Update on Indigo Export plugin bug.

Hi all,

just wanted to give you an update on this. In earlier threads I was describing, that if you export animated scenes +100 frames through the plugin to Indigo you will get a runtime error from Iclone. Reason is bad memory management and the computer runs out of memory (RAM not Full Harddrives). Roughly 3 months ago I had a case open and Reallusion did confirm the bug and that the fix for the plugin most likely would be released in 6.5. Now with the announcements of beta-testing for 6.5 i was opening another case with RL to ask for the status. I got a very fuzzy answer back, that it would not be in 6.5 as Reallusion needs to do more investigation whether the bug would within Iclone or Indigo. This answer is totally strange for one reason : WHILE THE BUG HAPPENS => only Iclone is running - packing its files for Indigo. So Indigo is even not running.

This leaves me with 3 findings :

a) Since the release of Iclone6 and the extra-sales for Indigo RT and the plugin there is a bug, that does not allow real animation output to Indigo. I spent several 1000 Dollars for buying a little render farm and Indigo Licenses, that I can still not use, as the export in Iclone keeps crashing and Reallusion is not making the effort to fix it.

b) It is just not a good customer support, when you get answers like that saying, I should use feedback tracker if I still have an issues : RL, your software has a major bug, you know it. How often shall I give further feedback to a broken software, that is knowingly crashing?

c) It is hard to believe that RL invests in VR and other fancy stuff, instead of fixing, what you sold to me nearly 2 years ago, and it is still not working.

It leaves me also with the question :

a) most likely 6.5 won't get PBR - which high class render shall I use now ? Alembic ist not an option
b) shall I buy the upgrade for Indigo4 (which is for 6 rendering licenses 300 USD) or is this a dead end road, will the bug ever get fixed?
c) shall I migrate my 3d projects to the other upcoming real time tools like film engine, unreal, DAZ? Knowing that customer support may be
same kind of unpleasant ? And not everything that shines is not Gold either?

Sorry I have to vent, but this is frustrating. I think IClone is a great tool. CC is fantastic.... still this needs to be talked about

Hi all .
we are using Iclone 5.5 and Iclone 6.4 .Now we are using indigo RT for better render quality .But we are facing problem in rendering timing . Indigo RT taking too much timing in rendering . So i want to know that how can i save my rendering time in RT . For example i started a shot of 100 frame with one character and interior BG and file size is 256 MB in iclone 5.5. And it will take 1 hour & 6 minutes to complete . So please let us know that is it correct time for render according to the file and its size . Waiting for your suggestion .
Hope to hear from you soon .
Many thanks in advance .

Are you talking about Rendertime in Indigo or Iclone. In both cases the answer is : better HW.

For Indigo I can say :

Version 3 :
I bought the full licenses and have 6 Machines with network rendering behind it. Version 3 of Indigo renders on CPU basis only, So every machine has 12 physical Intel - Cores, so instead of 4 Standard Cores (e.g. Intel I7) I have nearly 70 Cores processing. This ramps up speed for rendering massively. 2 Problems : a) you need to invest into more HW, b) energy cost is not to underestimate. If you have 6 Computers like that running fully speed, you need 3000W per/h which is roughly 80Cents USD per hour of rendering, That makes already 16US per day.

Version4 (beta):
Indigo is in beta. The improvement to render with GPU is massive. Disadvanteges : You need to buy an upgrade from version 3 to 4 which is 50 USD per License. Second GPU accelerated rendering to Indigo is only allowing Path-Tracing which makes the Characters Eyes and behavior of lights different between how it looks in Indigo and Iclone.

And as mentioned heavier scenes with longer frames lead to an export error in Iclone. I have a new machine with 32GB RAM, which allows longer exports vs. an 8GB RAM computer. But it is always a risk. IClone normarlly crashes on the last meters. Then you have a full HD with Data you  need to through away, as the "lead-in" file from Iclone to Indigo is corrupt too, and you need to start all over.
By davide445 - 10 Years Ago
This is just bad for all here.
This is the single thing is preventing me in investing in iClone.
Btw Indigo 3 does have hybrid CPU+GPU render mode that on average speed up things +30% vs CPU only.
Indigo 4 pure GPU mode is speeding up x10 and more depending on the GPU and number of them (can scale to any number) .
With RX 480 coming at $199 this is the most cost effective way to speed up rendering.

Indigo issues have been well documented. Read some of my threads and posts about it. The export plugin within Iclone is just not good.
Too bad the beta testers didn't catch it then before releasing the plugin.
I've given up on it. And I wouldn't invest in Indigo 4. It won't make a difference with the export process from within Iclone.
Hopefully they deliver on pbr in Iclone within this year.

