Can we still map photos onto faces

With the new CC, are we still able to map photographs onto avatars heads like we used to be able to, with a wizard that walked you through it, or do we have to rely on our own manual manipulations and UVs to get a photo face onto an avatar?

I wondered the same. I just went through the manual and there doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to do it. I recall Peter mentioning that face-mapping would still be an option in iClone. However, there is no face-mapping option in iClone for a character created with CC.

You could do it now with a different approach. Peter mentioned 6.3 as a goal to get a new face-mapper in.

What you could do now is export the UV or diffuse of a CC face, and match a picture of your face to it in an image editor (using distortion tools to fit it exactly). Then you'd load it up, and morph the CC head to have the same features as yours.

You probably need the essentials pack to get the more subtle morphs.

This method id a long standing method in traditional 3D applications, but iClone has always had the wizard to walk a user through this, without having to worry about manually warping and manipulating the image to force it to fit.  I do not wish to do it this way, and am irked that RL once more pulled out a core fundamental functionality of the software that has been a long standing asnd easy to use feature in lieu of a more manual, tedious, and error prone system.

We are currently working on an improved version of the "Create Face" feature. This should come in the 6.3 update.

The new version which also links with CrazyTalk 8 is currently scheduled for the 4th quarter but as always this is subject to change.

There is no way to map a face but with about 225 morph targets on the head alone, you should be able to come up with some pretty cool looking models. I plan to fool around with today and see what I can come up with.

True, but if you want to "clone" a family member, it's still a good capability to have.  I look forward to seeing what the 6.3 update will bring in that regard.

What is usually done in this case is rather to duplicate the original UVs, then modify the second UVs set to match the picture (instead of distorting the picture), then bake ("rendermap") the result into the original UVs set. The picture will be warped automatically. It is much easier to modify a UVs set to match an image than doing the opposite. This is the same technique used as when you do camera mapping with several images then bake the result into a final image with a proper UVs set.
