Making Avatars' Body Parts Invisible

Hi all:

I'm working on an iClone Project just in time for Halloween, and I've run into a stumbling block.

I want to be able to make my avatars invisible...that is, make certain parts of them invisible, while leaving the rest visible. I've pretty much figured out how to do that (Opacity, Specular, and Glossiness to 0, or just remove images/props/parts I don't need), but not quite *all* the parts I want.

On one avatar (Camila), I can't figure out how to make her choker disappear, and on all the others, I can't get the mouth to vanish. I can remove the image of the teeth, but then, I have this black blob hovering in space. It really detracts from my test projects to see a disembodied mouth/throat floating around.

I'm using iClone 4.01.1012 Standard.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks:

Doug

I hope you still have some hair left... :P

I've played a little bit with iClone 3.x and it's not straightforward, but there is something you could try.  It should work the same in IC 4.  Note that you can not animate this but you can make the head disappear.  Before you do anything, you should probably save a copy of your character so that you will still have the original.

I assume you have a graphics editor associated with iClone; you can do that in Settings.  If you don't have one, try Paint.NET; it's free, simple, and will do the job.

The teeth, throat, and mouth all have a texture associated with them.  You will see that when you click the Mouth tab and then each of the radio buttons Teeth, Throat, and Tongue.  The Teeth has an Opacity map patterned after the teeth.  Click Lauch; the Opacity map will be opened in your graphics editor.  Make the map completely black, save it, and click Update.  This will get rid of the teeth.

There is no Opacity map for the tongue and the throat.  Create one, which can be a simple square graphic (256x256, for example) that is completely black.  Double click the Opacity icon for throat and tongue and load the black graphic.  This will take care of that.

The same procedure can be used to get rid of the eyes (separate for left and right).  You will also need to set the values of Glossiness and Specular to "0", otherwise a glow will remain.

The head is easier as it has an Opacity slider, but again Glossiness and Specular need to be set to "0", otherwise a glow remains.

A choker is a mystery.  You could save the clothes and boots and put them on another girl.  If you need the head for some reason, you could save that separately and put it on the same girl.

Here is a headless Camilla in an appropriate environment.  I think the choker looks kind of cute... ;)

Hi zuijlen:

I have Paint.net, in addition to several other photo editors (Adobe Photo Deluxe, IrfanView, etc.), but I've not associated them with iClone yet. I'll certainly look into your suggestions, but my idea (well, it's past Halloween now, so it's kinda pointless to continue the project) was to make everything from the neck up invisible for animation. Reducing the skin texture to 0 opacity wasn't hard, as was setting the Specular and Glossiness to 0, as well. Camila's choker was a bit of an oddity, but in preliminary tests, it seemed to do the trick and lent a bit more credibility to my project...a sort of "Headless Girl of iClone", in the same vein as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but with a bit of a comedic twist. It was also difficult to get *all* of her hair to disappear...it was easily rectified by replacing her current hair with a different one, then removing that.

As mentioned, I'll try your suggestion, and definitely try to work on something that can be animated. If there's less of a distraction than I have now, it'll be far better than having the black blob of the mouth/throat floating just above the girl's neck that just ruins the whole effect.

Thanks:

Doug

Doug, plenty of time for the next Halloween! Let us know how it works out when you get around to it.
