Workflow:
Send the character to 3DXchange, select the hairmesh and hit "export selected". Then import into 3DCoat with followed settings.
(Hope this dosent violate any license agreement for further DDC)

What is the Goal for you with this Hair in the voxelroom ? 
If you want painting on it, then you need  import it per pixelpainting option .

Goal was to see if I could export the hair only to use in other DCC tools or 3rd. party renders (and helping others :) )

But import in voxel Room is not a good Idea . Like to see in the picture why
The Mesh Looks strange
 in 3D coat you can import for different task in different ways
.e.g. For Morphing you need Option  micro vertex . For Painting Option  per  pixel
