Hello Everyone,
Well we finally got our act together and we have a project and a brand new website!
The website was built by me using WebPlus 8 software by Serif. It's not perfect, but I didn't want to delay the launch any more.
I hope you like the premise of this project....I don't want to give anything away so......tada.....
www.pinheadadventure.com is now open for business.

Yay! A new Pinhead Project. :)
I'm so glad you didn't stay dead!!! (Reference to a recent Pinhead Halloween video.)
I like the concept. It's different, but in a good way. Pinhead projects have always been about; a) Pinhead, and b) the story. Not about specific software.
I like that this brave concept will appeal to those few die-hard 2D animators still out there. And as you pointed out, it's great for Indigo users too. I know a few people here have used iClone to create graphic novels, so maybe we'll attract some new participants. It is also very newbie-friendly since you don't have to fight typical animation challenges. But there will be plenty of challenges in coming up with a good script, lighting, music, and everything that's not animating motions.
Thank you for launching another project.
Now to start thinking. Think, think, think.... hmmm... Nope, need to think some more. Hmm... think, think, think...

Great news for Pinhead fans past, present & new, with fabulous prizes.
Since the Project is Pose & not Animation-based, new iClone Users can quickly & easily create any Pose from Animation Templates, by Dragging the Timescale Scrubber to the required Pose, Right-Clicking on Character/Remove all Animation. Done. You have your Pose.
If you have iClone's 3DXChange, you have unlimited Props you can use.
As usual, everyone piles in with help re; technical issues &how tos. I nominate Comic Strip specialist Shaky, as Project Technical Adviser.;)
There's a Moviestorm Pinhead Character on the Moviestorm Forum.
I've signed-up to the Project & signed Pinhead's new Guestbook.
BTW - I lay claim to "Pinhead's 10th Birthday Party" Title. Before anyone-else thinks of it.;)

Thank goodness! I am in the middle of an animated movie currently, so this project will provide the necessary "comic relief"! :P
I've always wanted to try and create a graphic novel story, so this is a good excuse... :w00t:
It's also an area in which I'm a total newbie, so I will have lot's of questions. For example, how does one create speech bubbles?

Sorry, I haven't had my coffee yet, but when I sign up, where do I enter my location?

In Photoshop, there are some basic speech bubbles included. But I was thinking that maybe we could provide a variety of speech bubbles for both thought and speech as a download. I'll ask Joe, as he is a whiz at stuff like this.
I just changed the Heading "Comments" to "Where are you from".

Dearest friends of Walter P- Those who know me well, know I love Pinhead... his quirks & shortcomings are so endearing & at times he is just so clueless, you just got to love the guy!!! Unfortunately, I am unable to participate in this, which breaks my heart, due to medical circumstances... please forgive my absence from the competitors, but I really cannot join the competition when I can't even rely on being functional from one day to the next.
That being said, if anyone requires any assistance - a special character, prop, motion, whatever - I hereby offer my assistance to anyone & everyone involved..... I am not the best developer out there, but I am sure I can assist in creating whatever you may require for your entry. Please feel free to email me at grannyj@grannyjs3dattic.com or contact me via Skype ( user ID is grannyjsplace) & I will help in whatever capacity is needed.
To the committee - Thanks for your tireless & continued efforts to keep Pinhead alive & well in the community! If I can assist you in any way, just let me know. I can't wait to see what y'all come up with. HUGS, Granny J

@colour - yes, I signed up, & I will make an attempt.... as I posted previously, medical issues often impair my ability to function, so I cannot promise a final result, but I will try.
I just can't wait to see what everyone does..... My title is "For the love of Gretchen.... Walter P strikes again!"
As mentioned in a prior post, if any contestant needs anything (props, motions, additional characters, clothing etc,) I am ready & willing to assist!
Hugs, Granny J

Great idea for this contest as it gives me a chance of completing on time, allows me to concentrate on the story and (in a way) is good practice at storyboarding an idea. Already got stuck in with a working title of "Pinhead's Perilous Inheritance"

@Alley - Should contest entries be posted here in the forum or will there be a submission mechanism on the new website?
A quick tip about particles in iC6: For iC6 users who want to add particles for effects in their project - there is an issue with iC6 & particles (they don't appear in your scene manager, so it is next to impossible to manipulate them) - however, there is an easy work-around. In iC5, attach the particle you want to use to any prop (you can even use a dummy block) save the prop with the attached particle, and then bring that prop into your iC6 scene. Now the particle is there in your iC6 scene manager as a sub-prop & you are able to manipulate as desired.... (BTW, RL is aware of this bug & is trying to repair in next version release).

