Very informative Mike, will your tutorials be located in one location and available for download?
By Apparition - 16 Years Ago
They will be offered as an Appariton training product download at the ContentStore.

It will include complete tutorials to do most of all things possible.

But they are free to watch at this friendship forum guild!

A few visitors are the lucky ones!

Excellent tutorial Mike, and another very generous offering.  I had a go.....and made a few mistakes which I will rectify next time around (hopefully) :) but here's what I ended up with

Other than my own silly mistakes.....the only little bit I had difficulty with in understanding from the tutorial Mike, was 'selecting the element on the mapping'...but I worked it out.  Just thought this might help anyone else finding the same.

Thank again, Mike, very interesting indeed.

Shy :)

Excellent Mike. Really well put together. Your fellow developers should be much appreciative of this tutorial. Great job. I am sure you will inspire more people to try this should they have max.

Once again Great Job!! ;)

Thanks Shy!

As it happened, I had to edit a couple of times and it resulted in a somewhat obscure part at the point of selecting and arranging the mapping elements.

I did not explain well there, and my chihuahuas were bothering me as much as they could.

By such expression I meant to select the frontal mapping element so as to separate both because one is on top of the other.

With a little practice you will master the process.  Do it several times and do it with the Male character as well.

When you want to perfect certain mapping areas, like in the bossom middle, you can go to the UnwrapUVW Modifier edit window and, setting the select vertex mode, select only those critical vertex areas, to do a partial relax on them, always protecting the outside boundaries with the check box.

Also the small areas at the axillar region need a little bit of tweaking.  It can also be done by hand and I will make a small tutorial on tweaking so you learn how to adjust small mapping distortions.

What I forgot to say is:   After pushing the mesh into a thicker one, go back to the Unwrap UVW edit window, and REPEAT THE RELAXATION PROCESS, exactly as it is done the first time. Pushing always affects coordinates a little bit.

I am sure you realized the fact this mapping technique allows to make much easier connections in the clothing and the horizontal alignment is so good it is very practical to cut the opacity map.   Maybe you can make a better template, instead of using the rendered one.   It would be good to have a template with clever cut lines.

Another fact is at this point we are not using the "lower" part at all, so we can create two complete layers which, rather than being "upper and lower" in height they would be in depth, one above the other.

At my next tutorial I will show how to edit, relax and mould the mesh into new shapes.

I hope you will come up with your own character collection soon!

Another thing I forgot to say is:

When creating the material for the clothing, be sure you set the material color boxes to pure white 240.   If not, the materials will be dark in nature.  This can also be corrected at iClone by raising the diffuse and ambient response color boxes as well.

I will also explain this in next tutorial.

Sorry for the omission!

Looking forward to seeing the next tutorial Mike. You are doing a great job!!!

Thanks for the Skin Wrap tip I had never looked at that when I was doing skinning funny enough. Great tool!!

By Apparition - 16 Years Ago
Hi Popeye!

Yea!  Skinwrap is a VERY interesting tool but scary to many, as it is difficult to understand how simple it is.   With it you can translate practically any skin to ANY object... (hummmm)

Let's see what you do....

Thanks for your great appreciation.  It is invaluable to me!

Once again you have put together a perfectly paced and relaxed tutorial Mike. :)

Thank you for the taking the time to share your expertise with everyone.

Mike, I'm pleased to see that you plan to monetize your tutorials.

Good for you; there is no need for artists and engineers to give away too much.

Of course, we're all grateful for your pro-bono contributions so far!

Thanks for that, Mike Apparitio.

That was a much more professional tutorial than those I have seen on Reallusion or YouTube as yet. Well done!

Amateur tutorials take the medieval spell recipe approach: you do this, you do that, you do the other, turn around three times , clap your hands and the demon appears!

That approach may impress the beginners as slick, but it does not teach very well. You do not know why you are doing the things you are doing. You don't know what has gone wrong if anything goes wrong. You cannot recover from errors except by going back to the beginning and starting all over again.

What I suggest is needed is an approach that keeps looking forward and back - tell the people what you are going to do, do it, and tell them what you've done. This applies in mebbe three layers - at the beginning, in the main sections, and for each of the individual tasks.

I don't know whether you expected reactions like mine - but when I first watched the video I was disappointed as it seemed to be talking about skin rather than cloth. Not until you got to the point of talking about the PUSH 40 function and parameter did I begin to see where you were going.

And leave the chihuahuas in - it makes a good running gag.
By Apparition - 16 Years Ago
Dear Sean!

I appreciate your input.   Your suggestions are to be considered but I would like you to think about several things.

The Post title clearly says you are going to be making clothing. Right?  Sometimes we skip titles.  I agree!  But it certainly is well said at the beginning. ;)

In this case I wanted to put together a one piece tutorial which would be revealing to those already immersed in MAX developing and having certain doubts about how to go.  Going at a swing pace, from beginning to end, with turn around and repeats, explanations, etc, would make this tutorial about 1 or two hours long!

But I trusted the Shockwave Flash Object video, as you can go back as many times as you want and repeat any part as to be the teacher's assistant for those rascal students which usually don't pay a lot of attention! :D

I liked the "clap the thing" comment!  Actually I would like you to do it!  Follow the tutorial, do the thing, clap at the end and you will have several "skin layers" or clothing layers with different push factors, anyway you would like to call them, to easily paint textures on them and make clothing.

