Is there a shortcut to set the beginning and end flags to the current position on the timeline in CT 8? If not, it'd be very handy.

Unfortunately there isn't keyboard shortcuts that sets the beginning and end flags on the timeline, however there are many other keyboard shortcuts for the timeline that can be a time saver. You can find them in the Online Manual under Keyboard Shortcuts > Timeline Shortcuts.
