Since the launch of Character Creator, 3D character design has become more flexible and streamlined for everyone! This summer, we invite you to use Character Creator to create and design your own clothing, hair, shoes, and other accessories for our pre-rigged character bases. Thanks to Character Creator’s powerful conformation tools, your designs will be able to conform to any character body type you can imagine! Moreover, to have better subdivision in the case of mesh smoothing and high poly sculpting, you can export OBJ with quad mesh for further editing. By combining embedded morph options with other 3D tools, you have limitless options when it comes to designing your characters.

We would like to invite you to join Reallusion iClone 2016 - 3D Character Design Contest. Through this contest, we hope that more artists will be able to experiment, test out, and discover more creation possibilities with Character Creator, while learning from each other through Work-in-Progress threads in Polycount.
  • Allegorithmic Substance Painter and Substance Designer
  • HTC Vive VR Headset
  • Marmoset Toolbag
  • Marvelous Designer
  • Pixologic ZBrush

The winning entry will gain exposure with our media partners like ArtStation, Polycount, and 3DTotal.

Wow! I am going to be all over this like a bag of chips! :-)

My plan is ME! I am going to create a digital double of myself (Using CC, Zbrush, 3D Coat, Blender, Substance Painter, my Scanify face scanner and iClone.) and dress me up in a range of custom created outfits, hairstyles and costumes. I will become a Ninja from Mortal Kombat, a pirate from the Caribbean, a Wolverine inspired super hero, Conan the Barbarians brother and a medieval vampire prince, a Victorian aristocrat, a rootin tootin cowboy, a rock music legend, a war torn future solider and a grotty old Zombie!

This is the perfect chance to showcase the versatility of iClone CC and everything I have learned over the past 20 years....

I am definitely in and very excited!

Greetings,

I would love to take part in this contest once I get some of my technical issues resolved.

Are we limited to one entry, or can we do multiple?

Hi Vaei, we temporarily hide the sub-forum for a while, and now it's open: http://polycount.com/categories/reallusion-contest-2016
All the entry threads are still there. :)

Hello,

Hi Mythcons, paying tribute to the copyrighted characters is not forbidden to enter, however, we encourage entrants to create original designs which may get higher score based on the Judge Criteria in this contest. There are around 50% related to the originality.

I see a glaring flaw in this contest unless I missed it in the rules.
I don't see anywhere in the rules where you can't be part of a studio or a large corporation and and just throw in some character that didn't end up in a movie or a team from an animation studio gets together and whip up some character and share some quick cash.

So if you are an amateur which is the majority of iClone users, forget it!
You know some design team or studio will decimate your chances of winning diddly squat.

As long as this is the case, I being a solitary work at home amateur will not even try.

Okay, I started a Lobo submission already, but I will turn him into an original character that only references Lobo. This will give me more freedom to play around with some ideas I have. Thanks!

If you believe sw00000p, big studios laugh at iClone, so I think you're OK. I would be more concerned with talented iClone developers.

I have participated in iClone contests in the past (except for the Facebook ones) and have always found them to be fair. For example, we had the game character design contest last year. The participants were mostly individuals, and an a solitary contestant was the winner.

I think originality is the key here. If I look at many professional designs, they concern either ferocious monsters, heavy armored testosterone-laden dudes, or DD-cup-sized super gals. If you can think beyond that I think you have a fair chance.

Thing is, it is not just an iClone contest, it is open to all sorts of software associated sponsors. The contest suggest registering with some forum that has nothing to do with Reallusion. The boarder the reach is the more it is likely that the contest will be won by industry pros.

Hi Dragonskunk,

We do not limit this competition to specific 3D users, skill-levels, or specific 3rd party 3D tools.  Our goal is to introduce CC and iClone to more artists.  We feel that CC in particular can be a game changer and our sponsors feels the same way due to their enthusiasm in pitching in value prizes.  There are a number of contest categories including Best Use of Virtual Reality, Best Use of Character Creator, and Best Use of iClone.  We will have more award categories paired with great prizes, so everyone has a chance to win!

I understand The Best Use of iClone and the Best Use of Character Creator, but perhaps you may want to add the categories of Most Use  of  iClone and the Most Use of Character Creator. Scenario: An Artist  has 3DMax and creates an awesome  looking character using that software. Then in iClone he adds hair. Theoretically,  he can win the Best Use of iClone by just adding hair to the avatar made in 3DMax.  ;)

Interesting point! :D
In my point of view, the "Best Use" means that the entrant tests out a lot of functionalities and applies them on the entry perfectly.  ;)

Hi,
Quick question: I know that iClone & Character Creator are not required but I want to use them for this contest. I believe you want to see more artists using your tools in their workflow, and its a big Plus, isn't it? However,  I can't run iClone and Character Creator, I got this error message. It seems iClone is not supporting GTX 1080 yet. This is such a huge disadvantage and not fair for people using GTX 10 series like me. I can't rig and animate well so I really need iClone6 in order to speed up the production, you guys should fix this issue as soon as possible. Since GTX 1080 is new, more and more people are gonna use it.

@RayLe: I use iClone with a GTX1080, so it must be something else.

EDIT: One thought: if your system has on-board graphics, make sure that the GTX 1080 is enabled. Also make sure that the original NVidia drivers are used. Windows 10 sometimes loads Microsoft drivers, which is not would you want.