Just as the title says.   I am sorry if you got confused at the beginning but I am sure you will catch up!

Thanks again!

That is an excellent tutorial Mike, It has really given me an insight into the development side of iClone and Max tools, and increased my knowledge on how the magic you do, is achieved. Thanks.

I will be watching this tutorial quite a few more times, as it really is informative and interesting and you made it understandable, not like a lot of Max tutorials I have watched, which usually bore the pants off me.

Please do some more, podcasts would be a good idea too.

Give the doggies a big rub on their heads for me :).

Show me the way to go, you are a good instructor.

Christy.

Weekend I will do a tutorial (magistral, ha,ha,ha) on how to create and attach skirts to another layer.  I hope you all, dear friends learn this, as it is very important all pioneers deflate our egos:)

Thanks ChristyO!

I eventuall would like design some avatars and create clothing. I would like to take this tutorial as I'm a new user to 3dMax, but I don't have the G3Female07.max  file. I looked in the Developer Center and I'm not sure about this but do I have to apply to get the G3Female07.max file. I clicked on the apply link and I seemed to have received an error message. Does anyone know what a certified artist is and what it i need to do get certified?

Or can I get the G3Female07.max file without becoming a certified artist?

Thanks in advance.

By Bigboss - 15 Years Ago
Dear dear stooges,...

Just to answer your other question...If things haven't changed, you need to apply as a CCD Developer to get the MAX Female07 Templates. Part of the application requires you send some textured characters using current iCone characters such as Violet to demonstrate your talent.

Thanks.

Hi Apparition,

Great Tutorial! Thank you for sharing your experience.

Unfortunately I was not able to get a satisfying result. The posture animation did not work (nothing happend when I loaded it) and I tryed to pose the character by myself in the same way you did but I really don't know if I did it in a proper way.
Furthermore it was not possible for me to weld the edges. The number of the vertexes only reduced when the value was at 8000 and that caused the issue you can see in the picture.

I would very much appreciate if you could help me and maybe tell me what went wrong:)

In this picture you can see the result of my efforts.

Thanks a lot!
digiMagic

By Apparition - 15 Years Ago
Hi DigiMagic!

It seems you must weld the edges between upper and lower PRIOR to slicing the mesh in two.

You should not alter the mesh too much by optimization, as it will make it not skin properly. Actually adding polygons at joint areas can make it skin MUCH better.

You are using MAX so you will find the checkers map right at the Architectural material folder!

Follow the tutorial closer as it seems you are missing some details.

Write to me at meaparicio@inadep.com

Thank you for posting!

Hi Mike. I was trying to learn this wonderful tutorial, but I have a first problem, may you help me?

My problem is that I can't download the 'CutPosture' and the 'Black&white jpg' because when I click the right button of my mouse it doesn't tell me save object, but only 'save link' or 'open link'.
This is a very big problem, because I need that posture.

Regards

Michela

Save Link should work fine. There's another way, though, if it's not working for you.

When you click on the links, and they open inside the browser, go to File - Save As and simply save it where you want. It's the same as right-clicking and downloading for these two files.

Today I made many tries on this tutorial. The biggest trouble I found is this: I followed the tutorial step by step (I converted it into a skin, etc.) but every time I arrive at the end, the new mesh doesn't follow the skin layer. In fact in iClone It stands still and can't even be moved by the mouse. In the video belowe you can see the result: :(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQYZR4Q2NkI
(the character laughs because he's making fun of me. LOL)

And to say my first trouble (I think it may be somehow good to know): the CutPosition doesn't work on the 3dsMax I use (2010). In fact you can see it from these two shots belowe, where the first one is the initial Reallusion position and the second is after having applied the CutPosition:
Anyway, the problem is already solved as I found that the file is an animation where at the end the character gets the T pose. So I started building the mesh on the last frame.
By Apparition - 14 Years Ago
Hi folks!
I have not been very frequent to the forum. I am sorry having abandoned you all!

OritentLove:

The Cutposture is actually an animation file in standard MAX format so it is not version dependent.

It seems you are forgetting to select ALL the RL bones before you load the CutPosture file.

Anyhow, CUtPosture is just that; a posture! The idea is to place the character body in a way you can trace a vertical line and it divides the mesh into proportional front and rear parts. It is difficult but once you have the body posing the right way, when you slice, the two "shells" should be almost the same amount of polygons. This will make a better mapping template to design clothing on them.

IF someone is having problem accomplishing the task, check a post above where you can see Trinity well done, by Dulce, showing the tutorial works!

When you say the skin does not follow at iClone it sounds like you are forgetting to do the "Convert To Skin" step, when using Skin Wrap.

I hope you find this explanations useful. I will review the tutorial and see if I can add more detail in another one.

Glad to be here!

Mike

This is a very good looking and well done tutorial, Mike. :) Thanks for sharing.
Alas, I work with Blender, so I'm hoping that there will be some similarities in the UI that will allow me to adapt this tutorial to Blender usage. :)

I cannot download the files reguardless of the method I use. It asks for a user name and password.