Related to this thread, I finally got around to entering my "Export to Indigo" issue in Feedback Tracker.
It's all about making the export much more efficient.
http://www.reallusion.com/FeedBackTracker/Issue/Make-Indigo-multi-frame-export-more-efficient-by-using-a-single-copy-of-things-that-don-t-change
Does not address rendering times, though.

I'm not an expert, but I now the "shader" (renderer?) selection in Indigo for specific materials can significantly impact the amount of time required for a clean image.
Check out one of the Indigo sample projects in iClone, the one with many copies of the same shape.
In short, you don't want to use a renderer geared toward transparent or highly reflective surfaces if you're trying to render a cotton shirt or a lump of dirt.
Sorry I can't be more specific than that.
By sbaerman - 10 Years Ago
thanks for your comments. I pretty much feel awkward to complain about something that obvious and most likely easy to handle item.

@ justaviking Obviously I voted for your feedback tracker

with PBR coming, still I think it is not acceptable, that RL sells the Iclone Export Plugin to Indigo, knowing the bug is there. Like selling a car, where you now, the airbag doesn't work.

I will be stopping this topic now, it does not lead anywhere. Will check in, if anything changes with 6.5 otherwise I am back in a year to see what has changed. Until then, I spend my pocket-dollars somewhere else :-)

By davide445 - 10 Years Ago
@justaviking
Just voted for your issue. I think of the three issues the speed it's just not to be tracked, simply it's a feature of such kind of renderer.
PBR version of iClone will provide a better biased renderer, with speed impossible to achieve from any unbiased one, but also with compromises in the results.
@sbaerman
Me too think is really stupid from RL to sell this plugin in this form, useful mostly for stills. Also thanks for sharing your experience, we can only wait and ping.

Beta tester comments do get ignored sometimes...:Whistling: Marketing forces at work, I guess...

To be fair though, there is definitely work to be done on the Indigo side to make it suitable for animation. In another thread, PSD has linked to a discussion about this from about a year ago on the Indigo forum. Shortcomings were admitted, but nothing has come of it thus far. In my own test of Indigo 4 beta, I found that a scene that rendered fine in Indigo 3 crashed Indigo 4. I don't think that an update of the iClone plugin is a solution unless Indigo starts to take animation and data caching seriously. I suppose they sell enough to those interested in making pretty pictures.

By justaviking - 10 Years Ago
All good points, of course.

About the beta testing... even *if* the beta tester missed that flaw, it's been well reported and known about before 6.1... 6.2... 6.3... 6.4...

We've known for a long time that **Indigo** isn't very suitable to *animation* but it would still be nice to clean up Reallusion's part, though I will concede that Indigo's flaws do pretty much overwhelm any improvements Reallusion could make.  Still, if iClone were ever to expand on their external plug-ins, adding Octane, Iray, or others, we would want them to export efficiently too, so working out the logic to export better might not be totally wasted.  (I'm more impatient for PBR, but that's another story.)
By planetstardragon - 10 Years Ago
so,  I just found out that it looks like indigo isn't going to honor it's free upgrade to 4 they offered when iclone first linked up with them.
Now they are saying only if you bought 3.8

The issue is not indigo. The issue is the exporter plugin which RL created.
Indigo 3 or 4, octane renderer, etc won't make a difference if the export process stays the way it is.

There is some form of Alembic support in Blender, but you have to compile a DIFF into your Blender installation (I hope I said that right).  I haven't gone that far, yet.

The Indigo forum is currently down, so I cannot refer to the thread I mentioned. I'm not saying the iClone plugin doesn't need fixing. I'm just saying that Indigo has it's own issues that need fixing or it's just a waste of time. As far as I know, no animation has been rendered in Indigo of any complexity exporting from any 3D program.

@animagic From this post
"About Indigo being a suitable animation renderer or not - it's true that there have not been to many professional animations done so far as it has rather been considered a very high quality stills renderer and found its niche there. There are of course exceptions to that, examples:
With the new, faster rendering the devs are however eager to get into the animation business properly and lots of further improvements in that department can be expected."

Honestly the best solution would be an acceptable internal render in Iclone. Using Indigo is a workaround that does not work either. Actually I would love ICLone to be the one stop shop for my animation movies. As the "realtime" render engine hasn't been touched somehow since version 4 it unfortunately still looks like the SIMS from 2005.

Also working with Alembic would be a workaround, yes to the outside world. But I guess it is better to start internally first.

So, Mr. Reallusion give us : PBR !

