I just loaded iclone, then I loaded a half done 3.3 minute video project. It took 2-1/2 minutes for it to load. I loaded one additional avatar character and it took 54 seconds.
This is really totally unacceptable performance. Yes, I am running the 32bit version on my 64bit machine. I am using SAPI 5 voices I bought through RL and they will not run 64bit. Still, when I have run 64bit there has not been a noticeable difference.
I have my settings at 4x and 2048x2048, which I is probably reasonable.
We really need some solid information from iclone about ways to improve performance, and RL might want to look at code solutions from their side that improve performance.
I'm being nice, but I do realize alot of days I put off working with iclone. I just can't abide the slow response times for working with it.
The crazytalk is pretty good. I load in a voice script and work with image a bit and have a complete project done very quickly. I realize it is 2d and naturally it doesn't have as responsive an audience as iclone, but it is so much faster. It is much better on my demeanor to use 2D. Talking to myself...I guess that may be the way I should go, if RL can't help us to increase iclone performance.
Peter and the iclone support team as always been very helpful to me. I am beyond exasperation waiting on iclone content to load. Hopefully, RL won't view me as a big complainer. I hope they can see their way clear to help us all with changes in iclone efficiency or make some efforts to provide us some workarounds to help.

I could never decipher this ICLONE message : "Insufficient Disk Space on Drive C. ICLONE needs minimum 2268 MB to execute properly...( Not exact but pretty close ).." I was surprised because my drive C had more than 200GB free space !!

rampart (1/15/2014) I just loaded iclone, then I loaded a half done 3.3 minute video project. It took 2-1/2 minutes for it to load. I loaded one additional avatar character and it took 54 seconds.
Generally speaking, the duration of the project will have very little impact on the size and the loading of the project (someone please correct my if I'm wrong). By far the biggest factor should be the contents of that project. A 10-second long project with 800 props and 50 avatars will load a lot more slowly than a 10-minute clip of Chuck walking around on a terrain with one tree. QUESTION: Is it only iClone that gives you grief? Does MS Word open quickly? Is Internet Explorer quick? How about launching iClone without loading a project, is that fast too? Hmm... dumb theory... If you have a bunch of iClone project assets on a second disk (HDD), could it be running very slowly for some reason? I would love to see your Crystal Disk Mark results for all the disks in your system. Maybe we've been looking in the wrong place???

Well loading times are related to the size of the project and not so much the length in time, but they seem to have gotten longer with later versions of iClone. An empty project will load quickly enough for sure as is to be expected. It's the converting data part (or whatever it's called) that is confusing and takes a long time. What is there to convert, if it has already been saved once in the iClone version you're currently running?

"It's the converting data part (or whatever it's called) that is confusing and takes a long time. As an aside - IMO, the iC5 increased Timeline to 15 minutes is a mistake, in that it can lull an inexperienced User into happily banging-out a 15 minute Project, finding that eventually it won't Open.

To respond to your comment in the other thread, iClone definitely uses multiple cores if they are available. In my setup, both CPU and GPU are used for preview as well as rendering. In fact, I have no complaints about render speeds, but load times for projects are problematic.

As an aside - IMO, the iC5 increased Timeline to 15 minutes is a mistake, in that it can lull an inexperienced User into happily banging-out a 15 minute Project, finding that eventually it won't Open.
RL advises users to keep the projects small. It just does not tell people " how small their project should be". Is it so difficult for a programmer to warn the user that he is about to reach the project threshold while working or saving a project?
A simple message like : "YOU ARE ABOUT TO CROSS THE THRESHOLD OF YOUR PROJECT. DO NOT ADD ANY MORE OBJECTS OR SAVE TO THE YOUR PREVIOUS FILE" Could save a user much of heart burn. If the programme can't offer this message on real time, it could offer while saving incrementally. This will allow the user to decide if he must save the project further or not.
But Iclone happily saves the project of any size then merrily decides to open the project or not.
I had stopped complaining after I saw a message that the drive C has insufficient space, Iclone needs 2066 MB space to operate.....while my drive had more than 200 GB free space !
Forensically, it indicated a lot about the file and memory management issues of the programme. Earlier I had raised issues about the naming of the files in image sequence rendering and how it could create havoc in a production environment. But I never saw any acknowledgement or rectification in any of the subsequent updates. Then I realised the team needs challenges on exciting features, not basic housekeeping updates.
I had rightly percieved these issues as major "risks" while evaluating the programme. I happily watch Iclone grow from the sideline, but develop a lump in my throat when asked to recommend it for inclusion in the production pipeline. I know I can't rush Iclone. So I decided to wait and watch it grow.

