Hi: You can do that with the opacity slider. On frame #1, set all of the avatars components to "0" on the opacity slider. Skip ahead on the time line to where you want him to appear completely and reset all of the components to 100%. The distance between the two settings determines how fast the avatar will appear. Short distance = quickly Long distance=slow.
Hope this helps. pete

There is always the Opacity setting that can be used to fade in and out with.

EDIT: Ah, cross post with Peter.

A couple quick ideas: 1) Keyframe the OPACITY channel STRENGTH. However, with multiple materials involved, that might be laborious, though you might be able to multi-select the materials. 2) Do it in your favorite NLE (video editor). Render the scene with and without the character, and blend (dissolve) the two clips in the video editor and the character will "appear" over time.
ADDED: Wow, a lot of simultaneous responses being typed.

I have done this by selecting the character and changing the opacity of all associated items (selected all at once). There have been times when I wanted to manipulate the opacity that I would need to work with attached items individually.
