Preview Rendering takes forever

Not sure If I am missing something
But  I have an Nvidia 1070 GTX   and 64 Gb PC Memory

When I load an example project, and do preview rendering,  it takes forever...  it's been 10 minutes  and only 470 out of 1000 done
So I changed it to 200,  but still taking forever.

When i watched Kai's video it takes seconds... so  what am I missing here for the preview render?

Looking at the screen it uses the GPU and CPU for it.

another issue is,  every time i try to move the camera,    Iclone keeps Freezing up when I have the Iray preview up

By Rampa - 7 Years Ago
Make sure that you are optimizing the VRAM usage of your card. That's what gives you the speed. If you go over your VRAM to system RAM, it will be really slow.

By pka4916 - 7 Years Ago
I checked the video, and setup like that as well.
It still takes forever..  every little move and it takes minutes before i can do something
Iclone keeps freezing up for a while, and then it does something.
Set the count to 150, and it still takes about 4-5 minutes.
idk why it takes so long.

Something is wrong, I think

Uninstall and reinstall iRay with a fresh download from your account.
Update your graphics driver. Make sure to do a custom install so you can totally replace the old driver.
By justaviking - 7 Years Ago
1) I agrre with Rampa - something is definitely wrong.  It should not be THAT slow
2) Which "sample project" are you opening?
3) Are you on a laptop?

4) Are you sure it's running on your GPU and not your CPU?  Seems more likely to be an issue on a laptop because of the way they get configured for low-power operations.

4.1) Download the free "GPU-Z" and run that to monitor your graphics card while doing the test.  Does the GPU memory usage and "Load" increase when you open the project?  It is filling - and exceeding - your available VRAM memory on the graphics card?
By pka4916 - 7 Years Ago
I downloaded it this morning, and installed it, after removing it.
Will check again when I get home with the new install.
but before:
I load the project  and it's processing,  5 Gb is used out of 8  .  (in the main viewer it's using 0.5 Gb)
I am using the sample project that came with either a Training or default install I think.  Otherwise it's one of my many purchases.
It's located under projects at the top.  an house torned down on a hill seems like it.. with some trees.

I am using a Laptop indeed,   (https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-G752VS)
Upgraded to 64 Gb Ram,  and 8 TB SSD space total
and a 1070 GTX card with 8 Gb

ok Tried it, and still the same problem..
it becomes impossible to work with Iray for me.
even 100 count, takes forever.. and freezing up.

The key thing I'm seeing in the log you shared (thank you) is:
1.0   IRAY   rend warn : There is no CUDA-capable GPU available to the iray photoreal renderer.
1.0   IRT    rend info : Resource assignment for host 0 has changed.
1.0   IRAY   rend info : CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1070): compute capability 6.1, 8 GiB total, 5.88661 GiB available, display attached
1.0   IRAY   rend info : iray photoreal CPU fallback is enabled.

It seems to confirm my suspicion that you're rendering on your CPU.
Now the question is, "Why?"  I don't know, yet.

There is probably an Nvidia setting somewhere that can enable your GTX 1070 for Iray, or make it the default, or something like that.  I'm not sure where exactly that is.

I am having the same problem.
I think these are the pertinent lines from the iray render log.

1.6 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): Kernel [6] (EnvironmentMatte ) failed after 0.008s
1.6 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): an illegal instruction was encountered (while launching CUDA renderer in core_renderer_wf.cpp:771)

1.3 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 1 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): Failed to update ior stack
1.3 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 1 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): Device failed while rendering
1.3 IRAY rend warn : All available GPUs failed.
1.3 IRAY rend warn : No devices activated. Enabling CPU fallback.
1.3 IRAY rend warn : Re-rendering iteration because of device failure
1.2 IRAY rend error: All workers failed: aborting render
1.3 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 1 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): an illegal instruction was encountered (while de-allocating memory)
1.2 IRAY rend error: CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1080 Ti): an illegal instruction was encountered (while de-allocating memory)

BTW I used IRAY in DAZ studio and everything worked fine there. Also, I have been using IRAY in iclone since it came out without any problems until yesterday. I have all the latest drivers. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

Try going into your "Iray Render Settings" and click on "Hardware Settings". Now check to see which graphics cards are listed and ensure the right one is checked.

Then for the purposes of testing, take out the check from CPU which will force the Iray rendering to use only the chosen graphics card. Does this improve or worsen the time it takes to preview render?

I've got the GTX 1080 t1 using the Nvidia 411.70 driver. It worked fast. I upgraded the driver to the latest 418.11 and I immediately got the GPU "out of memory" as soon as the render started. I rolled back the driver to 411.70 and everything is fast again. Don't know if this could be your problem.
By ckalan1 - 7 Years Ago
Thanks for the tip. I rolled back to the older driver and now IRAY is working again with small projects. It seems to be having problems with complex scenes.
FYI - The new driver worked in Daz Studio as well as the old driver.

It seems to be having problems with complex scenes.

Glad it helped. As for the complicated scenes, I loaded a project with a bunch of Speed Tree grasses and trees and sunflowers and iRay choked and disappeared off the screen but it left iClone standing. I guess that's a good thing.

By animagic - 7 Years Ago
If you have complex scenes, it does help save resources if you hide anything in the Scene Manager that's not in view, reflects, or casts a shadow.

So if you have an animation with different camera angles, it would be better to render one camera angle at the time, allowing you to hide items that do not contribute to the scene.

I only have 1 Graphics card. and that is the 1070
I did try uncheck CPU and then it seems to me, that there is no difference at all.

I might have to do that,  even though I am not getting a memory error,  but I do have the latest driver installed
By pka4916 - 7 Years Ago
Installed the 411.70 driver, and no difference.
I did notice that even if your done with a preview and close it,  it doesn't free up the GPU memory.
I start out with 4.5 Gb  and when doing is 2-3 times, it's at 7.5 Gb.
Even closing the preview doesn't release the memory. or whatever.
Played with all the settings, and the only one that makes somewhat a difference is when I change the preview screen size to 320x240 and zoom in.
The default 1000 x something,  is making is slow..   even 640x480 preview is slow.

How does the smartcache work?  do you need to enable something, since I don't see a difference.
Then I still have the fact, that once it's done, and I zoom in or move the camera, it's still take a long time before I can move again.. there is a huge deley between the movement
and the preview starts doing something.

The only other thing I can think of is your texture compression. Is it set to "none"? Me, I have it on medium. Also check how big the texture sizes you allow in your project settings. Other than that, I don't have a clue.

I totally missed this post.
That is a good question,  I do see the GPU running up to 7.5 Gb.  but the logs tells me otherwise.
Maybe a staf Member can answer this one.

I checked the settings, and I don't see anything.
Are there other 1070 users out there?   I know Kai used a 1080..  Maybe he knows,  if he is watching this :)

I tried Max / Medium  None.
Tried   2048 x 2048,   1024x1024,   512x512
It makes all no difference.
I just commented to another post (see above)   that might explain why it's not working for me.

ok made another test, just in case
Can you tell me if in the 1st part the GPU is not used again?
I made 3 sections
1= GPU+ CPU
2 = GPU
3= GPU + CPU  with Iclone Added to the control panel from Nvidia under Manage 3D settings.
I didn't see any improvement, but looks like the log is different.

The logs seem to show you are previewing in 'Photoreal' mode -- that will definitely take longer.  Try changing the mode to 'Interactive' and see if it improves.

I tried that, and it's a little bit faster, but still takes forever.
If I look at Kai's video,  it takes seconde with a 1080 card.
I cannot get it that fast as in the video..

I almost want to ask for  project  or how someone else has all the setting for iclone and iray.