I have a bunch of speech bubble pngs that Joe packaged up and I'll post them for download later....gotta go out. But for those that want to do the speech bubbles via video overlays or do some work on them in photo program, these will be ideal. I'll post back when they are ready to download. Granny - re you question....post the videos in this thread and then I'll add them to the website. Perhaps there is a way to create a form to auto-link them but I don't know how to do it and I am using web software so I don't do html.

Hello Gang- Here is my first draft, which may end up being my final entry. I wanted to get something submitted now because shortly I may be unable to. I know it is rather rough around the edges..... but less than 24 hours from concept till final post doesn't leave a lot of room to be picky! Anyway, I had fun doing it, which means more than anything at the moment. So I hope you enjoy my little piece...... Oh, BTW, unless you have super exceptional vision - I highly recommend viewing it on You Tube (click the little You Tube Button on the player for newbies) as the reduction of video size in the forum makes reading text bubbles difficult....

A lovely well-constructed, touching story, Granny :). As usual Pinhead, saves the day (night ;) ), with a surprise ending. Really nice, detailed Sets. The body & facial poses & talk bubbles script, worked very well together. I & I guess others, are pleased to have your early submission, to see how the Comic is done.
Best wishes for a smooth as possible journey ahead, health-wise. The Pinhead Family are right behind you. You have our support.

Arie- Gretchen climbing a light pole & Pinhead on a reindeer ! I am still smiling! how cute is that! It's like an early Christmas card... thanks for that bit of comic relief
Colour - thanks for the lovely comments on my short vid & for the well-wishes. For the sets I utilized the following GJ3D Insta-Scenes: Ladies Parlor, Vintage Bathroom & French Country Bedroom. For the video, I built the following props in 3ds max: Gretchen's "tears", the birdie behind the parlor window going into the birdbath; Gretchen's hair rollers; the sparkling star (for her sparkling teeth in the bathroom scene), the floating hearts in the final scene. I used the talk-bubble iprops & placed them in my iClone scene so I could manipulate them & set the character poses simultaneously. Because of the particles I used for steam & for running water in the bathroom sink, I built the set and attached the particles to the associated props in iC5 & then brought the complete scene into iC6, added the characters & talk bubbles, adjusted lighting, camera, HDR, AO, IBL & then rendered from iC6. Post-production (in AE) added overlay texts, added scene transitions, added animated script (for credits) added background music.
If anyone needs a specialized prop, motion, particle, accessory, clothing item - whatever - for their Pinhead video, I will happily assist.... just ask!

Great news Alley et al. :D
I'll start digging around in the grey matter and see if I can come up with a story. Hopefully it'll come quickly. I'm going to wait on signing up for a bit until I play with some story ideas. I would hate to sign up and have to pull out from a lack of creativity. :pinch:

Alley (11/16/2015) Hi Viking....ok, no narration - sorry.
No problem.
I considered having a story book, and reading it to a child, with illustrations to support the story. Maybe I'll have to do that for a "fun clip" sometime.

It's been quiet on this tread, so I thought I would report on my progress. I've just sketched out my story idea, so that I can now start thinking about the visuals. I may try using Indigo, although I will have to adapt my scenery to be able to use it. I'm reusing characters and locations from my Halloween project, which will save time. In fact, the new story is sort of a follow-up or alternate thread, but it will be quite different in its outcome. I have to give Dennis credit for the idea of the original story.
I've just finished a first pass of all scenes of another Pinhead story I'm working on with lots of animation, so this project will be a nice antidote.
|
By animagic - 10 Years Ago
|
To follow up, I decided that I would try and use the toon shader to work with and discover something different. Here is a still that will form the first panel:

The story parallels the Halloween movie until Pinhead finds the Committee, after which take a different turn. I'm going to use a widescreen format, so that will be different from a regular comic.
|
By animagic - 10 Years Ago
|
One more before I go to bed:

Because the toon shader gives you only one (directional) light, you have to "fake" things by using self-illumination for example.

Toon Shader looks pretty good, Job. I hadn't considered that a possibility. I've changed my original idea to Pinhead's version of the Wacky Races. Starring Alley as Penelope Pitstop. At the moment I have Boo in back of Alleys Model T & Dobbin in back of Joe's 1940s pick-up. .Maybe they shouild join-in, in their own right. I've still to finish my Pinhead Xmas Clip & won't be able to concentrate on Project 9 full time until Jan. I think we're going to need extra time if we want the max number of entries. Contacting potential Participants takes a lot of time. Looks like 2 MovieStormers are in process. They have have a MovieStorm Pinhead Character. Video Friends Forum is being re-designed & won't be up again until Jan. 4 potentials plus Roger, from there. Maybe Robert can do some advertising on the German Forum? Hopefully he & Werner (Postfrosh) will join. I'm in contact with Daniel (3D Story).