Thanks

unfortunately you won't get a seriously good resolution in real time,  the whole computer tech isn't really 'there' yet,  and I'm not counting games engines,  they aren't as high resolution as say renderman,  octane, v-ray, arnold, maxwell, guerilla etc...    -  keyshot is the fastest I've seen,  but it salt and peppers every frame to get a super fast high res render....the problem isn't iclone,  the problem is having a render engine calculate photorealistic light and high quality shadows in real time. - don't get me wrong,  game engines are amazing, but they are nowhere near in quality to dedicated pro render engines.

the render engine iclone has now with maybe a few tweaks that wont kill real time - is good as a monitor for production sake,  where you get a good quality view of whats happening in your scene ....but a really high quality render will have to be a separate batch process,  else you will kill the production value of the speed iclone has now -  it's either that or scale down a high grade engine to keep up with iclone,  and that defeats the purpose of superior quality.  -  i really don't want to see iclone stuttering, or moving like in stop motion, when i'm trying to create a scene,  leave that for offline.   -  i like the direction they are going now with pipelining,  then i can have another computer render while i work on a new scene in my main computer.

Even the "Big Guys" need a lot of patience when doing BG renders for film. A few quotes from this article on the film Gravity.

To render Gravity on just one machine you would need to start before the dawn of Egyptian civilisation.

“The amount of planning and additional work that came about because of the long shots was enormous, it shouldn’t be underestimated.” says Chris Lawrence. After hitting a button the team would often have to wait more than two days to see if a particular simulation had worked.

The web is full of reports listing the size of render farms used in various films, and the time taken to render out scenes. The equipment, and the artists, are available for those who require them - and they cost a little more than the $199.00 asking price for iClone.

While it is true that the render engine needs to be improved in the future, it's also true to say that for the price iClone is an excellent introduction for those wishing to get started with animation - and view the results quickly.

@planetstardragon
You can't really compare a render not considering the whole pipeline.
Materials, lights etc are a huge part of the final result, just as example the Grace Kelly in the Arnold example was made for the Dior J'Adore campaign in 2011, with a budget of, to say, many millions? You can't really compare the results coming from standard materials and light sold with iClone.
Just as better example here a character rendered with Indigo and a more professional pipeline
https://forum.reallusion.com/uploads/images/e6e49108-de1b-4e78-83c2-5ccb.jpg

I absolutely agree the difference btw realtime and not. Still iClone can improve as the results coming from Unity, Unreal and CryEngine show.
As @wires say iClone it's still a wonderful tool for animation start, and also a storytelling tool as many others demonstrate, that's why I'm interested on. Maintaining this focus is IMHO the main value in future updates.
Still there is a market opportunity to catch, and competition to answer, if there will be just some update in the render quality, and PBR appear to be the right direction.
Having good external render for high quality stills and animations can only extend his user base, but need to work and current plugin implementation really didn't allow to use the features iClone is made for: animation.

Agreed - except for pipelining. I would wish iClone to be my main and only 3D tool. Indeed iClone final rendering is best done "offline" in batch via specialised plugins.
By sbaerman - 10 Years Ago
I think the here posted examples, are amazing. We all know, that as one Person with IClone you can not achieve the same results for a self-made movie. For that Iclone is an amazing tool. BUT let us not forget that the internal Iclone renderer is "old-technology". Which means if you would put into the series of animated movies before a purely rendered IClone scene it would stick out. Negatively. And that is what I mean. We do not need Pixar or Disney like results. But if every modern computer game (that not only renders realtime, but also keeps the game running) can achieve better results than Iclone today. It is a fair ask that Iclone renderer needs to be improved. That is a no-brainer. And we live too long with that kind of renderer now. Obviously good exporting tools to Octane, Renderman or others would be nice. But actually it is not needed.

When I show my Iclone scenes to friends, the first question I get, about the bad quality of the rendering. As filmmaker I know, that an audience accepts an offset, the quality of the image has not to be stellar to make a good movie BUT it should not through the audience out of the story, when a character or renderer looks weird....

With the current renderer this is the case!

This is a minimum requirement, no need for VR, no need for Softcloth, no need for bla bla

Just a simple good renderer.

So simple. And obviously so difficult, otherwise we would have it already, I guess.

Hope is based on logic. Indigo RT for iClone and Kinect Mocap Plugin for iClone are "hope-ware". You hope its gonna match the hype or get better... It never does.

I'm starting to wonder whether Clone is hope-ware.
By sbaerman - 10 Years Ago
Indigo is try and error. I fully agree. As said by many others before, we just need something that is fully integrated into the workflow of Iclone. Maybe some of you remember : WYSIWYG  = what you see, is what you get <==> Iclone and Indigo is not like that.

