I'm having trouble figuring out how to make iClone images photorealistic, does it have anything to do with the discontinued plug-in Indigo? Why was it discontinued in the first place? If not, how do I get the photorealistic affect in a video format? Is there a tutorial for this, I can't seem to find one?

If you bought the plug-in prior to iC7, you can download a version that's compatible and works with iC7. See your member account page for your purchases, and download the newest version.
If you didn't buy it before, is it still available for purchase? I don't know; I already owned it so I haven't tried to buy it lately.

It should also be pointed out that the Reallusion Indigo plugin does not support PBR or Popcorn FX. Aside from that the last released version for use with iClone 7 does work with the latest full version of Indigo RT - with the known limitation that it is just about all but useless for anything other that stills.

I am going to go on record saying, NO - you cannot make photo realistic images in iClone. Can you make images look good? Yes, absolutely. Photoreal? No. Not without a real raytrace component.

I tend to agree. You can make your iclone videos look better by adding LUT effects within iclone or add looks and other effects like grain, in post production editors like After Effects or Hitfilm, to give your videos a more 'real' movie look.

Well, that's my mantra about iClone in general -- iClone is for ANIMATION. There are far better programs out there for stills, and trying to do photo-real in animation is a fool's errand. No one really cares or notices all that much (I think, in general, folks spend way too much time worrying about the quality and details of their test "stills" and I'm NEVER impressed when someone shows me a still from their project. Show me it animated or don't waste my time).

If they released some Octane Plugin to augment PBR with Raytrace reflections, refractions, and ambient occlusion....fantastic... But, it wouldn't have to be Octane at all. It could be RL's own system, or some less expensive alternative to Octane that is similar, like FStorm Renderer. But, Octane would be fantastic...if it included an ORBX exporter, which would then allow integration into the Octane Standalone...:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:!!!!!!!
THIS WOULD BE GOLD.

I've said this many times... When the Indigo plug-in was released, I had hoped it would be followed by others. My assumption was the first plug-in would be the hardest, but once you have the "infrastructure" in place, follow-on plug-ins to other renderers would be easier. Not easy, but less work, and Reallusion would have lessons-learned the could leverage. Apparently their lesson-learned is, "Don't interface to other renderers."

James Martin (I think that's his name) alluded to the possibility of alternate renderers thanks to the plug-in architecture, but it never came to that.

Hearing what everyone is saying about the Indigo plug-in is VERY disappointing. Against my better judgement I went ahead and purchased iClone7 and a new PC that would run iClone7 since my old system was outdated. Furthermore after being sold on the realtime engine and the simplicity of the program and seeing the advertisement of the Indigo plugin, I decided to invest my money.
I've put a lot of money and years trying to become proficient with Poser but it just seemed too difficult whenever you wanted to get "fancy" with the animations. I was really looking forward to using the Indigo product because of the realism it advertised but now to find out that I won't be creating near photorealistic animations in iClone7 is a huge let down to me!
Since I already purchased the product along with 3Dxchange I still plan on using it of course. I'm hoping to learn enough about LUTS as it's mentioned here or whatever else I can find tutorial wise that can help me produce at least near photorealistic quality with iClone7.
Now I know why I wasn't seeing anybody create realism with the iClone products. Bummer...

If you are looking to create a "filmic" look, rather than a photo-realistic one, then that is quite possible with iClone 7. Even in life-action movies, directors often strive to obtain a certain look that is not necessarily "photo-realistic".
You also have to realize that creating completely realistic animation, which would be a necessity IMO with a photo-realistic look, is extremely hard.

iClone can do good photo realistic renders. The images below are from a png. image sequence render using one the default demo projects provided with iClone 7.

Hi and thanks! I've seen this in iClone, I just wonder how they achieved the look and how I can do the same thing with animation. What products were used? What did they use for lighting? If anyone can pass some expertise that would be wonderful!