As an impatient imperfectionist I am hoping to be finished "Pinhead's Inheritance" within the next few weeks- just need to ensure I can cram the improbable plot into the allotted time scale. Enjoying creating characters in CC for this.

Alley is Pinheads Website "Host" . Although She lives in Canada, there's been a very long Holiday break, with Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year. I expect she'll be back on track soon.
I haven't had time to gather the Pinhead troops to produce a Clip for this Project, as I've done for previous Projecfs. IMO, realistically, we need a 2 Month extension if we're going to meet even 10 Submissions.
I can't get into my Project full-time for at least another week. Then we can get the traditional Pinhead Project chat going in this Thread, which has been a bit thin on the ground. . .

For once, I have an early contribution! My comic is called "Playing Dead".
It's a follow-up of the Halloween movie I entered based on a story idea by Dennis (justaviking).
This is the first time ever that I did a comic, and it was a lot of fun. I hope it will inspire others to come forward. Don't be shy. For one, you won't have a sliding-feet problem! You do need a good story, obviously.
I've found the iClone toon renderer combined with the HDR toon map setting quite suitable for this. The single light is a challenge of course, but you can use self-illumination, specularity, and glow maps to work around that. What you see is the rendered output from iClone 6. I composed the actual comic book in Comic Life 3, as mentioned before. It has speech bubbles, a collection of various comic fonts, and the special font used for sounds in comics. The text and the speech bubbles were then extracted and imported separately into Vegas.
I decided to treat this as a true comic book, so each panel is a still, although I used fades for the speech bubbles and the text. Vegas has a page turning-transition that works nicely. You can control the speed with which the page are turned to fit the story. As Alley already mentioned, music and sound are important, and they contribute to the "movement" in the story.
EDIT: Here is the direct link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyq4MCSfLKc.

@Job (Animagic),
That was GREAT!!! I loved it. Excellent music and sound (ambient and effects). You did a great job of laying out the text in comic book style.
What did you use for the dialogue/thought bubbles? (EDIT: Oh, I paused when the credits started... "Comic Life 3" for the text?) (EDIT again: I just read the video description in YouTube. Yup, Comic Life 3. Someday I'll learn not to post before finishing my first cup of coffee in the morning, LOL. I'm glad I didn't read that before, though, it has spoilers in it.)
---
I liked the way you were able to repurpose the original project and extend it. I've been thinking about doing the exact opposite. There is an idea I've had for quite a while, and I might do it for this project, and then turn it into the animated version later.
I had such huge assumptions of getting a lot done on my project over the holiday break. I can't believe how busy I was, and how little of anything I accomplished. I'll have to finalize my plan and get it done so I'm not late.

Bedankt Arie; thank you, Dennis!
Dennis, you could also have found out what I used by reading the part of my post after the inserted video...:Whistling:
But yes, I invested $30 in Comic Life 3 and I've found it money well spent. It gave my all necessary textual elements for the comic panels.
BTW, I thought a comic would be easier and that we would have many more entries by now. What made it simpler for me is that by now I have many scene elements that I can reuse.

Hello fellow pinheads!
OK got my entry ready at last - best (as with all the entries) to view full screen and at HD resolution otherwise it is hard to read the captions. Apologies to anyone who reads slowly as you may not be able to keep up at all times. I am a slave to the music unfortunately. Thanks to everyone (especially Alley) for making this competition possible and for making the timescales achievable. I am very slow so need all the help I can get in that area. Some bits are darker than I expected following conversion into the video but hopefully you can still follow what's going on. Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2TC9Ax-PH8

Hello everyone....just a quick update. I have had my kids around for the last few weeks. I also got a new laptop for birthday/Christmas and I've been very distracted and taken lots of family time. So, I apologize for being behind here. I will get the website updated today with people who have joined up and entries. I'll post back when I think I have it up to date and if anyone notices I am missing anything, please let me know.
I'll get on this right away.

@Toonarama,
Wow, that was awesome! :w00t:
Loved the lighting, camera angles, music, and the rapid heart-pounding pace. The story was excellent too. Very "Pinhead." Really great.
|
By animagic - 9 Years Ago
|
@Toonerama: that was a great entry! Dark too, so it's good we have Arie!
The pace and the music really helped to move the story along. I had to pause a couple of times to read the text, although the imagery often said enough already.
Well, this promises again to become a great contest!

