Hey Everyone!

The impending release of the 3DXchange 5 Pipeline version is approaching, and we'd just like to provide you with a little bit of information regarding this amazing new tool for iClone users.  The most important change is that iClone users will now be able to export any iClone content that has been marked as export-ready into industry standard FBX and BVH formats.  Reallusion will be progressively releasing more and more iClone content with an Export License purchase option.  Users who purchase content with an Export License will be able to convert that content via the 3DXchange5 pipeline into FBX and BVH formats, which allows them to use it freely with other 3D animation software and video game engines.  This includes characters, props, and animation files as well!

As a result of this, the market for iClone content is going to expand significantly, with users of other 3D software communities now able to access and utilize the affordable quality content that iClone users have thus far exclusively enjoyed.  This translates into a great opportunity for iClone developers to get their content out to a wider audience and benefit from increased sales and exposure.  In order to provide developers with more flexible pricing options for their content with this new audience, we are introducing a new content pricing format.  Developers will now have the option to add on an “Export License” fee to their content, which will allow users of other 3D software and game engines to export their iClone content into FBX or BVH format and subsequently use it in external projects.  Here are a couple of FAQs which will help to clarify how this will work:

What is the Export License and why do we need it?

The new 3DX5 Pipeline version makes all iClone content available to a much wider audience, and as a result makes it much more valuable than content for use on a single platform.  Reallusion felt it would be a prudent step to give developers the option to present a separate price for content that is export-ready for use in other software and that which is only available for use in iClone.  Therefore, we will introduce the Export License option so that developers can get more for content that now has a widely expanded audience.  We hope that this will also encourage new, professional content developers to introduce their content to the iClone marketplace, therefore enriching your content options as an iClone user.

How does the Export License work?

Currently, developers have the sole option of whether or not to add DRM protection to their content.  This means that content which is DRM-protected will show a watermark on any copy of iClone it is used within until that user pays the price of the content to remove the watermark.  However, despite this initial layer of protection, once normal iClone content is converted into another format, it will lose that DRM protection.  Therefore due to the export capability of 3DXchange5, we have built in a secondary protective measure within 3DXchange5 which will prevent the user from exporting any iClone content into industry standard formats unless they first pay the Export License fee for that content.  Once the content is purchased along with the Export License fee, the user may freely export that content into any format they so desire.

If the content is purchased without an Export License however, the user will be unable to convert the content into other formats such as FBX and BVH, and the export feature will not be available in 3DXchange5. The option to purchase the content with the Export License will be available on the content page in City Marketplace.

In the Marketplace, we will introduce a new feature to the system that will allow developers to authorize and add an Export License price to their content.  For content that has already been uploaded, users can do this via the new content management page.  For new content, developers may also add an Export License to their content via the Content Uploader.  This content will then subsequently be marked with an Export License icon when displayed in the City Marketplace.  That way, users who wish to purchase the content for external use in other software can easily search and access this content separate from the regular iClone content.  We will also launch a promotional page exclusively for export-ready content from our developers.  Reallusion will have external advertising banners on various sites that will link directly to this page.

In the City Marketplace, you will now see two pricing options available.  The pricing options will be a) iContent price and b) Export License price.  The iContent price will be the normal pricing for content that can only be used in iClone and is non-exportable with the 3DX5 Pipeline.  On the other hand, paying the Export License price will allow you to export the iContent you purchase to FBX or BVH format via 3DXchange5 so it can be used in a wide variety of other 3D software.

What is the implementation schedule for the Export License option?

In the initial launch stage, we will provide a limited selection of Reallusion characters and motions available for purchase with the Export License, which means that this content will be fully exportable to BVH or FBX format if the Export License is purchased.  The price that Reallusion has set for its export-ready content (content including an Export License) will be around 5 times the price of normal iContent due to its broader value.  After this, we will gradually phase in more characters and motions.  Once the 3DXchange5 Pipeline version has launched, developers will have the option to add an Export License purchase price to their content in the Marketplace backend.

We are currently implementing the option for Export License into the City Marketplace framework.  In the end of June, we will launch a promotional page featuring Reallusion content along with content from veteran iClone developer Big Boss, who has a wide selection of character model and motion content in his theme stores that provides an eclectic mix of quality game-ready content which will appeal to external users looking to test out the 3DX5 Pipeline.  All developers will be able to use the Marketplace backend to prepare and upload their own export-ready content to their own stores and theme stores during this time.

During the second stage of this promotion around late July, we will expand the amount of Reallusion content available for purchase with the Export License, and we will also provide the option to add the Export License pricing option to other iContent such as props.  In addition, during this time Reallusion will begin to display and promote export-ready content from all developers on the main promotional page.

Which content will be eligible for export?

During the initial stage of the promotion from late June until mid-July, the Export License will only be available for character and motion content (.iAvatar and .iMotion).  Once the testing of the mechanism is complete, all other iContent including iProps will also have the option to include Export License pricing as well.

Export License pricing will not be available for any iMaterial files such as character clothing.  Essentially, there is no way to protect this type of iContent from export, as it can be exported with a character once it is purchased and then freely distributed.  However, although iMaterial files will not have the Export License option, developers who specialize in this type of content will still benefit due to the promotion of the new open marketplace as their content is available to a wider audience.  In addition, the expanded exposure of base content such as the various CloneCloth templates make derivative content such as outfits made from iMaterial files more valuable as well.

