How can I modify clothes?

Hi,
I moved this post as I changed the topic in my other thread. :hehe:

Now for my next question, (and if I should start as a new post let me know), can I modify the clothes more than just the textures and colors? Lets say I want to make bell bottoms from a straight leg template. Can that be done? Are there some constraints that must be followed for proper results?

You can't change the shape of a CloneCloth template in iClone, which is why there are templates with different shapes. What you can do, given a specific template shape, is to hide certain parts with Opacity maps. This allows you to determine the length of a skirt or dress, or whether a garment has long sleeves, short sleeves, or no sleeves, for example.

BTW, it would be better to start a new topic for a new question to make it easier for others that have similar questions to find answers--that's what we strive for, at least...:unsure:


Ok, that sounds good enough to get me going. If I start with a template large enough I can basically mask out the stuff I don't want to see. That may work.

If you have 3DXchange, you can save any cloth part as an OBJ file. This can be edited to a limited degree in any 3D software that reads OBJ. You cannot add or remove any polygons, but you could move the vertices of your pant legs to create bell bottoms. 3DXchange can re-import this modified OBJ, and maintain the rigging as it originally was. Because the rigging does not change, do not go to crazy with moving the vertices around.

I occasionally modify clothing this way, and will eventually get a bit of tutorial up. I'm recovering from a crash, so have lost the bits I modified before.


That is good info, can't wait for the tutorial. :D I don't really need "bell-bottoms" right now as that was an example. I just needed to know it can be done as I definitely need to mod some outfits. The only 3D app I have limited experience with is Blender and some days are better than others using it. It seems like they need an interface that is a little more standard and user friendly or more normal like other apps. (just my opinion of course). It seems when I use Blender I find if I hit the wrong button I can never get back to where I was without starting over. :w00t:

Alley is the Forum's Expert.

I think it's you who has anther Thread re; Clone Cloth for G3 Characters, with Alley's Reply ?.

IMO, you can't turn a straight-leg Male Lower Clone Cloth into a bell-bottom, since the straight-leg is just that. Ie; not enough cloth.

You need the relevant Male Clone Cloth Lower to add a Bell-bottom Texture on top. Probably Boot Cut?

Alley Linked to the relevant Tuts in her reply. You need to watch the 2nd one, re cutting-out parts of Clone Cloth Uppers & Lowers, to design your own outfits. You can't add to Clone Cloth. Only Cut-out parts. It requires a lot of practise, before you get it right.

ADDED - OK - It wasn't you I was thinking of. I'll try & find the relevant Thread..

In short - You need to Purchase the Relevant Clone Cloths for applying Textures (Clothes) to.

There are various options. Forum Product Developer Alley is the best person for giving the best advice, according to your requirements.

Thanks Colour. That helps. I am still quite new at this and have to figure out what prerequisites are needed before purchasing cloths etc so I don't get carried away on the spending by accident. :P After a lot of looking I can see where much research should be done as there is a ton of stuff that can be purchased, but some is best purchased in a bundle where so is not. I like to be able to at least customize, if not create, my models appearance. Although you thought it was me in the post about the clone cloths, I did see that post and did watch video 1 of the 2 but will watch that one today. Alley looks like a pro for sure. :)

On my productions I usally can only afford what I absolutely need. I have never purchased, as an example, the G3 clothing pack. I usually just pick the mesh I need for the outfit I want and purchase it separately. It costs me more in the long run if I end up purchasing the entire pack as separate items, but I have never actually done that. It bends my budget less at the point of production if I buy separately however. ;) (Packs are great items as birthday or Christmas gifts if your family supports your movie making endeavors. :D )

I could, and would, buy nearly every item in the reallusion store and the marketplace if I was financially able, so this approach controls my natural tendency to purchase something just because it looks cool. :P

Pete,
How do you buy just the "mesh"? Is it in the content store or the market place? I would like to buy things I really need and make them, or use 3DXchange to import the items once I figure out how to use it. :P I am having fun just learning the ropes so far but can see things I want/need for my ideas already.

edit: I guess a clone cloth is actually a mesh so I may need to do a quick study on all the terminology so i know, or think I know what I am talking about. :D
