Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I just feel like this needs to be said!!
Start looking for tutorials on YouTube. That's what got me started. Just get started with doing something.
I'm also a pet portrait artist when I'm not animating and I can't tell you how much YouTube has helped me in my journey.