What is there to convert, if it has already been saved once in the iClone version you're currently running? First - About the malware... I am so sorry. I should have taken the time to link you to a reliable site. The tool itself is clean, but some download sites are deceptive. They often have a lot of "fake download buttons" and it's hard to tell what's an advertisement, what is a link to malware, and what is the correct download button to use. Speaking of malware, not that you'll trust my recommendation right now, but Maleware Bytes is a highly regarded tool. It has a free version. (The free version runs only on demand, meaning after you've been infected, while the paid version provides continuous, proactive protection. I run the free version anytime I suspect I went to a bad place.) You can get it directly from their web site: Malwarebytes.org ABOUT THE DISK SPEED RESULTS: I translated the numbers into "how many times faster your SSD is than your HDD": | 3.3x | 2.2x | | 5.7x | 2.0x | | 37.9x | 32.9x | | 39.8x | 58.6x |
A very short description of the numbers are: - Sequential read/write - This is similar to reading/writing a nice large file on a freshly defragmented disk
- Random read/write 512KB - I think this is similar to working with a large, but somewhat fragmented file
- The last two rows row simulate working with lots of small files, and you can see the stunning difference in your two drives... nearly sixty times faster on one measurement.
In the very best scenario, your HDD is still only half as fast as your SSD. So whatever problems you're having with iClone, it would only be worse without your SSD. MORE ANALYSIS: Both your SSD and HDD values seem somewhat on the low end to me, but not horribly bad. I have one HDD that gets values similar to yours, but I have newer ones (3TB) that are much faster (though still way below my SSD). My SSD is faster than yours, overall, but you win on the random write (4k). It's hard to find any SSD that wins on all the benchmarks, so it's always a tradeoff (but for consumers it is splitting hairs, but if you're running a large database or hosting a website then you'd need to shop more carefully). BOTTOM LINE: I do not believe your slow load times is caused by your disk drives, and most certainly not caused by your SSD (which is 2x to 58x faster). For the performance problems, we need to look elsewhere (very likely at iClone itself, based on comments by others). But I can understand your frustration with the 128GB SSD filling up too quickly.

I don't blame you for the malware. I used the same malware tool you mentioned and it cleaned up very quickly. I am spoiled using Mozilla in lieu of Explorer. Not having a browser that is not part of the OS is a real value. In other words I rarely run a background virus scanner. I am consistent about the sites I visit as a rule. I just wasn't paying attention.
Thanks for evaluating the drives.

I did a follow up on load time.
I loaded a room with some furniture, no avatars, no changes in the props, 105KB.
iclone took just over 1 minute to load it.
So, how low do you go on file size and get good load times.
I don't see how you can produce any video at 105KB

Over a minute to load that simple project? I'll have to check my results at home, but it sounds long to me. Late last night, I remembered a conversation about loading an "environment" (I can't recall the exact term) and how there was a large difference in how it was handled versus another option. I know I'm being very vague, sorry. I think it was like if you had a terrain with houses and trees and stuff, and you saved it as a single entity, then it loaded differently (slower, and/or more memory usage) than if you did it in pieces. Does that sound familiar to anyone? But since you made your itty-bitty test case, I guess that probably doesn't apply.

Just for the record, here are some technical notes from my side about this sentence:
"Random read/write 512KB - I think this is similar to working with a large, but somewhat fragmented file"
Not really/necessarily: it mostly depends on the solutions adopted for the data management. For example, in the case of SSD, the wear levelling and ECC management algorithms will create a lot of additional data structures that might requires additional random readings of the disk, independently from the fact that a disk is or is not fragmented. Therefore, how many random vs. sequential operations depends on the effectiveness of the implemented algorithms.

You might have a point, but most people that are into iclone really aren't a bunch of dummies about keeping their systems in top shape, and as current as possible.
Maybe, if you had some good data to share on this?

