Eye blink problem revisited with example

Have noticed a few others having issues with slow eye blinking in Crazy Talk 5 Pro.

Don't think I have seen a solution – hope this provides some extra data.

As with the others, when recording the animation, the eyes blink at the correct speed. When playing it back, it looks like the character is having trouble staying awake, with a very slow eye blink. The effect is funny, but not what I am looking for. The slow blink remains, regardless of output file format.

Click here for the link to the movie of the Narcoleptic Dog.

Here are some specifics on the project itself:

** Animated from a still photo
** Animated in layers / passes, not all at once
** Eye blinks animated separately, using solo feature selection in the Puppeteering Panel.

It seems the problem comes from layering the eye blinks along with other facial animation passes. And somewhere in the mixing process (blending the eye blink keyframes in) there is a problem. Almost like some of the blink keyframes drop out.

Creating the slower eye blink.

If I just have eye blinks along with the lip sync, it works fine.

But once I add in head rotation and raised eyebrows and other facial animation, the blink problem returns. It doesn't matter if I add the eye blinks first or last.

Hope this is helpful in figuring this out.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for taking the time to explain your thoughts on this "Eye Blinking" issue that seems to affect some CT users. I'll pass on your message to the Crazytalk team for their review. If I find out anything I'll update this thread with the information.

Thanks again. :)

I am also experienceing the very slow (and seemingly more extreme as well) blinking issue.

As a very poor workaround... I was able to get acceptable blinking by recording the eye blinks first by themselves, ungrouping the tracks and selecting all of the face keys and doing a copy to put all of the blink keys into the copy/paste buffer.

Then, without doing any operations to disturb the copy paste buffer, I puppeteered all of the other facial motion in several layers without doing any eye blinking, and finally, I ungrouped all of the layered facial animation and then pasted the eye blinks back in.

It works, but it's a very limiting and error prone way to get around the problem. I hope you can nail this down and release a patch for it soon.

What I ended up doing, which is a pain, is to add the eye-blinking manually by editing facial keys.  As you found out, if you paste in a key sequence, the keys may not merge correctly.

So what I do instead, is to select a point where I want the eye-blinking to occur. You need three keys close together.  The first and the third will have the eyes open, the second will have them closed and is the one to edit. I set Narrow Eyes and Blink Eyes (or however these parameters are called...) to maximum value.  (I then adjust the overal strength slider on the right so that the eyes are just closed.)  If I don't have three keys close together, I copy ones nearby to create a sequence of three.

It works, but it is tedious.  Has this been fixed in CT 6?

Since the release of Crazytalk 6.1 is anyone still experiencing this slow blinking issue?
By rob_20090922185142836 - 17 Years Ago

Yep. Just gave it a shot and I am still having the slow eye blink issue with Crazy Talk 6.1.

The model I applied it on, I used several passes of pupeteering and got the very slow eye blinks.

I also did it with a model where there was only a lip sync (no other facial animation) and the blinks worked.

So the problem seems to occur during the blending process, when using several passes of puppeteering.

Also during the actual puppeteering, while I am recording the blinks, they look fine.

But after the eye blink animation is blended with the previous animation I still get the tired eyes and the slow eye blink.

Hope that provides some help. But yes, I am still having an issue.

I am on a 9 month old Dell Vostro running XP SP3, with a Intel Core processor. Let me know if I can provide any other info to help get this fixed.

Dear customers,

About eye blinks, we suggest utilizing mouse to blink your eyes. Please follow the steps below.
(1) Click the ‘Puppeteering’ button (CT6: Puppet Control) to open ‘Puppeteering Panel’.
(2) Highlight ‘Eyelids’
(3) Click Preview and press Space key to start previewing. The cursor will automatically locate to the center of CrazyTalk window.
(4) Left-Click mouse
(5) Press Space key again to stop previewing.
(6) Click Record button and press Space key to start recording the motion puppeteered by your mouse. (Press Enter key to start half-speed recording mode)
(7) When the recording stops, keys will be collected automatically into the corresponding tracks.

Note: When you click on the mouse, you need to release the mouse button rapidly.

Finally, you can see that the speed of eye blinking would be improvement. However, we also found that the keys affect the eye blinking speed indeed. I am writing to everyone, this issue has been passed to our developing team. We are going to fix this issue soon.

Hi Mick:

Thanks so much for your follow up on this.

Read through your instructions, and yes, that's how I have been doing the eyeblinks.

With the exception of you tip to release the mouse btn quickly.

Re-did the puppeteering, staying very focused on releasing mouse btn very quickly. But same result - slow blinking.

Appreciate the fact you are aware of the issue and are working to resolve.

All the best,

Rob

Dear Rob,

Please try to do the following instructions in order to help you to solve your issue.

1) After the keys have been collected automatically into your timeline, please right click the MotionClip group, and then choose “Ungroup”.
2) Click anywhere before blink key on the Face track.
3) Click on “Key Editor” button to call out Key Editor.
4) Click on “Default Key” button in Key Editor.
5) Playback

Note. Please click the attachment and see this image.

We are wondering whether the speed of eye blinking improves. If the problem persists, we would be grateful if you could provide your project file to us. You can contact us via Support Form, and then you are able to attach your project file to us.

Hi Mick:

Let me just get you a copy of my project file.

I am doing quite a bit of puppeteering, so my face keyframe track is pretty crowded.

I will get that to you via the link you provided.

All the best,

Rob