According to iClone requirements, they are not supporting GTX 10 series. I'm using Windows 7, and I don't have on-board graphics.

As I said, it works for me and I know it does for others. Websites don't always get updated right away. I would contact RL Support and make your case.

I, too, am blessed to be running iClone on a GTX 1080.  It's dreamy, and makes my editing so much more productive.  I've had no issues running iClone 6 on that card.

Be sure any old drivers are removed, and use the Nvidia tool (I forget what it's called... "Game Live" or "GeForce Experience" or whatever) to get the right drivers for the 1080.

P.S.
I'm on Windows 7, too.
By RayLe - 9 Years Ago
Is it iClone or Character Creator? I'm only having issue with Character Creator. I have tried a clean Nvidia install, I'm pretty I'm using the latest driver for GTX 1080.

UPDATE: Ok, I think I fixed it. This is really weird... So I changed the graphic mode from Directx 11  to Directx 9 and it works..

Hello. I want to start by thanking Reallusion for putting this contest together, looks like a fun way to try out your tools which I haven't had the opportunity to use yet. I hope this is an acceptable place to ask a few questions about the Reallusion tools and workflow.

From the research I've been doing on Character Creator and iClone, my overall workflow for this contest would seem to be something like:

1) Use Character Creator to create a rigged base mesh for my character.
2) Export the base mesh as an OBJ, sculpt and texture the character in Zbrush and Substance.
3) Bring the sculpted changes back to Character Creator by adding a custom morph slider using the sculpted OBJ out of ZBrush. Export the rigged, morphed character out of CC as an FBX.
4) Adjust the skinning of my CC-rigged character and any accessories/clothing made for it in Maya, save as FBX.
5) Use iClone for it's animation abilities, export as animated FBX.
6) Render my animated character in Maya.

I would like to avoid doing any rigging or animation from scratch, and I think iClone/CC will help with that but I am a little unsure of the overall iClone/CC workflow for something like this. Is there anything I need to keep in mind in order to preserve the rig that is created in Character Creator all the way to the end of the pipeline for my finished character? Does any part of this basic outline seem incorrect? Where does 3DXchange come into play?

I had an idea for sculpting a morph in ZBrush and using that as part of the animation of my contest character. Is it possible to create a custom morph in Character Creator and then bring this morph slider with your character into iClone as an animatable slider?

Thanks for the help!

Hi ChancePayne,

For step 4 you can just export from CC directly into iClone as an iAvatar file and proceed to step 5.
From step 5 you'll need 3DXchange to export the animated character as an FBX file as Character Creator does not support multi-frame animations.

For more information you can watch the tutorials on this page:

Hi guys, I would like to know which countries are admissible? I'm from Montréal, Québec in Canada and would love to participate.
By Mythcons - 9 Years Ago
I know I asked this question, but just to clarify, we are allowed to submit more than one character design? I know we're allowed to submit more than one video, but I'm not sure if that translates into separate character submissions.

I learned a lot through this contest that I'd like to incorporate into another design. If not, no worries.

Well something seems to have happened with my trial version of Character Creator, and now I can't access any of the body controls. Normally there's this panel on the left side of the interface that has a selection of default body, face, and clothing types, but instead there's this;
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/22525abf-49fe-4e85-bdc7-138d.jpg
I try and click on these folders, but it doesn't go anywhere. I also can't access any of the modification sliders. What the heck happened?

Hi AdventDestiny, it seems some data was deleted, the fast way to fix it is re-installing the software. All the files in the custom folders will be well-protected.
By Cartoon Components - 9 Years Ago

Hi Everyone!

I'm a little late to the contest, but my name is EJ Johnson Jr aka Cartoon Components and I'm very new to creating 3d characters... After many years of drawing vector characters I was going to start telling animated stories after I purchased  RL's  Crazy Talk Animator 2....  Then I Discovered Character Creator and I was Hooked.  I primarily use CC 1.5, Iclone6 pro, 3d Xchange, Daz3d, blender and Sculptris.

I've been creating characters for a few months now and was greatly inspired by such creators as Tobias of TokoMotion among others...

I hope someday to expand my characters and custom CC character morph packages for others to use, but in the meantime will learn and grow and keep watching all the great creations others are making.

The character I will be entering will be Super TINY Gurl, from drawing to CC.

https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/758dde28-ba04-41ba-874e-9a7c.jpg

I stared with creating a character in CC 1.5

https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/39a44dea-4695-4801-961d-921d.jpg

I then found a bodysuit in Daz3d...

https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/6d3a9b9f-5ab6-43c0-883a-eb7e.jpg

I then exported through 3dXchange and did additional morphing, editing, parenting and weight painting in Blender...

https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/efb37ee2-fe02-424a-82eb-d30f.jpg

I then imported the items into CC1.5 and animated with Iclone 6 Pro

Hi,
I made an Animation Model by CC Base Model with utilizing low poly 3D Character Shape in the CadNav.com. I' m afraid whether this approach meets the contest rule or not.

DDS Texture format was was converted, cloth and accessories were copied and detached for the CC Base body exported from Character Creator. CC Base Body with Calibration Motion was used to attach and skin the cloth and accessories in the Max.

The basic process is reported in my report. http://hirospot.web.fc2.com/FantasyGirlFairy_CCModel/index.htm

Please also visit my trial Video.: https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=JhtNmwda_20

Thank you,