Wow, I just heard about this contest after making an other contest entry at a Film Production Software company named Celtx - so I'd probably have to rework my Pinhead a bit - there's some motion but no lip syncing. There are still images involved, but no bubbles (although I thought about that, again not being aware of the activities here). So hope you will take a look at it and offer any advice. It wouldn't be that hard to revise.
Just joking, but it occurs to me that all video is just one still frame after another by definition - it's not motion, but our brains perceive it as such. Anyway, I love the character Pinhead too and hope you will enjoy what I tried to do with him. The project was done primarily with iClone and imported some models from DAZ. Edits were done in post production video software to align the sound tracks etc including some Green Screens.
Thank you for a wonderful model, and any comments.

Hi Gang - I am back home & just got to view the entries made while I was gone! Great clips Job, Arie & toonerama... I was scared for a bit with the committee dying, then Pinhead dying - glad to see it was all one big nightmare..... Wasn't that nice of Pinhead to watch those 2 little "darlings" (probably why Pinhead remains childless!!).... & Rich, secretive uncles with cryptic messages...... what a wide variety of themes & plots! Great entertainment all the way around! Can't wait to see more! Hugs to all :)

Welcome to the club! The subject and now even the format is always kept a surprise until the last moment. We don't even know when the next one will be!
We usually have unofficial ones for Halloween and Xmas/New Year. These are called "fun clips" and can be created any time you feel inspired as long as they feature Pinhead.

Hi All,
Just wanted to say that as usual, we will probably add an extension to the project. As it is, I will be on vacation from Feb 26 to March 6 and the week before that is Reading Week at University and my daughter will be home. So, I wouldn't have time to sort this out which means we should probably just decided on an extension right now.
I would propose that perhaps we make it the first day of Spring which I think is March 21. Would that be okay with everyone?

Hi Alley - I think postponements are rather the norm, aren't they -- BTW first day of spring is Sunday, March 20, 2016 (easiest way to remember is on even years, it's the 20th, odd years it's the 21st).... So can you maybe clarify, do folks have till the 1st day of Spring on March 20th or till the 21st??? (Not that 24 hours is going to matter much)... :D

@budbundy - how cute is that - Pinhead's got some cool moves, even in 2D!!! LOL Blinded Me with Science..... don't know if "Poetry in Motion" is synonymous with Pinhead - what a total hoot that clip was! Question - did you create the dance motion or use a pre-done motion sequence - either way, Pinhead was doing a good job keeping time to the beat of the music (not always the easiest task to accomplish)! Well done - can't wait to see more....
|
By Skuzzlebutt - 9 Years Ago
|
the motion was canned however i did adjust the speed until it looked ok. this end sequence is basically the opposite of the concept for the storyline, nothing moves but the background is 3d.
based on this tutorial minus the toonit filter and color corrections. one can whip through this quickly when using pngs and google images for bgs.

Hope I'm starting-out right.
I have the one main iC5 Project. As I move through the Project & apply Animations, I'll be Saving each of those as a JPEG 1280 x 720 HD Image & Importing those into my NLE Program. Although I've Downloaded the Talk Bubbles, I haven't a clue how to input text etc; in iClone. However I have Photoshop Elements that I think has Talk Bubbles & can input Text. So will need to do that first, 5 before Importing into NLE Program.
Here's a Pic of one introductory Cast lead-in Pics. Will be Titled; Pinhead & Boo, as Dick Dastardly & his Dog Muttley, using my NLE Prog Titling Prog. Hope I don't get don't for Copyright infringement. :ermm:

In Photoshop Elements, I would use a separate layer for your text balloons and then save out your image and your balloons separately (that is, your image is just used as a reference to place the balloons). That way in your NLE you can then fade the text balloons in and out separate form the image to give the impression of a succession in the dialog.

