Greetings all:
Well, I have sent this on to tech support but they are now having to send it on to their development team. I am hoping maybe some of you might have a suggestion. I am running Windows 10 on Surface Pro 4 with all the latest updates.
When I first purchased both CrazyTalk and Animator about a month ago both were running. I have since then purchased several assets and all of that seemed to be working as well until about 3 weeks ago. Now when I launch either program, the minute I load an asset and attempt to do anything to it (script, automotion, etc.) the entire software locks up and I have to force it closed with Task Manager. I thought it was working again about a week ago but the problem has returned.
I had such high hopes and would rather not have to engage my credit card company to get a refund so I am trying to exhaust every resource before resorting to that. I believe Reallusion is a solid company and see all the good reviews on here and other places about their products but as of now I am out over $200 for software that I cannot get to work.
Some ideas I thought might be the issue...
1) The assets I purchased said Mac/Windows at the point of purchase but when I look at software history for downloads they seem to say Mac version. A Mac version asset would not even load in the Windows version right? Or could that be the issue (although it seems to happen with any asset I load).
2) Is anyone else running on Surface Pro? I am concerned that it might be an incompatible hardware issue that cannot be resolved.
Well, again, I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater so any advice anyone could give would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with CrazyTalk 8.
Firstly have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest full version of CrazyTalk 8 which is 8.1. This is definitely worth a try and all your content will still be there when you reinstall so you won't need to reinstall all your content again.
On the other points you raise, content that you purchase from the Content Store is in a format that is compatible with both Windows and Mac versions. This content is installed by the Content Downloader and providing it was installed successfully (check the log) then it shouldn't be a problem.
Regarding the Surface Pro 4, I have personally run CT8 on the Surface and apart from the small icon and font issues due to the Surface's high resolution screen, the actual program run well and there were no issues loading content.
One thing to check with the Surface is that if you always turn it off by clicking the on/off button on the top, try doing a complete shutdown and then restart the Surface and try again. I have found that after long periods of use without ever shutting down the Surface can cause strange behaviour in some apps.

Peter:
First thanks for your response. I have tried all of the things you mentioned to no avail. I am now trying to backtrack through the software update and installation history and try to see if there is some kind of clash between what is installed.
It is comforting to know that you have ran it successfully in a similar environment. It is that much more frustrating that it was up and running great for several days before this problem began.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again,
Joel

Hi Joel,
Sorry to hear nothing has helped. Technical Support will probably be your best bet for a solution. Hopefully they will get back to you soon.
One thing to think about is if you have installed some app or utility recently that may be conflicting with CrazyTalk 8. You could try shutting down everything else that may be running in the background (Press the "Show Hidden Icons" button on the Task Bar). Do also check you have plenty of free hard drive space available as this could be an issue on the Surface where free space is at a premium due to the small SSD drives.

Okay...I have made some progress on my end. When I roll back the most recent Windows updates back to build 1607 version 14393.0 then it seems to fix the problem.
But if I reinstall the most recent updates which brings the machine up to 14393.576 then the crashing returns. In particular there is an security update for Flash included in that which seems to be the core problem.
I have sent this on to tech support but wanted to update it here in case anyone else could use this information. Not sure if this applies to other machines, but clearly the current version of software is not compatible with the most recent Windows 10 updates.
Hope that helps others...
Joel

Well, I had everything up and running and then made the mistake of upgrading CrayTalk 8 to the Pro version. And of course, now the crashing has returned. You had said (Tutor) that you are running on a Surface Pro...do you mind telling me what build/version you are on? Also, what version of Flash?
My last interaction with techsupport during the last set of crashes basically said the problem was exclusive to my machine and well, good luck and God bless. I am sure these are good people who love their children and pay their taxes, but I am astounded at the authentic lack of genuine concern for "real" tech support on these types of issues. Tragic and sad...
Thanks in advance for your help...
Joel

Well, I might actually be making some progress...it seems that it isn't "crashing" per se, but on Surface Pro 4 under certain resolutions, certain dialogue boxes aren't displaying on the screen. So you can't interact with the dialogue box to move the software forward. If you hit the escape key a few times, the software returns control to the main interface, but you can see the issue.
I have located a few other threads on different ways people have approached this but I was hoping you might disregard my prior question and instead share what resolution you are running at?
Thanks!

Hi Joel,
Really sorry to hear you are now having problems with CrazyTalk 8 Pro.
I'm currently running the insider preview version 15007 on my Surface Pro 4 but even with this preview build CrazyTalk 8 is as stable as a rock. In fact while other apps have been having problems with 15007, CrazyTalk 8 remains the most stable which is why it is surprising you are having so many issues.
It may seem a little drastic but maybe at some point you may like to consider a reset of your Surface. You can do this by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset This PC. I did this a while ago and it did help with some other apps I was having problems with so it may help you with CrazyTalk.

Thanks Peter....do you mind telling me what resolution you are running at and whether you have changed any other display settings under Customize the Display?
Thanks again for your help...and I'm sorry I was a little snarky about RL tech support earlier...it has just been incredibly frustrating.
Thanks again,
Joel

And one more thing that may even narrow the problem down further...it only seems to happen when I am attempting to load an audio file onto a character. It just sits there...whether it is a spoken recorded audio or a imported file. It even does it I try to select some of the voice sample files included with the program (arrogant, etc.).
Thanks again,
Joel

Hi Joel,
I can certainly understand the frustration over this issue. Sadly it does seem an issue with your particular Surface as I don't seem to experience the same issues.
For the display I'm using the default resolution and configuration. I haven't changed any display settings to run CrazyTalk 8. I also had a try creating a script and again couldn't find any problems loading an audio file, creating a script using TTS or loading one of the sample audio files.
Although I tend to use my main computer to run CrazyTalk 8 most of the time, I do use the Surface when I'm travelling and don't find any problems apart from the small icon and font size due to the high resolution screen used on the Surface.

Peter:
I am posting this info for others who might read this thread. Tech support was suspicious of the dual monitor/resolution issue as well. So I did complete reinstall without the second monitor attached and it still didn't seem to fix it. But then I changed the resolution settings on both monitors to the recommended settings with no enlarged fonts, etc. it worked! I also am able to now change the resolutions back to what I need to be able to see the stuff on the Surface Pro 4 (my old eyes can't read it when it is that small!)
Thanks for your help in troubleshooting!
Joel
