What feaures do you expect? Other than including a Mac version for the new release, we are working on impactful features that have never been introduced to the 2D animation industry before. We can't tell you much, but here are some hints: Leave your comment and tell us how you think about these coming updates and what your expectation is!

Hi Bruce! These new possibilities of animation doesn't make sense as long as you can't create new characters more easily. It takes a lot of work to create new sprite based characters (with vector graphics, not pixel graphics). You should imporove the process of creating vector based characters. Okay, the new possibilities of animation are good, if they really work. If! Luna

I would love to see mocap, auto motion and ik editing for crazy talk animator pro, i hav epurchased iclone, crazy talk 7 pro and crazy talk animator pro in an effort to utilise all these features, to have them all in one package would be the perfect solution, keep me updated on when it is available

Personally, I could care less about motion capture for 2D animation. The different angles of characters is a good thing, assuming it's implemented well. But I agree with Luna, until I can actually create my own characters easily and with little fuss, CTA remains on the shelf, barely used. Oh, and independent flipping of body parts, such as letting me flip the head horizontally as if the character is looking both ways. And letting me keyframe the eye position. Puppeteering is a gimmick feature, and isn't all that useful in a traditional animations. I want to actually control where my character is looking with keyframes.

MOCap is not what I missing in CTA, but cool things, are multiple angles and auto motion.
I wished me we get a option for create optional own bones or quadruped composer. Maybe a Image atlas or layer function for timesaving importing several sprites at once
In any case, I look forward !

So far it looks promising but I hope RL reads thru the "Wishful Features" list again for there are many features listed there that would be good to have as well as fixes for age old problems and addressing other deficiencies noted.
MOCAP might work ok but that will remain to be seen and isn't on the top of my wish list.
Yes, individual body part flipping and true keyframing for each body part would be wonderful and I hope that will be included but, I too put at the top of the wish list easier sprite character creation and with custom bone rigging and sprite morphing.
I would also like to see: * object collision * physics * 3D object support

Is there an ETA for fixing these "age old problems"? Many consumers believe it's best to fix known problems with updates (why no updates since 8/11?) rather than up-sell a new version. Sigh. Is there a general release date set?

I love the new features, especially mo cap.Maybe the only suggestion would be a cell shading feature like iclone and a better way for the joints to connect or blur when the character moves.
The bad thing is we have to wait until late 2013, when there has not been an update or upgrade for a very very long time.
Good CTA is finally getting some love.

I totally agree with hopes of better custom character imports and rigging. Bringing in your own characters is difficult and extremely tedious. If they could make is easier and quicker to get them into the program, CTA would be so much more accessible to custom character creators. Please work on that for the next release!

Well I bought CTA some time ago and I have to say I was a bit disapointed... The software is in development yet, but have good potencial I'm sure The new features look promising , mocap is a feature that the competitors don't have... You guys should improve the way you build characters and look especialy to the joints... Animestudio 9 have a killer feature to this, easy to setup. Audio playing in timeline while dragging the mouse is important for lipsync , for Iclone this is missed either.

Question is will the add on characters and motions which i purchased as add-ons and from the market place ( upto 350 extra $ apart from original cost of stock software) be compatible with the upgrade? If no, Reallusion can count a customer lost. 500+$ each year for a software which does not even allow users to create own characters.. naah.. I think hundreds of people have said before that before bringing all fancy stuff like mo-cap, cta needs to get a way to allow user the freedom to create his own characters.