Assuming you own iClone, just open up the SAMPLE PROJECT and start exploring. :) It is an "animation" project. Just press "Play" and if you want, "Render."

pcdude40 (2/5/2018) Hi and thanks! I've seen this in iClone, I just wonder how they achieved the look and how I can do the same thing with animation. What products were used? What did they use for lighting? If anyone can pass some expertise that would be wonderful! I've also red you previous message about *photoreal animation in iClone7*.
As we all have been at some point, you are victim of the software with the big red button labelled "create the movie - or game - I have in mind" syndrome. Don't worry, that's curable.
iClone 7 is capable of creating *photoreal* (I prefer myself the term *plausible*) rendering and *plausible* animations, and I agree with @Kelleytoons we have yet to see a AAA iClone project that combines both at top level. (I have nothing against *cartoonish* rendering though, but since you mention *photoreal*, lets focus on that). There are some peoples here, from this forum, who are working on that, and I believe it won't be long before we start seeing interesting results in both areas (rendering and animation/motion). But that's not that easy, even for advanced users, I have to give you that.
To clarify what I mean by *plausible* rendering, here are two examples - still images - I did during the beta testing of iClone 7:

I wouldn't get more "plausible" results than those if I used Indigo, VRay, Renderman, Octane or any other renderer, pathtracer or not. But those are still images. And again, the challenge is then to maintain that *plausability* with animations, in every situations and environments. Not mentioning characters facial and lipsync animations. But it is possible. So now that you know you got the right tool, what else ?
What you are after is not "the right tool" but the knowledge of what makes an image, a rendering, a drawing *photoreal* or *plausible* applied to CGI. If you don't know a minimum about that, Poser, iClone, etc.. or not wont really help. If you know, you will be able to create such images with different tools, not only iClone. Some peoples are even able to create photorealistic drawings, because, aside their talent, they know what they are doing and they understand lighting and materials. This knowledge can not be summarized in a few lines and there is no magic receipt.
In general, this is how it works: 1) You assume the responsibility to acquire more knowledge about the domain (CGI, photorealistic rendering, lighting, materials, etc..) 2) Then you try to apply your knowledge to iClone, granted you learn the tool (ie read the docs). 3) You post your tests/wip/etc.. in the forum. 4) We tell you what we think is wrong or not and we try to guide you toward the right principles, methods and settings in order to achieve your goal(s).
This is, I believe, what we all do, this is how we learn and progress. There is no secret but acquiring knowledge and doing serious work.

Wow! That's a lot to digest all at once. I hear what your saying and I agree with you and to clarify, I'm a retired techie, so I'm not a newbie with it comes to technology. Now don't get me wrong, I completely understand that being a techie doesn't mean I'm good at animating or being a CGI artist, I only mention this because I've been dabbling in animation for some time now and I know the capability of what technology can do in regard to rendering animations. I also understand that iClone7 is not Maya or 3DS Max, or any other "high end" software. What I do know is I see the advertisements that Reallusion sold me on when I first started considering the software. So I know it must be capable of creating some nice work.
Still, I'm very new to iClone7. I've used Daz Studio, Bryce, Vue, Carrara and Poser. Although I'm far from ever being an "expert" with any of these applications, I did spend significant time learning and producing some very "plausible" as you say animations.
Since I am new here, I wanted to reach out and get some feedback on what I can really expect to accomplish with iClone7. As time goes on and as I am retired now, I definitely can put in the time to learn it and hopefully produce some work that pleases me and maybe others. I really like what you posted and I appreciate your feedback!
Thanks!
BTW - the examples you shared are what I'm looking to accomplish.

your technical background will help you greatly. Iclone for the most part is very simple, in the sense that a pencil, hammer and a screwdriver are very simple.. so, when I say simple, it's not to be confused with limited, each of the tools have a simple logical application, once you understand what each tool does to your scene, you'll be creating logical workflows to make masterpieces quickly and accurately. You'll be able to look at a movie , and know what tools and techniques to do with iclone to match that scene.