My project that takes 2-1/2 minutes to load has no terrain, only props, a sky, a 2d panoramic city view, 3 characters with voices, 4 cameras and 9 lowpoly "apparition characters". This is current situation. I have several more scenes to build as well to complete the project. Those scenes will include all new props, some cameras, and a few characters that have voices, and some lowpoly characters as well. Those scenes will extend about six minutes so, I'm thinking how will I ever survive it. :w00t:
If terrain is a big load problem, which I would suspect it could be with all the polys and textures. Load times could be worse.
I am thinking there may be a an optimum size for best load times in iclone. My 3.3 minute video may be too far above that size. It may mean breaking down videos into smaller increments, while creating the video. Consolidation of all the scenes and pull them into the larger completed video using Sony Vegas Pro or other more accommodating software for final rendering. I always end up with Vegas Pro anyway, because it is easier to add sound bits, and music when the timeline tracks are easier to use.
Now my project has progress into a 3.3 minute video with 3 scenes now using 3 actors for all the talking parts. I mean how far down do you take it. I would think this was a very small video.
Effectively, when I continue to load and re-load the same project over and over again I shouldn't have to continue to have 2-1/2 minute load times. At some point there should be caching or something of the project components within iclone. If the bit we see in the progress load popup is real...why would data have to be converted that is being used again and again.
Computers are designed for doing redundant tasks, that is a principal ability. If data in iclone is being converted over and over then the accommodation of redundancy is not be properly applied.

What about the little popup messages that say the program is being closed and there is nothing you can do about it.
I have to save everytime I make any changes, because I fear losing the changes. Then of course I don't even get to that point sometimes.
I've gotten that sweet little message 3 times this morning and one time I actually beat iclone to it and saved. Twice I lost everything I had changed. I hate to make one simple change and save, because this project is taking 2-1/2 minutes to reload. When I finally took on a project that could extend for about 10 minutes..it is a nightmare and 18 hour day. Heck, when I do sleep I'm doing iclone. Maybe, RL should give us some kind of pre-cursor comment popup or something that says you are about to lose your lunch...eat fast. :P

FWIW & ignore that I'm a "Z Team" Editor ;) 1) Turn Off Windows Indexing Service 2) Windows OS System Restore can be a life saver, however it can eat-up OS SSD space if you have too many Restore points. Deleting old ones could help. 3) Check Windows Automatic Scheduled Tasks & select manual, instead. 4) Disable Programs' Automatic Updaters. Select Manual instead. That includes Windows Automatic Updates 5) Check Task Manager Processes for All Users. Stop those that you can easily identify. 6) I've never used Free Program; Enditall, however that can automatically end all Processes not needed by Windows OS basic functionality. But it needs to be very carefully configured. 7) I use Diskeeper De-Fragmenter Program that over-rides Windows OS De-Fragmenter. it Defragments on the fly when your HDD is "Idle". However, you have an SSD 8) I use Window Washer & jvcPowerTools Programs that clean-up a number of Temporary Files generated by Windows, Internet Explorer etc & obsolete Registrty entries etc. All on a daily basis. 9) If your iClone Camera(s) don't see Objects, exclude them. 10) I use W7 Free Microsoft Security Essentials, which is all you need for maximum PC protection. Programs such as Norton & McAfee have a large footprint. 11) I don't do incremental saves, since there would be far too many with my particular Workflow. But I do Save every few minutes. 12) I have Acronis TrueImage Backup Program. W7 OS has a Free one. I do a System Disk Image Backup after a day's iClone Editing. 13) I do Windows OS & my OS HDD Error Checks weekly. 14) Delete iClone Temporary (Render) File IMO, an hour or-so spent a week in keeping a clean & healthy PC, reaps dividends re; Video Editing, per se.