There will be minimal dialog(ue);). Good way of avoiding having to include a lot of talk bubbles:D

Hi everyone...just catching up on the thread. I think March 21 which is a Monday should be the closing date as it gives the full last weekend to finish up. Thanks budbundy for posting the tutorial on the credit sequence - what program is that done it? If I have missed posting any entries of people who have joined, please nudge me. Thanks! @colour - how I did my text overlays was to open the text bubble in photoshop, and added the text on a different layer, then saved as a png so now text is on the bubble. In Pinnacle, I added the text bubbles on the "Text" overlay track and had them fade in and fade out. I put the candle flame on the video overlay track - I had a candle flame with alpha background rendered which I positioned over the candle. As Studio 15 only has one video overlay track, I rendered the movie and then started a new project with the rendered movie...then I put the hearts and the tears on a separate overlay track and re-rendered. This of course was not the most clever way to do things, just wanted to demonstrate the concept. You guys have taken this a whole lot further with your creativity from what I've seen so far.

i built all the assets and rendered out about 40 panels in january, however, i got wrapped up in a group project doing post work. just about done with that, so i probably can crank something out before the deadline.
just a note to those that cant get a concept going: go out and buy any random comicbook, and use it as a storyboard template <--- everything you need is in there. it doesn't have to be a superhero comic, even a issue of archie and jughead will do. just change up the charactors and plot enough so you dont get "sued" lol. btw, all media is based on theme and variation.
i was going do a variation on the groot/rocket racoon origin story, because it's hilarious but changed my mind...

That is a favorite story of mine, and I loved seeing it brought to life through your Pinhead clip. (Hmm, that's a bit ironic.)

Thanks guys, my fate on this forum seems tied to Pinhead…he goes I go ;) @Job – watched “Playing Dead”, very nice…I thought it was going to be a tough lesson in irony about 3/4 of the way through...I can hear that sound effects really adds to the experience, as did the animated text bubbles. Darn…that’s going to be extra work in post! The page flipping is quite nice too.

@Daniel: Thanks! Other than with most of my productions, this one actually went rather quick. There were also lot of assets and setups that I could reuse so that helped.
Although we are allowed to have camera movements, I wanted to try and create an actual comic book. I then found a page turning effect in Sony Vegas that looked good. The sound and the timing of the panels and the speech bubbles turned out to be great ways to pace the story. It's like turning the pages quicker when the story gets exiting.

Just to keep this Thread on top for taste, here's Alley as Penelope Pitstop at the start of Pinhead's Wacky Races, with Joe & Gerry as the Gruesome Twosome. I'm sure they'll like to know that. ;)Anyone-else got any WIP Pics?
Looks good, Peter! Alley and her ride look very classy, as is to be expected. I wonder what's up with the horse...

@Pumeco, Thanks for the compliment. I think there might have been some luck involved, but I'm glad you like it. It will be interesting to see how my many shots survive when I get the dialogue added in. I'm sure there will be plenty of compositional shortcomings by the time I'm done, so enjoy that picture while you can.
@Colour, Fishing? You'll have to wait and see. But I can tell you he will not have a horse in the canoe. You have dibs on Dobbin for this project.

I'm glad you thought of that. It most certainly entered my mind, too. For a while I included one "inside joke" about the origin of the canoe, but then I decided to pull it out to avoid confusing other people. Maybe I'll have to put that in a "director's cut" later (or just post the single frame on the forum after I've submitted my entry).
Good luck.

As always, these projects require a surprising amount of bookkeeping and organizational management. I'm finding myself working differently than usual, making individual still images, and utilizing a new piece of software into the process, so that changes things.
As I worked yesterday, I was finding that my organization strategy was: A) Brilliant, B) Wrong, C) Had gaps, D) All the above. The answer, of course, is "D."
So, what to live with? What to fix? What to do differently going forward (and having an inconsistent schema)?
It's the old analogy of taking time to sharpen your ax. At some point, that's time well spent. So I spent my first hour this morning doing clean-up, much of which might never be necessary, but as I get closer to the deadline I hope the investment will pay off by saving time and reducing stupid errors when I'm in a hurry.
Oh well... as long as I've spent this much time writing this non-productive post, I might as well post another picture.

My initial thought, looking at all those bags of gear, was that he's preparing for a week camping wild on Dartmoor, but not with a boat he isn't. Obviously a new hobby of his, boating, and he's just bought all the kit.

Hey Peter, was going to comment on yours a while back, but didn't. I was trying to remember the name of a film it reminded me of, and I still can't remember it even now. It's an old film (but it was filmed in colour if I recall), where there's a bunch of driving partners having a race across the country in old-fashined cars - styled like the ones you're using. I'd recognise the name as soon as I hear it, but can't pull it from the back of my mind.

I can picture, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." That involved a zany, cross-country race to retrieve a buried treasure. Pinhead would have felt right at home in that movie.

@Duchess That's one of my favourite films, that is! ... it's even got my favourite Supercar in it ... Lamborghini Countach! But no, not that, the one I meant is way older than that, it had really old-style cars like in Peter's images.
And anyway, there's no way Pinhead could ever afford a beast like this :

@Dennis No, not that one either, but it looks a lot closer! I think it was a British movie if that helps.

