my documents folder is getting pretty ridiculous in size, at this rate upgrading to ssd is not an option, so i'm going to have to get a new drive and move my libraries / documents there so I can have breathing space to install other software.
has anyone tried this with iclone / and other software like steam ?

So everything in your computer in drive C? You don't have any other partitions or drives?
Back up your files before repartitioning your current drive just incase it fails you still have all your files :D

actually no, i have a few drives in my computer ...but about to upgrade to about 6 tbs to consolidate the older smaller drives, I noticed my documents files hit over 340 gigs - a big chunk of that is from iclone - between imported props and projects. I know I can move most of the other stuff manually ...like daz, modo, and poser, being that i can re- search for content, but iclone's fixation on using documents for assets is outdated and making me wonder how to restructure everything.

and yes, i eloquently used the word "outdated" because I know the RL developers like to be cutting edge. Nothing cutting edge about relentlessly eating up drive space on an ssd with assets :P :P :P
before iclone, i was all email and games on the pc - so it was never a big deal but now that I'm doing cg on my pc, and mixing in some audio - i've never had a situation like this before where i go through through drive space like water lol...- in mac with music, i always use custom file structures and can switch and archive most huge files around fast and ez.without potentially breaking everything - windows over all has more restrictions on moving stuff around that fluidly.- especially with software like iclone that locks in to windows default settings.

During installation iClone gives you the option of where to store your content, both default and custom. I have never stored content on my C drive for a bucket full of reasons, and at the moment have a single drive dedicated for only iClone content, both vers. 5 and 6 in separate folders.
The only way to do what you want, without a complete reinstall of iClone, is to move all the content and then edit the registry entries to show the new paths.
The "best" way to do this is detailed in this thread - good luck.

ahh thank you wires, I usually go default everything and just keep hitting enter till it's done....i only noticed recently how large my files got so now it suddenly matters lol!
This is going to help a ton, I still don't take back calling it an out-dated system, because it should be easy enough to change in preferences! :P :P :P

This has been discussed numerous times. I guess one of us should officially log it in Feedback Tracker.
In addition to the "during installation" options, we should be able to change our storage locations in a Preferences setting, and simply move all our stuff from one drive (or folder) to another.
We should not need to edit the registry. (But for now, we do.)

I added all SSD drives.
Now my com is so fast and hardly ever a crash. Well worth the small investment. Just never do a defrag on an SSD. Not necessary and it will mess up your drive using Win 10. Ebay offers great prices on SSD drives. Of course Ram is needed...32GB to work well.
OR
Also, you can uninstall IC and reinstall it without losing anything else. That is the easiest way....but then all NEW materials will be added to your choice of drives for your NEW materials....then just move/copy your current items to that drive according to the proper dir.

I've moved all my RL files (and many others) to a shared drive on my server. That way I can easily access the files from any computer on my network.
For RL programs the paths are defined in the registry and it is just a matter of finding and changing them for each RL application.
If you are not comfortable editing the registry then the best way is to reinstall each app selecting the new location for your files.
No need to reinstall all your other files in the new location, just copy the old directory to the new location.
I have also successfully moved Steam from a C drive to a D drive for my brother.

ever consider just moving all the seldom used stuff to a external hd or different location and just making links
to them in the default or custom folders?
it works for many programs, iclone is one of them....................................

(I would have done it myself, but I can't logon to Feedback Tracker at the office. The "Login" button (and some others) don't work right. Our wonderful security software is blocking something. For the record, I'm taking my lunch break now.)
As for editing the registry and using links and stuff like that... It's great to have workarounds, but they shouldn't be necessary, especially since it's been a topic of conversation for several releases. It's not a huge deal, but it's silly that it still exists, and it should be relatively easy to address. Thanks again for entering the issue, Gerry.

Can I just add a disclaimer for anyone considering diving into the registry to try and change drive or folder locations of their content. If you attempt this you are doing so at your own risk. Unless you are experienced with registry editing there is a lot that can go wrong and you may end up in a right mess with some or all content failing to show up. My own advise would be to uninstall and perform a clean install choosing the new drive and folder locations. It only takes a few minutes and will avoid any unnecessary risk.

When I installed Iclone, I did not have an option to change the content only the program. Is there a way to add content library from the D: drive?

Hi, Character Creator 4 and iClone 8 (including Cartoon Animator 5) share the same content.
Once you install the first program, the second program will not allow you to choose the content folder.
You may need to reinstall the programs if you want to move the content to another drive.
However, another option is to utilize the Smart Content Manager's multiple drive feature.