prabhatM (1/15/2014) ...//... "Insufficient Disk Space on Drive C. ICLONE needs minimum 2268 MB to execute ...//...My experience with this error message came from having about 16 avatars on set (NOT low poly but G5's) and even though I could work on sets ten times that size as I built them up, saving them and trying to reopen them again later.... was a no-go. However, deleting the avatars from set and saving / reloading after that, everything was fine. I can only assume that as windows opens the file, or iClone, which ever way you want to view it, memory managers come into play. Because sometimes when I waited with that ceasing message window open, and then cancelled it iclone would continue to open the file then that warning window came up again. Then Id wait. Then cancel it yet again and sometimes, just sometimes, the file would finally open.
Memory management. It swallows up all the ram, windows swapfiles and plays with virtual memory but IClone doesn't give it enough time to do this. Either on the system or the Graphics card. Deleting the avatars from set en masse made the file open every time despite its size. I don't know why that is, I don't care. It works and its a workaround for me. Someone else might be able to see why this is so. Just for future reference on complex and large sets save your avatars in one folder and the set in another. Here, this works every time. It doesn't slow loading times adding avatars and props etc ......... but............. it allows slow progress & development of the scene. And slow progress is better than none. Armstrong.

Very good response.
Constructive workarounds as solutions are really more of what we need. One thing you reminded me of, which got lost in my mental processes.
I am going to remove every avatar from scenes that I don't require to make a scene. I will use low poly avatars as I mentioned in another thread. Those low poly avatars produced by Alley/Apparition are full out functional avatars at 1/3 the poly count. Naw, you cannot change their clothes. You can change their faces and it makes a hit against the poly count, but still far less than all out G5 avatars do.
Yes, those avatars are needed for the immersion of the viewer in the events unfolding. However, I'm going to save them out. Then when I get the old dog running right I will inject them as needed and I mean 'as needed'.
It needs to be said, "we need to minimize until we get the core and scenes done". Then we can poke in the ancillary stuff that builds the scenes out.
I had 3 crashes with iclone this morning and got only one changes to save. It was just demoralizing, because I got some serious things done that had been a problem. Now, I have to brace up and get back to it. :D
You mentioned one thing I basically have done, just a bit different.
I build my scenes separately, and attach in tiers. This way completely build the scenes before I add avatars, cameras, lights or anything else. Seriously, I build each scene just like I want it for final use. Yes, I have to attach and detach, work with props alot. I effectively have complete sets that I can load. Some scenes are big and require other sub-groups of props. Each set basically has a CORE, then SUBGROUPS of props are added. Mostly, I build the subgroups just under the CORE, then when I load them they are properly placed in the core scene. I may have one CORE scene, and a half dozen subgroups of props that I can poke into the CORE scene.
The last paragraph may need a bit more explanation... First I build the CORE PROPS SET/BASIC SCENE for all scenes
2nd I build individual SUBGROUP SET/S with component props attached to this SUBGROUP SET and saved as a SUBGROUP SET.
3rd load in my CORE PROPS SET/BASIC SCENE and the load in the SUBGROUP SET or SETS as needed to build out the full scene.
I may have a half dozen of the SUBGROUP SETS. As I apply each to the CORE PROPS SET I attach one or more of the SUBGROUP SETS and save. It is actually a CORE PROPS SET all prepared for the events to be staged with SUBGROUP SETS.
I may build as many of these CORE/SUBGROUP arrangements as I need for working scenes in the project.
CORE-s1s2s3 - I may use other naming convention to jog my memory Subgroup 1 Subgroup 2 Subgroup 3
CORE-s3s4 Subgroup 3 Subgroup 4
I don't try to build one big CORE SET and apply all the subgroups to it. This can be a memory hog that is very cumbersome to work.
I have one project with one CORE - and 8 possible combinations of that core with SUBGROUPS.
I use the terminology CORE SET/SUBGROUP/PROP - this works very well for me.
When the CORE SET and SUBGROUPS are completed I then:
Create my project file, introduce avatars and load in audio files with avatar facial animation. I do it this way, because I have to get the lipsync right or nothing looks right, if I don't. The project file requires the CORE and subgroup scenes I need as well. I have to place place the avatars properly to get the flow of the project. Yes, I do have to introduce some motions at this point.
This is when the long load times and crashes really kick in. This project file can really grow and the bigger it gets the slower it loads. Then I start applying cameras, constraints, refine motions, lighting, etc.
Maybe, there is a way to build the avatars and their associated lipsync timelines separate. I wouldn't know how to do that. I think if we could do this it would make building projects easier as far as load times, and crashes. I would love to build the avatar facial animations like this. Often, I have to make facial texture changes. Everything I could do independently outside of working in the full project interests me.
From now there is one thing I can do, which I think should be written in stone.(for me) I believe best practice for me will be to use low poly avatars as much as possible from start to finish.
I planned to provide a link to the Alley/Apparition avatars, but couldn't find one. Go to the marketplace and enter low poly in the search box is how I find them.

