I am considering investing in the X-box 1 Kinect sensor and the Iclone plugin for motion capture. I'd love to hear from anyone who uses it to review its pros and cons.

I have the first generation, but still haven´t used it that much, so I can´t draw a final conclusion.

In fact I would like to expand your question. Is the 2nd generation Kinect so much better than the 1st?

Having looked at some video samples posted of mocaps, the results look very jittery and jerky.
By JIX - 10 Years Ago
Well, you have to tweak them, but apparently nobody is using mocaps, huh? ;)
By Cary B - 10 Years Ago
I guess not. I think the mocap samples I saw online may have  already been tweaked, but were still very clunky. I've searched out other threads on this product and haven't found much on version 2. It may be that it's just too much trouble to use. maybe I'll try to save up for the higher end mocap stuff.

Did you also watch this RL tutorial?

I think in the long run the high end mocap stuff is the way to go, but because of its current price tag it only makes sense, if you are going to use it seriously.

Keep in mind that if you want to capture samba for instance, you have to learn that before, or get someone who can perform it. ;)

Yeah, guess I better start brushing up on my samba...  I did look at the RL tutorials, but this simple, single mocap of a basketball shoot doesn't really give me an idea if the product can capture decent quality movements of some complexity on a consistent basis. I currently spend a lot of time messing with existing clips to get the right accents of movement to match with dialog and to get the right kind of body language for a character. If I could make my own it would speed up the process,  I don't want to be spending a lot of time cleaning and fixing up the captures, as that would kind of defeat the purpose.

I hear ya. I´ll keep you informed, when I found the time to test my Kinect.

Meanwhile I´m going for the sa sa salsa. In some cases the real life experience is unbeatable anyway. Hola chica! :D

Some time ago, Rampa did a tutorial on how to use Direct Puppet to combine motions in place (without using Collect Clip) here: https://forum.reallusion.com/296010/Quick-Tip-Mixdown-all-your-clips-to-one-in-place. You basically record with Direct Puppet, which will blend the motions, but you keep the mouse stationary as you're not adding anything. Rampa suggests that doing this has a smoothing effect that may be useful for Kinect-recorded Mocap.

It is subtle though. But you can greatly enhance any smoothing it does, and introduce some additional smoothing by using another trick from 3DTest. This will have a stonger effect.

Interesting! Wondering why RL hasen´t added any kind of smoothing ...

Thanks much for the info. Do you know if the capture in the video was from the original kinect or from version 2?     I understand this product is not to be compared with the high end perception neuron ... but that cost is out of my league at the moment.  And, I'm wondering if the high end version might need its own extensive cleanup work as well.

I am a writer, an actor and movie maker and was only introduced to Iclone less than a year ago. So, I've learned a lot, but I have no other experience in 3d animation or creation or a lot of the attendant software programs. I don't even know what a curve editor is.

I don't really want to capture dance movements.
The project I am working on --purely for my own enjoyment-- is an animated superhero series, based on some of my creations from the past. The motion clips are my main animation tools. But I wanted to try to individualize the characters more. What I want to do is make the villain posture with a certain arrogance, give the cocky young superhero a bit of youthful flair, give the armored characters a heavier kind of movement and so on.

I thought the version 2 kinect could help with that, and the examples posted by RL look like it might be possible, but I don't know how heavily they have been worked on after the captures. But I'm trying to avoid investing the money and then finding out it will be too aggravating to make it work right.

So, thanks for the background.

Sure, it´s better to find out if it meets your needs before you buy, but in my experience sometimes there is no other way than testing yourself actually.

Kinect One is the 2nd generation and btw the dance was just an example of course. ;)
