I would really love a spherical 360 degree rendering camera in iClone! I use one a lot in Carrara to create wrap around backgrounds to save rendertimes. I also use those backgrounds, which are often animated. in iClone on the sky prop. I love to do it in iClone too., esp with iClone trees and the new heightmapped terrains, one could paint many trees around the perimeter animated and have birds, clouds particles etc that would bog down an already complex scene then use it as a video background on the sky prop with even more foreground objects. I also use a dome and circular plane I have uv mapped to take spherical renders. I know there are also various products in store that will load 360 panorama images and videos.

I agree. I make 360 deg images in Vue that I use in iClone. It would be nice to work the other way around, also.

Thanks for the suggestion Wendy. We will consider this for a future upgrade or version. :)

Hey, have you guys made any progress on the 360 spherical camera? IS there a way to mimic that equirectangualr effect?

Yes Yes Yes Yes!!!!
This is would be incredibly useful for creating animated reflections, (and still reflections) for prop surfaces.

Try putting a 360 spinning Box in the World Center (or anywhere else for that matter).. Perfect Rotation 0-179-358-0 <--- That is FOUR Key Positions along the timeline. Link your Camera to it, and you have a 360 Camera that can be adjusted for speed or even position along the timeline with keys that will get created for the Camera by the position of the BOX. I suggest a Box because it is easy to see it spin, whereas a Ball is not. Any object that can be turned (that being just about any prop you like) can have the camera linked to it. I just did one with less than 2 minutes time involved. The only thing you have to save is the BOX.. any camera can use it as a control for Rotation. If you want to travel around the outer edges of a scene for shots... use a path and the camera will link and follow it. Using a Path, A ball can travel 100% or more along that path and the Camera can be set to "LOOK AT" that ball.
There are many ways to do this..

But is there a way to ensure your images render like this? Is there a step by step tutorial on making a path that does a spherical equirectangular 360 image?

Virtual reality is around the corner, folks. Let's get that 360° camera pronto. Kids are now watching 3D real world camera footage online, using their smart phone, so as they move their phone, their view of the footage changes accordingly. And all the software (um, Youtube) needs to make this work, is footage rendered in the format shown in the image above.
With iClone, we are creating stories in a 3D generated world. Perfect for this new technology.

By the way, this isn't 360° as if turning the camera on the Z axis. This is 360° by 360° degrees. A "spherical view camera" might be the best way to describe it.

LOL well I am asking because I was contacted to do a Virtual Reality animation and none of the software I use supports it--I don't know how to use, or have the money for, Maya or Carrara or anything else that already has a spherical camera on board, so I am desperate to figure out how to make this happen...they want equirectangular images for the Occulus Rift

Wendy you are always the wo-man with the plan! Thankfully, they are a laid back company and allowing me to work out kinks as I figure this out.

The widest angle camera in iClone is 12mm focal length with, we can assume, a virtual 24 by 36 sensor (standard 35mm). So, at 12mm, you get 112.6 degrees horizontal, and 90 degrees vertical. Not going to work. :( Stitching videos together is out, because the result would not be equirectangular, but some weird multi-distorted image. It really has to be a full 360, or two 180s in vertical orientation to capture the image correctly.

Doh!
I know Indigo has a spherical, but it costs like 400 bucks to upgrade, as they only have it on their Renderer and not RT...I was told LUX has a spherical...may look into that. Thanks as per usual guys ...

Well, would really be nice to have a "at the touch of a button" solution for that in iClone. When Bryce can do it, why shouldn´t iClone do it as well?! ;)

A 360° Spherical Camera would be very useful for creating environment maps from the iClone scene for using as reflections... including ANIMATED environment maps to show the reflection of an object or avatar moving by, and to show the reflection of the environment on a moving object like a car. :D