Though I have not evaluated CTA seriously, I always thought CTA provided a Body Part / Bone Template and you could REPLACE any or most of the Body Parts with your own Drawing / Sprite. After that one could apply standard Motions and expressions.
Isn't the process good enough for creating your own Character?
|
By Panzerkampfwagen - 11 Years Ago

It probably is, but we are not talking about a 10 or 20$ app, add-ons included , this software costs not less than 300 $. The question is after paying 300+$, is it worth to go through so much hassle?
|
By AverageJoe - 11 Years Ago
|
No, the process as it is right now is extremely tedious and prone to all sorts of issues. There are some who are successfully doing it, but not many because it's not intuitive at all and is very lengthy and time consuming. It usually requires a great deal of tweaking, resizing, repositioning for each piece, and each piece themselves must be done individually. Custom character creation is one of the biggest lacks in the software right now.
|
By vidi - 11 Years Ago
|
...Compared to creating a 3D character but a breeze
|
By AverageJoe - 11 Years Ago
|
Not necessarily. I can create a whole slew of characters in DAZ, and have each one looking unique. Ranging in age, size, gender, race, and even species. All without having to know 3D. And use them in practically any 3D animation software as well. I don't have to import each piece of their anatomy seperately, I do not have to reposition it, resize it, repin it it in any way. So no, 3D is not necessarily harder.
I'll reiterate. Creating custom characters in CTA is not impossible, but you have to admit is is an extrememly manual and tedious process, and there could most certainly be improvements made that would allow everyone to create new characters instead of the very hardcore creators.
|
By vidi - 11 Years Ago
|
Of course I speak for a own character design not Play and mix DAZ.morphs . If you realy make a unique figure from scratch, so it easier to rig it in CTA as in 3D.
Also what about is if I like special funny toon? Also you must extra pay for all these morph and it is never your own mesh. For a 3DPurist like me is DAZ not a Option.
But I want not start a debate but only mention that realy own 3D character design requires more work

I can not stress how important character creation tools are.
As I complete my on going film, I have several more projects in development. One of which I am waiting for Version 2 of the software before proceeding. I am hoping Version 2 will be a step in the right direction.
To Crazy talk animator team, if you have any questions of one some who uses this software everyday may have the answers to, please feel free to message me. Further development of this software would be fantastic

Because people do not move in 2D, they move in 3D and trying to map 3D to 2D just never works out very well. It's gonna require more cleanup and tweaking than if I just did it myself. And based on some of the results in the iCLone 3D mocap (i.e. terrible results) it doesn;t seem worth it to me at all.

It all sounds great. However, two things that would make my life so much easier are missing. First, the ability to widen the time line I am using. I just want to be able to look away and when I look back, instantly recognize the animation line I am editing. As it is, all the lines look the same. It is also more comfortable to work on a wider line. I widen the working line when I am editing music on my music editor (Magix) and when I am editing movies in my movie editor (MAGIX). Why not have this feature in the animation editor. Another feature desperately needed is to set the origin or linking point when using several animation sequences. Currently, when you sit a character and add a motion, some characters just shift their positions.
|

Yeah I agree, the timeline needs work and bigger would be better. Also would like the play head to stay put when clicking the timeline. Always throws things off when the play head jumps.
Perhaps color code things to make referencing easier at a glance.

CTA has a huge potential to make the tedious task of character animation fun and intuitive. What I'd like to see: 1. Better dedicated character rigging setup area, with support for quadruplets and custom rigs. 2. Better, more accurate auto lip-synch, or lip-synch auto cleanup option Currently you get a lot of mouth shape animation even if the audio amplitude is zero. It requires a lot of manual cleanup. That shouldn't happen. When the audio is at zero amplitude on the timeline, the mouth resting position should kick in and nothing else. 3. Better and bigger timeline, or option to enlarge it. Make it a joy to work with (the current one is no fun). 4. Bouncy transforms. The option to apply a spring effect to limps so that they bounce back and forth until reaching the resting position. 5. Full body IK (such as in Autodesk Motionbuilder). 6. Camera with depth of field. Out of focus areas are blurred. 7. Motion blur option. 8. Live feature Make CTA suitable for live performance (live puppeteering) Lip-synch is generated live and motion is triggered with shortcuts or input devices, including mo-cap. The performance can be used for live interaction with an audience. (Similar to what is possible with Autodesk Motionbuilder).

