A UI button that:

1. Skips lighting shadows
2. Treats all materials as casting and receiving no shadows
3. Treats all materials as having Self-Illumination = 100%
4. Treats all materials as having Glossy, Specular = 0%
5. Skips all material channels except Diffuse and Opacity

Paumanok West, I'm glad you're reminding them of our wish to see "Cell Shading" (or "Toon Shading") incorporated into iClone. And your request is very specific this time.

But, I think it might help to remind everyone that this topic was brought up before:

That said, there are several variations on Cell Shading and Toon Shading and different users may prefer different styles. That is, as a matter of artistic style and taste.

What you propose sounds good and simple. But maybe it'd be better if the steps 1 through 5 you mentioned could be individually turned on or off? And perhaps even allow the user to adjust the Self-Illumination and Glossy, Specular anywhere from 0 to 100% for all materials? Just a thought.

Oh, a slider for "Toonousity." Good idea. :D

Great suggestions. Thanks for sharing them. :)

Hi Paumanok West,

We are most grateful for your suggestion. This request has been conveyed to our developing team, and afterwards we will evaluate the feasibility. It may be possible to be implemented in future releases.

That... would... be... FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! Yes I actually CAN do it in post (in virtualdub they have a toon filter) but to do it there would be great!.

On the other programs that have this, they have outline size, toon shading (the shade isn't a gradiant, just one darker version of the same color) and other effects like paintbrush, pastels, pencil, and just cartoon.

Hey Cube, can you show us a screen shot of your results with that filter?

I might add that as things stand, perhaps you know, I advocate tooning the model itself, not the output. But then, I don't have outlines or toon shadows, both of which would be ideal.

yaeh I can do that but... I'd have to rerender the video and resetup the lighting so that when it hits the filter, it does it right. ... or do I... Let's see.

*does it*

Nope. It can do outlines and stuff, but you have to have really flat bright lighting... and maybe selfillumination. The video I rendered won't work, you also have to have HDR turned off in order for it to work.

The plugin is called MSU Cartoonerizer. I have version 3. It's free. Set up the lighting right and you can have some pretty nice effects. You don't want a lot of shading going on otherwise it'll not look quite right.

You may need only a few directional lights for lighting the scene even. These are just theories as I haven't ried it yet though.

Yes, toonshading would be great in iClone. I made a post on this a while back but no one responded to it...

I am so glad to hear that this is being looked at.

I'm going to suggest next what I believe I need, and I think it extends to the eLearning applications of iClone as well. I am happy to be correct if I am wrong about that.

I am currently working on a very large job (largest eLearning effort I've ever been involved in - and it will continue for several years) and iClone is up for selection as one of the 'workhorse tools'. I believe that it will be selected regardless of these suggestions, but if iClone provided these features then it would certainly make my life easier.

Firstly, the only resistance we have to iClone comes from the 'creepiness' factor of almost but not quite 100% realistic characters. For what its worth my own wife refuses to watch the original Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds, for that very reason. She reacted the same way to the Capt. Scarlet remake. But not Cameron's Avatar, so there is hope for her yet.

With iClone however, that is someway off. So my suggestion is not only for a toon-based render but other renders, such as what can be achieved out of Sketch-up - line-based with flat colour & textured underlay etc. I have found that viewers who have been put off by the "not quite 100% realism" love the flat 2D look. The word they use most is "comforting" as in "that is much more comforting".

Secondly, I'd like to eliminate part of my workflow. If I want a chromakey effect, at the moment I export from iClone with a flat colour screen and then import it into Premier for colour keying to flv format. I have to do this so that I can supply the multimedia development team with media they can use (flv & f4v only) and I cannot export iClone content as flv/f4v that includes an alpha channel - that I am aware of.

It's a time consuming process, and it falls down when there are glow effects on the presenter (such as the reflective panels on modern hi-viz work uniforms). It would be immensely valuable to be able to export from iClone to flv/f4v with alpha channels.

Please consider both of these workflow and client-based issues when considering the potential for additional rendering options.

Thanks for such a fantastic product, even 8 months after discovering the product, I am still amazed at how easily it can do the most amazing things.

Mike

I like that line idea. There is something nice about it.

As for the characters looing not quitre real. Yes, in some cases, they don't look too reat, but I know they are working on making them more realistic. (G4 characters)

And with the higher graphics cards getting easier to own, this should work well.
