So really then, this 'Curve"Editor' (if I'm understanding correctly) - displays a whole lot of mostly 'rotational' data. And rotational data is somewhat meaningless since so many limbs are pivoting in all different directions during complex moves. To make the curve editor data 'meaningful', you really have to view data coming from positions or translations - and so you have to add reach effectors to 'monitor' translation data ..... Would that be correct? - or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think I understand what you're saying, but I also think you're missing a piece of the puzzle.
If you grab a hand and "move" (translate) it horizontally in the +X direction, that actual movement if achieved through the rotation of the shoulder and elbow joints.
It is through the miracle of IK (inverse kinematics) that you are able to "move the hand horizontally," and IK automagically does the joint rotation math for you. But it really is joint rotation that is occurring. If not joint rotation, you'd be stretching the bones.

Yes Dennis .... so to make use of the Curve Editor (to move the lines around), it seems the only 'type' of data that's easy to understand is that of 'position' data. Example - a complex move of the 'arms' a) hanging down at the avatar's side - then changing to: b) folded on the avatar's chest If I were to 'view' that data, all I'd see is a whole lot of 'rotations' graphed in the Curve Editor (rotations of shoulders, elbows etc). To 'alter' any part of that move would be extremely difficult if not impossible since they're all moving in X,Y,Z space at the same time - yes? But *if* there was 'position' data displayed instead, then it would be a whole lot easier to adjust the move. And the only way to get that 'position' data to appear in the editor - is to add an object (reach target sphere) - allowing a meaningful graph line that would now show-up in the Curve Editor.
To me (unless there's a way I've overlooked), it seems the only way to view and easily adjust things in the Curve Editor - is to add effectors .....

To be honest, I haven't used the Curve Editor much for quite a while, but you should be able to select a lot of curve data all at one time, and select "one" end effector (handle), so at least you shouldn't need to do it joint-by-joint and curve-by-curve.
Hopefully someone with more recent and extensive experience will be able to offer some more in-depth advice.
Good luck.