Whinge. Whinge. Whinge. I can't believe the negative posts in here. Nothing constructive. Just whinging. How about a bit of positive feedback for the fact that the developer is trying to expand its product and make improvements instead of complaining because you can't figure out how to make a custom vector character. Instead of whining about it in here, your time would be better spent experimenting with the software. Awesome product by the way.

Nope he is pretty much right. There are a lot of whiners on this forum. Most of which are people that just assume software that make things 'easier' are also suppose to do everything for them. That is the biggest problem these types of companies face when creating software for the masses. The 'non animator' has the slightest clue as to what goes into animation. Best practices, and even with CTA fault still makes it a lot easier and less frustrating than doing it traditionally.
People get a taste of something and then want the world and for free. It is baffling how entitled people can be.
Yes there are things that would make the product better but not for the masses.... for you. Everyone has their own vision as to what they need so they mistake that for a feature that should be included. NOW.
You get what you get. The developers can not move mountains, some things are harder to implement than others. If you want to have all of the freedoms, features, etc in the world. Do it the old fashioned way.
I have lurked on this forums a lot and it truly is just 'less than amateurs' whining that there is no 'Make everything that I can dream of now' button.
You see this on any software with 'easily create' in the title.
It does not matter how 'easy' the software is. It will not be able to create the content for you. People need to get over themselves.

Its funny how much of that goes on. They say people shouldn't complain but then go on and on complaining about them, not every realizing they are doing exactly what they claim to condemn. I have found through observation that people who fall into this category usually have a very low post number associated with their avatar.

Compared to what other 2D animation applications offer in terms of functionality, some much cheaper than CTA, it's quite understandable why people make feature requests. As you said it's quite common for any software company that has a forum to take feature requests from users. But for someone who's never even used the program and start blasting these requests, calling everyone whiners is completely unjustified, and completely insulting. So people want a "make it all button". You're right, people do want this. And those people probably are whiners. But if you take the time and read most of the well written and well thought out feature requests here, you'll see some damn good requests. Not whines.

Hi, please improve the character creation: As an idea how it could be: One single page. On the left side boxes to throw in the required body parts, on the right side an animated preview of the character. So you can see at once what you have done good, or which body parts need some enhancement.
Another really needed feature: Please let us create custom bone settings easily.
Oh, and my personal killer feature (just in case you are wondering what you can do, what Smith Micro will never be able to do ):
Import iClone avatars and props: Imagine the following: You'd like an animated horse in CTA, you have iClone horse and pack theme. So you import a horse. The import will let you see the horse from fixed angles. Ongoing, CTA should let you reshape the form. E.g make the back look more funny or simplify the head. Reshape in CTA, recoloring in your favourite photo editor. One big png file with all the different views, ready to be opened in photoshop and reimported in CTA. Afterwards, CTA should help you to simplify the bones. Let some out, enlarge other bones, perhaps create a few new (perhaps to make a more funny tail, or to have more movement with the ears) Then, CTA could import horse motions. And do the same with these. Simplify them. For you have just simlified the horse bones, make the same with the motions.
I don't know if you do understand this, and I don't know if there is even only one person on earth sharing my thoughts. But imho, this would be an outstanding featuro no other 2D animation program can copy, so it's giving CTA really outstanding features.

Wow! You guys have a lot of great suggestions...some of which are difficult for me to understand because of your technical jargon.
This has probably been addressed already, but
I'd like to see it made easier creating characters from photos whose bodies move like the stock characters.
I envision that when you create a character you are given the option to create a side pose for the character at the same time. That way the character you create can move from front to side poses much more like the way humans actually move.
Now, when you extend the beginning of a puppet clip so that two body motions blend together better the switch from the front to a side pose causes a painfully unnatural twist of the left-foot before it 'snaps' into the new position.
I created a special video for support illustrating what I meant:
http://youtu.be/Pvr-ERzDF_U
Seems to me it would be better to make the character 'morph' into the new position rather than 'snap' into it.
I would see that as a great improvement!
I'm hoping all your suggestions will be taken into consideration because it sounds to me like you guys are 'right on' with what you want in CTA 2