I've posted the latest two entries. Tomorrow I'll work on also notating who they are by to make it easier. I presume I might see a couple of more entries by tomorrow. Now folks....I have no idea how to set up a vote for you all. The software I use (Web Plus) does not seem to have this function and I really don't know how to do it. I know there are free softwares but I wouldn't have a clue how to set something up and link it to our website.
So unless someone can think of another way to do this, we might have to skip the on-line vote. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

Yes Survey Monkey looks very easy to set up and free. i did register and start to set one up but then i realised i didn't know how you wanted to judge. Would be selecting one film as our favourite or a first, second and third choice or would we be voting for different categories (story, soundtrack...). i would happily set it up if I knew what was wanted.

Not wanting to put a downer on anything, but if Surveymonkey requires sign up (and it looks like it does), a lot of people won't use it.
That said, wouldn't it be better to just run the voting here on the website by using a Poll thread?
All you'd need to do is list each entry as a poll option, and people could vote by voting right here on the forum. If you need more than one category, you could even run more than one Poll thread and then add the totals of each thread at the end. I could be wrong, but I think a Poll thread right here on the forums would be a lot better and a lot easier than using external websites or having to install a voting system.

About the survey...
I thought about the forum first, but was pretty sure it's quite limited in functionality.
Do you need to register with Survey Monkey to *participate* in the survey, or only if you are the one *creating* the survey? I'm pretty sure I've used it before, and I know I've never registered there. I don't really know anything about it, though, other than it popped into my head.
About 3DStory... I'm sorry to hear you won't get your video entered last night or even today. Looking forward to seeing it though.

@Peter – I guess that’s up to Alley, and the rest of the community. Perhaps if I can get it done by the time the voting system is organised? About Survey Monkey: I've received polls from them and I didn't need to sign up. I believe you just make a link available for the voters.
Apart from the limitations, what I don't like about a poll on the forum is that intermediate results are visible before the voting is over.

If not, you can submit it as a Fun Clip when completed (possibly as a full Animation & not Comic Book style?). Pinhead's Website has a Fun Clips Section.. .

Comic Relief Vote
Okay, my thanks to the Survey Monkey suggestion and the Vote is now officially up. Reminder...please only vote once - it's okay if your friends and family vote provided they actually watched the videos. The votes are for the "Golden Pinhead" Awards which are decided by the community. We would love for all members of the community to vote - not just the participants so thank you in advance. The vote will remain active for a couple of weeks probably. We'll keep you posted.
As for the prizes, we have decided that we will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and the winners will be able to pick their prizes in that order. For the balance of participants, there are enough prizes for everyone to get something so we will draw your names to place the order for which you get to pick from the lot. It is obvious that everyone of you put a tremendous effort into the submissions and frankly, they are all deserving and full of merit. We thank you for embracing this concept which was quite different from any other project.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place are decided by the Committee but we have also asked for some help and opinions from 2 Amazing iClone Filmmakers and former participants. Mark and Mythical Dragon will also weigh in on their favourites to help us make the final decision.
You guys are all awesome! If I can figure out how to embed the link to the survey on the website, I will - otherwise I guess we just try to keep bumping the link here so people can find it.
3dStory - once you have posted your video, I'll add it to the survey. So if people want to wait before voting, that's fine.

Thanks Alley
Just to advise people that when I was "testing" Surveymonkey yesterday it logs your IP address and therefore only allows you to vote once from a given computer. Some may worry about the security implications but Alley will be able to delete the survey when judging is complete.
Also is it worth starting a separate thread for the vote so it is clearly visible to the iclone community at large Thanks

toonarama (3/23/2016) Just to advise people that when I was "testing" Surveymonkey yesterday it logs your IP address and therefore only allows you to vote once from a given computer.
QUESTION: Can you "review" the survey to see what the questions are, and still vote? Or would going to the survey (but not voting) block you from voting later?
I think I know the answer, but figured I'd ask anyway.
I like to know what the voting categories are prior to re-watching all the videos. (Best story, best music, best cinematography, etc.)
We should post the questions here... and/or Alley could add them to the "Voting" thread.
|
By toonarama - 9 Years Ago
|
Here are the questions you need to consider when watching for the voting
1. What do you think was the best video overall? The one that "wowed" you the most based on all aspects.
2. Which video do you think was the most technically savvy? Maybe the story wasn't quite as intriguing but technically it was brilliant.
3. Which video do you think had the best storyline? Aside from all else, which one was the most immersive?
4. Which video made the best use of sound effects?
5. Which video presented the most original use of speech bubbles and narratives to advance the story?
6. Which video had the best "posed" comic frames, including "Expressions"?

