So....I realize I'm on thin ice as to looking like a total noob but "Damn the Torpedoes, full speed ahead." My 'activate appearance editor' button
is grayed out on my CC2 so I went looking to see if it was a feature I had to purchase. I couldn't find anything on it even with google hunting for it.
What am I missing? Any help will be greatly appreciated. ;)

You just need to select which Substance it should use for each body part or cloth. :) Click on the little Allegorithmic flame icon to choose.
