I've downloaded some of the CMU files, and they look about as good as one would expect, given the varying quality in the source files: not always perfect, but sometimes usable. There's no problem with that. "Sometimes usable" is still sometimes usable!
I looked at some other files marked "sample," and the results are very intriguing. I hit the limit on unregistered downloads and now I'm eager to become a member and get a larger sense of what's available.
iClone users should be grateful for the contributions of both TheTrailerSpark and NewEventsOnline. You can't animate without motions!

The CMU files are all over the map, both in terms of quality, but also in terms of suitability for storytelling. There is a lot of nonsense, such as silly walks and shootup-gamer stuff, that I will never be able to use for quality animation.
But then there are motions that provide the raw material for real acting. Take for example, 714-12, translated to VNS at TheTrailersPark. It's called "the thinker."
In the course of an afternoon, I was able to build upon it to create this:

Thanks, jenlonge!