I'm really pleased that so many of you were able to finish your videos. I've watched each of them and as always there is a great variety of all the trouble Pinhead gets into. I wonder of some of it is autobiographical?
I will be away over Easter without any on-line access, so it's good we have some time for voting. I'd like to revisit each video, as it's been a while since I've seen some of them (including my own).

@Peter – thanks, and thanks again for emailing me, or I wouldn’t have known the competition was on. As usual I learnt a lot of new things (Comic Life, how to take 7hrs to render 4min of footage etc.). @Dennis – Yes, I was careful in the selected poses though :) This time around I created the story frame by frame…i.e. I did not create a script to follow. Strange what comes into one’s head sometimes…
@Alley – Thanks for adding me!! May I request a “subscribe” feature on the new web site? That way folks can be notified when there is some Pinhead action, particularly for slackers like me that don’t monitor the forum, and disappear for long periods of time …
Finally, I can kick back and enjoy the rest of the entries and then vote.

Hi community, May I say the entries for this competition are outstanding which I found voting hard to do like 3DStory has mentioned. Nonetheless, it has been done and again, it has been a joy to take part and to each and everyone, the best of luck. Peace Gerskey.

Gerskey (3/31/2016) Hi community, just showed my Pinhead Comic video, the Grumpy Old Man, to my family. Aww sorry guys It could have been better sorry. xox to my cousins in Ireland to England and America sorry guys xx Sorry I'm learning xox. Peace Gerskey Hey Gerskey - don't be hard on yourself, I really enjoyed your animation too. I gave up showing my animations to my family a long time ago because they were never very impressed. I think it was partly because they were not great fans of animation anyway, but more importantly there only terms of reference are professional animations. They don't understand what is involved in creating them. Take the constructive criticism, ignore the negative stuff and listen to the community (they know best). Good luck! Mick

Family response...
I have the same issue. On one hand, they're very supportive. But on the other hand, their animation reference points are Pixar and DreamWorks, and they just don't get it.
Sometimes, without intending to be cruel, people completely miss the story because they're so busy commenting on (or asking about) every flaw... Why did his foot slide? His finger went right through the handle of his coffee cup. Can she comb her hair, what would happen? That truck didn't sound real. ...and so on...
As a person who is most interested in telling a story, I'm sitting there in agony as they miss all the dialogue and probably don't even know what the story was about by the time they're done watching. That's not always the case, but it certainly has happened.
At times like that, you have to remind yourself that you do it for your own enjoyment.

I agree with Viking (well stated)..... My siblings & my grown children are often my hardest critics - However - my grandbabies think the stuff I create is fun & awesome (the oldest - 5 yrs - will often sit in my lap to "help grammy make a new dolly" - that's what she calls avatars)... I do what I do because I love doing it.... the folks in the RL community know how tedious it can get trying to perfect the craft we all appreciate the tremendous amount of effort, creativity & skill that each & every person puts into their compositions.... Just seeing the creative process in action & what people come up with tickles me pink! I enjoy it immensely.... Constructive criticism is always helpful, but nit-picking should be ignored.... Do the best you can, stretch your imagination and hone your skills & enjoy every minute - life's too short to worry about the small stuff!

Wise words from wise Folk .;)
You've submitted wonderful Prize & Award-winning Clips over the years, for which the Pinhead Community & others are extremely grateful. :)
I don't take any notice of those who pick holes in my Clips, because they're full of holes to start with, anyway. :D . I love Pinhead (he's been Family for many of us since Project 1 in 2006), the Pinhead Projects & the Community spirit. Thanks for being an important part of that Community spirit. :)

Learners like myself and experts alike are all our own worst critics but for those outsiders who know little or nothing about the time and effort needed to produce anything creative who then look at our work and compare it to Pixar or Disney etc can be very difficult to deal with. This is why this forum is so important to all of us, not only for the help and support but for the "well done's" and "good job" we need to hear now and again to keep us going. Keep up the great work everyone. We all appreciate what we do.

@Gerskey: I would like to chime in and confirm what others have said. I revisited your clip and found it again very funny and nicely done. Maybe your family and friends are just grumpy and recognize themselves...:P
I now have the difficult task to start voting. There's definitely merit in all of the clips, so I wish there were as many questions as movies to acknowledge the creative effort of each of you.
EDIT: As a reminder to any members who want to vote, here is the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KCNQP2N. The page with all the entries is here: http://pinheadadventure.com/page4.html.

