Glad you mentioned this -- we really ought to post this in the iClone forum as well (I was actually going to do an almost identical post to yours after getting their email).
3D Coat is one of those tools that needs to be in everyone's toolkit, no matter what you do in 3D (it's kind of the Swiss Army Knife of 3D tools). I cannot recommend it enough.

What is the version upgrade pricing like? Is it an annoying overly expensive annual thing like Hitfilm?

Free upgrades, I've had over 10 free major updates since purchasing several years ago. Great support system as well.. And yes the subscription plan sucks, I'm about done with Adobe.
Again I don't want to take away from RL's paying customers, 3DCoat just helps take CC character customization to the next level.