Glad to hear CTA 2 is coming soon!
here are some suggestions that I thought about while using CTA 1:
1- Audio while scrubbing 2- ability to draw in CTA thus it will be a one stop platform (that would be perfect ) 3- ability to import layers from Illustrator or Photoshop (that would save a lot of time) 4- the addition of bone rigging system 5- the ability to change the depth of a charachte's layers (ex: hands in front of the table while the body is behind the table) 5- the ability to introduce an object between the layer of the character, ex: holding a cup or a cell phone 6- I know this is quite advance but ease in and out of a key frame 7- an option to blur a layer 8- ability to skew an object 9- EQ: to add telephone or echo sound effects on a voice for example
Thank you.

I suggest an absolutely fantastic and easy to use and learn from manual for CTA 2 that is so informative those familiar with CTA won't need to ask any new questions at all because the new features tutorials answer any and every question we might think to ask.
I liked the fact that CT7 was very intuitive. You could figure things out much easier on your own. CTA is a bear by comparison. It's not very intuitive. You have to ask a lot more questions to figure out how to do things.
It would be nice if all the tools were easily found, like in CT7, and CTA 2 is much more intuitive and easy to figure out on your own, like CT7

I hope the lip synch for sprite animation will be improved in the next version. What I would like to see: 1. Audio scrubbing 2. Loop region 3. clean up pass (set all keyframes with zero audio amplitude to default pose) 4. Settings/options for auto lip synch, such as resolution, where you have the option to have keyframes just every other, or every third or fourth frame. The reason is, that very often the lip synch looks too busy and is flickering due to too many keyframes, so I am cleaning up the keyframes by deleting lots of them, which is very time consuming.

I love cta. I've used it on some of my animation projects. One feature that I always enjoyed was the face fitting ala "projection mapping" effect. This was by far the most useful feature of the program. It made face creation a fun and quick process. It would be super awesome if that could be expanded to some other parts of the character body. Or being able to map arms or legs (the motion would be very limited of course) but it would be great help to those who do motion comics or need limited animation for their still images. Not sure if its even possible but I thought I throw it out there since the camera mapping effect is kind of the staple of ct and cta.

I'm not sure I understand... one of the staples of CTA is to use a photograph to create an animatible character using the photo fitting process, so what you're asking for is already there...

Not really. Are you familiar with a camera mapping process tht most 3d prigrams do? The face fitting procedure of crazy talk is done in a very similar process of projecting a 2d image onto 3d geometry. That is why a mapped 2d face can be manipulated in all three axis albeit limited in range of motion because only so much of the 2d image can be mapped on the 3d object. The rest of the character fitting procedure is a standard 2d 2axis bone rigging. That is different from the facial 3d mapping procedure. What I am suggesting is doing 3d mapping for other limbs or even a full body. This would be limited to small motions but the whole character could move just like the face in limited 3d. Great for depth of 2d images. Hec even being able to map static 3d objects would really give life to a static 2d image. The face fitting procedure is literally a camera mapping technique that is why I am suggesting an expansion of it if possible to the rest of the body and stage. Hope that explains it better.

Wouldn't you just use 3D then? I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying I don't quite get the need for it. I think the biggest drawback to this process within CTA specifically, is because the limbs are broken up into seperate segments, they don't morph. Mapping an arm would be challenging because you'd have to map the upper arm seperately from the lower arm.

It was a suggestion. Using 3d programs for mapping, like the facial mapping CTA does, takes a ton of time. They managed to resolve the 3d issue with the most complicated part of the body. I just thought that getting a few camera mapping techniques into CTA might not be a bad idea, and they have already dabbled with it (the head) hence my suggestion.

Hi,
It would also be great if the scroll bar acts like all other programs, so far it goes to a really far point in the timeline if I click somewhere in the scroll bar instead of scrolling like other programs.
Thanks