To be honest, I wasn't too fond of the Comic idea at first, but now I've seen them all I've changed my mind, was definitely enjoyable. Haven't voted yet, I can put some votes to some categories, but others are really hard to decide between so I'll sleep on it, might even watch them again tomorrow!

pumeco (4/2/2016) To be honest, I wasn't too fond of the Comic idea at first, but now I've seen them all I've changed my mind, was definitely enjoyable.
That's one of the many things I enjoy about the Pinhead projects... they get people to try new things.
Sometimes it's a specific genre or an interesting topic. In this case a specific artistic approach, yet even then there was quite a variation in style. I was happy it was well suited for the old-school "2D Pinhead," which is what I first thought I would revert back to for this contest. I anticipated some good use of Indigo since they were stills rather than video.
This time the project lead to a new tool for me: Comic Life. I used a trial version for the project, but I think I'll be buying it just to have around. I have more to learn about it, but it was fun to use.
And, yes, it's been so fun to see all the entries. I need to do a "serious" watching of them again, now that I know what the voting categories are. A fun task, for sure.
@Alley... Please remember give us a good heads-up prior to the close of voting, once you decide when the polls will close.

justaviking (4/2/2016) I anticipated some good use of Indigo since they were stills rather than video.
While they are stills, I found that the ultra-realistic style achievable with Indigo wasn't really suited. Something more stylistic or "drawing-like" if you will turned out to work better for me.

This is weird...
In my browser, the time shows up as "00:00" and I was going to ask if that actually meant "Sunday night," not midnight Saturday.
When I quote your post, it magically shows up as "24:00" Sunday, which makes much more sense.
Very strange.
THANKS FOR THE UPDATE.

I had "movie night" with my wife last night. We watched all twelve entries and took notes on the various voting categories.
We are both in a horrible quandary because every video has wonderful things about it. And how do you compare a simple, sweet story with a more complex storyline? Is one better because there is "more to it" or is the other better because it left you with a good feeling? How do you compare dark and moody lighting with bright and happy lighting? They can both be done well while still being completely different from each other.
I've been feeling a real lack of discussion about the individual entries this time around. I'm thinking of writing up a "comment" post mentioning something I like about each one. I did that for Project 8, and it was fun. Sadly, we're already nearing the end of voting, and I'm going to unavailable tomorrow, but maybe I can get one done today.
I hope everyone else watches all the videos and enjoys them as much as we did.

I've voted. Those who Used "Comic Life" Prog, produced great "Comics". Rog & Jeff kept the 2D Pinhead tradition alive. The Projects wouldn't be the same without them. As usual, very difficult to choose the best Clip in each Category. I loved them all. Disappointed that Laura didn't submit. She's submitted in all the previous Projects. Robert was conspicuous by his absence.
Thanks to all who took a considerable amount of time, in producing clips for the longest-running Community Project that I'm aware of.
Thanks to the Committee, for making this possible, especially Alley. Their reward for their efforts, is as many clips we can produce. So, it's down to us to set-aside time, to support them. Thanks to Jeff for submitting 2.
We're all Prize-winners again this year, thanks to Alley's arm-twisting & the prize providers
Looking forward to The Golden Pinhead Awards.
Good luck everyone. . ..

Even though voting is done, I encourage anyone who hasn't already done so to watch at least some of the videos. http://pinheadadventure.com/ See the "Entries" page.
The style was different, but most people used iClone, and projects like this can inspire creative thoughts.
And it'll help entertain you while waiting for the Golden Pinhead Awards where the winners will be announced. (No planned date that I'm aware of, but I'm confident The Committee is working on it.)

Hi community, back from my 1st holiday abroad in Europe. Krakow in Poland is a lovely city so clean and so friendly. Food and Beer are plenty and people too. I got the chance to go on a few tours while there. Auschwitz Birkenau, Wieliczka Salt Mines, Zakopane Tatra Mountains ( Carpathian Mountain Range ) and last of all Oscar Schindler's sites. No amount of pictures can do it justice only the experiences of being there. Believe me, you'll shake your heads to what happened there during WWII. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone that believes that humanity today, still has lessons to learn. Peace Gerskey

Thanks for your generosity.
I tried making a Golden Pinhead once, based on the pictures I saw in the GPA ceremonies. In my daydreams, I wanted to get it 3D printed. I played with Sculptris and came to the conclusion 3D sculpting skills are horrible. I am comfortable with a 3D engineering design tool, but not the artsy software.
