Hi Everyone,

I am new to iClone and would appreciate any help I can get to my below question.

Is it possible to apply a chess board texture created in photoshop to follow the ground of a specified area of the terrain I create in iClone? Any help is greatly appreciated.

@biggins - welcome to the forum!

the animating and technical part is easy, it's the stories that are hard lol
sounds like fun, would just be nice to do something with a bro :p

here's one track I've been trying to come up with an idea for https://soundcloud.com/anirhythm/drama

@biggins - swoop is right - with the exception of the heightmap terrain which doesn't have a formal uv. I'm sure it's planar though. - just about every other mesh allows you to view a uv map for your prop, when you call up your texture - place your uv map over it with a little transparency so you see how it's going to fit your model. - the uv map size is also relative - so if for example your terrain is 500 x 500 and your texture is 1k x 1k - just resize either one of them to match the other so you can see how it will translate in iclone. usually you want to resize the texture to fit the UV - but sometimes you want to keep the image hd, so you resize the uv to fit the larger texture - it will still be relative.

Before you guys get going and and lose sight of the OP's question this time, remember that it's worth being kind. We have all been new to things!

@biggins - yeah, we hijacked the thread, consider it like a royal welcome! :P

swoop, I discovered the UV trick recently designing a character ....as long as you don't change proportions it works - so if you make a 500 x 500 uv 1,000 x 1,000 it still wraps the same ....just don't change it from something like 500x500 to 500 x 250 - it has to be relative.

I do both, shorts when I have a quick fun idea ....and full length music video to pretend I'm on tv! lol :D - which I do have mtv accounts though, so I can send it to them for consideration to air in their networks.

I'm happy you enjoyed the track, if you or anyone wants a copy of any of my releases, email me - iclone community special, me love u long time! <3

the main idea that's hit me so far with that track is a space battle video, 2nd idea a godzilla video ..but tracking with real footage, make a movie preview, with compositing and the whole 9!! that'd be the 30-60 second clip! You down ? i put you in credits and give you some gawd like illuminati director title for your imdb page! we call you sw00000p Awesomeberg or something!! -makes director hands- Aaaaaction!! \:cool:/

if you really want to do it, maybe we should start a new production thread!

i'll do that part with hit film, we green screen a zilla in iclone - need people running around like fruitcakes, burning buildings, broken bridges, death squads coming down in parachutes from blackhawks and a stunt mouse!

By planetstardragon - 12 Years Ago
it's easier and quicker than you think!! you animate layers on green in iclone then track em and finish compositing in hit film - i've spent years looking for ez buttons - i can be hollywood in very few clicks!

if you think about it, in my approach, I can get away with a lot more than you can in your path - you make high detail characters for games which has constant close ups....but in filming, i don't need to be in a constant headshot , so I can get a way with fudging a ton of detail you'd never notice under the fire and smoke to begin with...a zilla film is more silhouette, camera shake, and smoke than high detail. shading matters more than a precise mesh.

By planetstardragon - 12 Years Ago
ya - but this wasn't about how hitfilm compares to your incredible ae skills - this was about how to pull off a zilla video, fun, quick, and painless! focus grasshopper - we already know you are Mr Sw00000p Awesomeberg, Mastermind evil Genius!

By planetstardragon - 12 Years Ago
well that's the hard part, a story line - needs to feel like a scene from the movie - not just random shots. something like the scene where zilla stomped out kentucky or something!

and I wasn't trying to school you on green screening, i was pointing out that hitfilm has an ez button for it.

sweet! :w00t:

we should start a new thread then, since we just went zilla on this thread already hahaha!! -smh-

I'm thinking being we spoke about it on the forum, we can make it open to the community as well so anyone that wants to jump in ...can. can be like an iclone version of the sintel open movie project.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I will try the recommended options with UV mapping and get back if I run into any problems.

I tried it with the Mesh Medium Terrain named "Field". Now it uses two textures "Wheat & Path" I chose the "Path" texture and added an image map in the "Blend" channel of a chess board with a lot of white space around it. I did need to "re-fresh" the Planer map for it to show up and I tweaked the position too....