By the way : the "confidential Iclone video with PBR" has a version tag on the upper left side with 19th January. So they are working on something already since nearly half a year now ....
By planetstardragon - 10 Years Ago
in iclone 3,  the pipeline was no where near as flexible as it was today,  it wasn't fun....further,  you never really want to get locked into one software - because there's always something new and more efficient / specialized / unique / or cool as an alternate option.....

so while it would be nice to have iclone as a 1 stop animation software,  that's just not a next level approach -  even maya guys have modo, houdinii, lightwave and zebrush because each one adds something uniquely theirs.   This is not to say i don't want the tools we have now to be of a better quality -   but i certainly don't want RL to try and be everything to everyone ,  that's just asking for bloatware.       As is,  we had growing pains from 5 to 6 with the gpu focused render - which i wished they'd give us an option to do cpu render as my cpu is more powerful and overclocked than my current gpu -  even a hybrid option would be nice.

I guess,  i've seen how much slower iclone has gotten in performance since iclone 3,  now while I enjoy the increase in quality,  it's not fun working in a scene that lags and forces you to go to a mesh view -  that kills the very heart of whats cool with iclones wyswyg advantage.
By pmaina - 10 Years Ago
RL is well on the path to bloatware and they ARE tryng to make a swissarmy tool that is everything to everyone but never quite gets the job done.

If they had concerns about bloatware, VR would have been in a separate app altogether.

That VR is bad news and is gonna raise their maintenance costs tenfold as well as affect the "user experience" for regular users. Terrible.

@dave,  Iclone can hold it's own with indigo though    - and to be honest,  i'm not crazy about how the glare was handled in the arnold render for that particular picture - so i suppose there is an individual artist factor. - the real point of posting the pictures is to compare them to game engines - which is the most we will get from real time - which isn't bad really.... but we'd need to go to a linear workflow for that

and i must give credit to grabiller for helping me understand this,  also @hattori for helping me understand why it's easier said than done
so while you can desaturate and brighten up your scene for a more photorealistic'ish look in iclone,  the glare is out of control by the time you get your render from gamma space to linear.

But it's a really long and big investment in developing such capable engines, appear to me RL is going step by step trough first adding physically based materials and external high quality render, next PBR and maybe next some proper GI system. A good strategy IMHO.
Returning to the topic object if only will make usable what already sold will resolve a problem, make happy who had invested into this pipeline and also reboot a relationship with a partner.
Not speaking for Glare Tech, but I will be very angry on their side in reading some comments, where an highly specialized tool full of advanced technical achievement (worth the effort having a look at the scientific posts in the forum) is blamed for problems deriving from RL bad communication and inability to manage a "simple" exporter, where all plugins was made for other high end packages such as C4D from single developers into Indigo forum.

I know you have an issue with this feature, but this is an exaggeration IMHO. "VR" is just a fancy name for what is actually a simple 360-degree render setting (also. known as a skybox) that is useful beyond "VR". Think of creating 360 degree backgrounds for example. It would not make sense at all to make that a separate app without duplicating most of the rendering engine.

Wait and see. Am not exaggerating. Why spend resources on 360 degree render when 180 degree render (indigo et al) is incomplete?

VR 360 is just a camera type not much different from implementing a stereo cam. This should be built into Iclone and not a separate module.
Adding a modeller to Iclone would be bloatware :D

I'm not competing, just sharing information.  We're all on the same team here, hoping for improvements.

My post does not talk about crashes, but our posts are very closely related and share some similarities.  I trust Reallusion will make the connection and see this as 8+4=12 votes for the same issue.

Hey Justaviking,

I see your request going a bit further. Thats why I posted it in feedback tracker separately. Because I don't want RL to be able to say : The users ask for better functionality (which is your case) while I asked for : fix the bug in the software, it crashes. Obviously it would be more than smart to implement your suggestion right away. But as RL is trying to avoid the topic since day one, I hope that they at least fix the issue! Especially when PBR is still a myth and we can play around with VR glasses now....

@sbaerman,

When I said "I trust Reallusion will make the connection and see this as 8+4=12 votes for the same issue," perhaps I should have used the word "goal" rather than "issue."  We share the same goal of making the Indigo interface better and more usable.

Thanks again for posting your related-but-separate Issue Tracker entry.  :)

Well, there's a point: I wonder what percentage of iClone users visit the forum and then make an effort to use the Feedback Tracker.

Seeing as there is no effort to fix the indigo issue I think its logical to think that sales have not been good enough to warrant fixing the issue.

Maybe RL has a different understanding of how to do business. But If I sell something that is broken, my customer forces me to repair it, and I am happy to do so, even if it is painful. Because if I do not support my customer, he will walk away to the next vendor...