No, 'didn't miss it. Hence my reply targeted memory mismanagement.
Waiting with one of the three, yes thats 3, riddiculous incorrect iClone warning windows open seemed to give windows more time to organise itself. One such warning say somthing along the lines of, "You need "X" amount of memory to open this project, else it will not run at optimum performance speeds" or similar. I'd then cancel the window warning after a pause and iclone would continue to load. I dont know why. I have already made a post on this issue. I dont care why, sometimes it works and the project opens but
I never save avatars inside projects anymore.
Thats the bottom line. Since then, I do NOT get those trio irritance warning windows.:cool::cool::cool:

I never save avatars inside projects anymore.
I must be really missing something, because I don't know how you build out your projects without including avatars into projects. Is there a way to save them out including lipsync voice files like you can sets and then poke them into your final project files? I could see leaving off the motions, and constraints if you could just save out the avatars and their voice files and then poke them into you projects when needed.
I found this. Is this what you are talking about.
I have the non-pipeline version of 3DXchange. If this is what you are talking about I am not sure 3DXchange will create an export file if I don't have pipeline.
http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/help/3DXchange5/Pipeline/09_MotionPlus/Exporting_Expressions_to_3D_Tools.htm
Good News... I removed 5 regular G5 avatars and 6 low poly avatars, then added back 2 low poly avatars in my project. There were minimal motions on the 5 regular avatars and no sound files, the 6 low poly were just window dressing and I planned to add modest idle motions later.
The project is now loading in....45 seconds instead of 2-1/2 minutes. Does this make any sense?
------------------------------------------------------
It is so strange how we can miss things that are often so obvious to others.
All I needed to do was think outside the box a bit and Voila!
I mentioned above I wanted to save the avatar with the Visme - sound file only.
Doing that is just a few steps, but even better I can do other actions as well and save them into a motionplus file that I can specifically identify.
These are links to good explanations, but they may not be as clear to some readers. Below are some thoughts on using these features.
http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/iclone_whatsnew_v55.aspx
http://www.reallusion.com/iclone/help/iclone5/PRO/default.asp?page=09_MotionPlus/What_is_MotionPlus.htm
1. Load in avatar #1 2. Go facial animation, Import the sound file. As the file is loading on import the iclone builds the lipsync with the avatar #1. 3. Then you can work with the sound and the avatar #1 in the timeline. You can load other avatar characters #2 and #3, etc. with their motionplus files and synchronize your avatar actors into the project. Then save the motionplus file from the timeline of avatar#1. 4. Using naming conventions for the motion plus file and the avatar #1 that you can tie together in projects. 5. This way the avatar#1 is always a separate entity or file, and the motion plus is as well. 6. You can then delete the avatar and save the project. This way you can actually keep what I would call a core project file. A project file that has everthing you need for your scenes with no avatars included, or some avatars. This would depend on your project load times and prevention of crashes caused by memory problems. 7. When you load avatars it would be best to have a very precise placement of the avatar to assure your motions and such will provide the action where you want it, especially when reacting with other avatar characters and props. 8. This may seem like extra work, but as projects grow and memory management becomes a problem this could be a very good solution to prevent crashes and slow project load times. 9. When you get down to the final project and all the components needed for the scene are in the project the load time could be a problem. If this is too big a problem it would be best to break the timeline for smaller scenes and use more than one project file.
-------------------------
The solution above is probably a good way to go anyway, because you have a separate avatar and a separate motionplus file. You don't have to maintain a separate avatar for use with the motionplus file, you can just use your regular avatar and then load in the separate motion plus you plan to use with it. I would just suggest to be careful in your file naming to keep track of what you are doing. :P
----------------------------
Originally, I was thinking of saving just the sound file with the avatar and then being able to access as one file, which I think is possible. Since 3DXchange does have ability to embed motionplus file with the avatar and export to other programs. However, if you don't have the pipeline addition of 3DXchange I don't think it is possible to conjoin the avatar and motionplus file and save back for use in iclone.
