Animation and motions question

Hi everybody

I'm still learning and haven't figured out this problem yet and not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Everytime I set up my scene with my character in place, and then I add a motion to the character, it will jump off the screen or the animation will start at another point.

My first question is how do you set up the motion to start at the point where you place the character into your scene.

Then my next question is how do keep your character in the ending position of the last frame of the motion. At times, when I add a motion such as falling over dead, the character jumps back up when I inteneded for it to stay in the dead position.

Does anyone know a link to a tutorial on working with adding the basic motions?
I'm sure it's something simple.

Thanks
STEVE

I will give a shot at your first question steve, open your show timeline at the bottom of Iclone 3 and then open your track list at the top and select your character then open the transform button and your motion layer button, this is where you will find alot of you movement you will probally have to add, move, copy or delete some keys to get your movement or motion right use your - or + to zoom in on your keys tracks to make your adjustment.

Hello Steve!

Your problem is not unique, you have a lot of company from people in different stages. Sometime I ask myself how to make the actors stop jumping back and forth..

One answer is that motion files are actually of very different quality!

Some motions just don't want to work together while other works just fine.

To be able to give you good answers I would like to know, WHAT iClone do you have?

A PRO version let's you handle the time line... a NORMAL registration is a bit more tricky..

Most of all, keep asking, we are many that gladly help you!

same thing happens here.... i found the best approach to this dilemma is to first pick the pieces that you wish to edit together, and get them as close as you can despite the glitching / jumping etc .....keep adjusting them in by moving the character around ..but here's the trick i found thats most crucial ...

Keep saving your work and reloading the file, ..once you do about 5 to 6 adjustments ...make a new file of your current adjustments , with errors and all ....then clear your timeline of all animation, reload it as a fresh file and continue tweaking. I've acquired a rather huge library of motions and i go through this regularly, its almost like molding clay, you just keep shaping till you have the desired outcome. Just keep saving the file and refreshing your timeline every 5 or 6 moves. This speeds up the process as too many moves causes the iclone math to make adjustments on the fly sometimes causing unwanted effects. Don't try to fix it all in one file, it just complicates things.

I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the comments and help on my questions. At first I thought it was something I was doing wrong and it seems like I spend an enormous amount of time trying to get one scene or edit the animation the way I vision it while working on a new project. Usually through a lot of search (especially in this forum and trial and error, I learn something new with iClone. Just thought I would ask if there was an easier way.

Someone asked what version of iClone I am using:
I'm using the latest Pro version 3.2

Well I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in this problem.

Thanks again for the help and comments.

Are any of you folks out there experienced with professional video production?

Perhaps you can tell us how to workaround this issue using cut-away shots.

I have a feeling that could provide radical relief.

Jumping up dead people can be scary...  I once had a dead person in a scene that suddenly opened his eyes...

One thing you could try is to create a motion clip with just the dead position.  Copy your project, and move your cursor to the final frame with the desired dead pose.  Right-click your character and select "Remove all animation".  That should give you the character in the position you want.

I have to improvise a bit here, but I think you should now open the timeline and open the Transformation and Motion Editor tracks (I think that's how they're called) for the character, as well as the Collect Clip track.

You may have to add a additional key frames in the Transformation and Motion Editor tracks, but idea is to make a selection of part of the timeline in Collect Clip.  Now right-click and select "Add to library" and save the pose as a file.

In your original project you can now append the new motion clip at the end of your animation and your person should stay dead.  It SHOULD also be in the right location.  If needed you can expand the motion clip or append another copy.

No takers, eh?

I stand by these comments.

If you're smart, you'll take this under advisement.

I say: we're not getting the most out of iClone because we don't take the craft of film editing seriously.

People are so impatient...

I agee about the importance of film editing and I do take it seriously... :w00t:

To answer your question, I use iClone just to generate basic scenes (as image sequences).  I do most of the editing, including adding sound and music, in Vegas.

Hi Paumanok,

I agree with you. I recommend a course called HollywoodCameraWork.

Cheers

this book is a great read as well:

The Five C's of Cinematography: Motion Picture Filming Techniques

I highly recommend it. ;)
