iRay, DOF, and HitFilm

When I tried to render something fairly close to the camera in iRay, the whole picture came out kind of blurry.  I experimented with a few sliders and found that you could affect the DOF that way (after several trial and error renders).  When iRay first came out I was sort of intrigued with the 'other' outputs that you could get from iRay -- most importantly, a depth map.  So tonight I rendered a simple scene in iClone (DOF off) and turned on the depth map output as well as RGB.  I copied both images into HitFilm and used the Depth image as the source for the 'Lens Blur' effect.  Once you have that set up, you can 'rack focus' on any part of the scene.  Maybe not a big deal for some, but we are all learning, right?  Anyhow, here are the images:
1) iRay render
2) iRay depth
3) HitFilm 'near' focus
4) HifFilm 'far' focus
My graphic card is only 1050 ti, so I purposely used low qualify, smaller files to save time.
I'm still trying to figure out if I can use the depth map in HitFilm to position particle effects in 3D space -- the manual is not exactly clear about that...
