot created head and use the Appearance Editor with it.
Once the HD Skin Generator (aka Appearance Editor 2) arrives in Q2 you will be able to work directly with CC3 Base characters. For now the only way to use the Appearance Editor to add decals is to start with a CC1 Base character and convert up to CC3. However, these restrictions only apply to skin textures. All clothing can be used with the Appearance Editor to add decals etc so there should be no problems there.
