I apologize in advance for asking such a basic question, but is there a way to change a characters skin and hair color in the standard version of Crazytalk Animator 2?

As long as the character has an RS tag in it's icon in the Content Manager, you should be able to.

Is color editing only offered in CTA2 pro and pipeline? I selected a character that has an RS and attempted to adjust the color in composer mode, but had no luck.

No, I don't believe so, it should be available in all versions. While in the Character Composer, open the Render Styles (left hand toolbar, 6th icon down... looks like a rectangle with a color palette under it). At the bottom right of the panel is a button with three small squares next to three longer rectangles. Click that. That should open the Group Name Selection grid. Select the body element you wish to change colors of, and change away...

I just checked the feature comparison matrix, and it looks like being able to set the render styles on groups is a feature of Pro and Pipeline. Sorry about that, I wouldn't have thought it was an "advanced" feature, but I guess it is.

The "Adjust Render Style by Color Modification for Different Body Groups" is not available in the Standard version, only Pro and Pipeline.
You can see all the feature matrix for the different versions HERE.

Most likely because RL's way of setting colors on vector characters is the absolute worst..., Render Styles with vector groupings... what a giant pain in the a**... A major complaint by many since version 1, but always falls on deaf ears...

If you are using CTA 3 Pro then you can certainly change the skin color of G2 RS characters and the overall color of G3 characters. Just press R to open Render Style, select the Skin group you want to change and then adjust the sliders accordingly.