We hope you are as excited as we are at this amazing new development in the 3D marketplace and the numerous benefits it will bring to iClone developers and users alike.  Reallusion hopes to continue expanding and improving these capabilities in order to bring you the most flexible and practical options for your story-telling and gaming endeavors, and at the same time expand the iClone user community to animators and game developers alike to enrich your iClone experience.  We welcome your feedback and useful comments regarding this next stage in Reallusion’s continual growth, and encourage you to expand your potential and utilize this new and powerful pipeline tool!

Best Regards,

Your Reallusion Staff :)

Hi, quick question...

Will particle effects that are attached to iProps go through the pipeline or just the prop and prop animation?

By KaiD - 13 Years Ago
At this time, the particle effects won't be able to go through the pipeline, however this is a function we'd like to support in future updates, so stay tuned!

Certainly all my concerns regarding 3DX are gone with this news!
As a matter of fact, being myself another "veteran developer" who started producing iClone content in 2008
I am very enthusiastic about offering many of my products for exporting to other platforms.
I will work with Alley Fashion Store and later with Prop Masters to expand the available line of products for 3DX exporting features!
Thankyou Reallusion for caring about your developer community!

I have read the info on the export license several times but just want to make sure I am clear on it......

If content developers upload complete characters (iAvatar) to their Marketplace created using G5 Clone Cloth, would this then enable protection?  (i.e. Gwynn Base character dressed using G5 Clone Cloth)

Once a character is purchased with Export License and exported in a chosen format from 3dxchange pipeline, is the end product still protected from sharing?

Finally, is there a charge from Reallusion to content developers for the ability to sell with export license.

This is excellent addition for customers and content developers, thank You very much!

Just would like to make one remark about buying products with Export Licenses --
I think it will good if in process of buying content with Export Licenses customer should accept EULA in which should be mentioned that he has no right to share and/or re-distribute content (or any parts of it) after export.
I think it is very important if customer will be clear informed about this.

A question for the RL team from a non-developer.

There are many, many users who are not content developers, but who offer a large range of items for free on the forum.

Will there be a way for these users to ensure, if they wish, that their work can only be used in iClone - and not exported and sold by others?

By bluemidget666 - 13 Years Ago
I am wondering if RL really want to fade out the G1-G2 characters at this point, well Cartoon masters especially as they are great for games and there is a game motion pack that works very well with that set, its nearly a 1 stop shop for a game maker ...:P

From what I understand, only content with an export license can be exported, whether in the marketplace or outside. Which also brings up an interesting question: what is the cost of an export license for free content?

By animagic - 13 Years Ago
The price that Reallusion has set for its export-ready content (content including an Export License) will be around 5 times the price of normal iContent due to its broader value.

It also seems that the price level of content makes use of the Pipeline only interesting for developers. Not all export will have a commercial objective in mind.

By KaiD - 13 Years Ago
Great questions guys!

In regards to iMaterial files, there is no way to add comprehensive DRM protection to them in the pipeline unfortunately. Once they are applied to a character with any CloneCloth, they will be exported along with that character regardless of whether or not they have DRM protection.

You will be able to set your own price for your export license. As I mentioned, Reallusion will set our content at around 5X the normal content price as a standard, however you can feel free to offer whatever price you wish. In regards to profit sharing, it will remain the same in that the percentage will be taken from the total sales price of the item.

For example:

1000NT item + 4000NT export license = 5000NT total cost

* Reallusion will take the predetermined profit share from the 5000NT, not different percentages for each portion of the price. If the export license is purchased separately, it will remain the same as well. You always gotta pay out to 'the man' :)

Once a character or animation is exported from from iClone with an export license, it no longer has any form of protection, as the iClone native DRM will be nullified. This basically means that it can be freely shared, although we sincerely hope that you respect the time and effort your fellow developers have put into their work and refrain from doing so.

In this regard, we are currently in the process of modifying our EULA to address these concerns. I'd like to reiterate that we take piracy seriously, and stealing content, especially from fellow hard working developers, is stooping pretty low. You all should know how much is put into all of the 3rd party content from dedicated people who just want to enrich the community, so show your appreciation for their hard work! :)

Is Clone Cloth on the way out?  Is G5 Cloth the last we will see produced by Reallusion?

In regards to iMaterial files, there is no way to add comprehensive DRM protection to them in the pipeline unfortunately

Given the recent demise of G1 and G2 characters, I'm wondering if Clone Cloth will soon be a thing of the past.  Makes me wonder how long it will before G3 and G5 Clone Cloth is obsolete too.  Many users have purchased a lot of content over the years!

I can see how the new export license will benefit the more advanced developers like Big Boss, Vit3d and Apparition who create their own fantastic mesh but not such good news for developers like myself who concentrate on the actual texturing of the characters. Since the arrival of the new 3dxchange, I'm sure I am not the only one noticing a decrease in sales.  iClone has always been just a hobby for me, however, I will be interested to see just where this is going.

Reallusion will take the predetermined profit share from the 5000NT, not different percentages for each portion of the price.

Is there any idea yet of what this percentage will be?  Also will it be the same across the board for all developers or only beneficial to the bigger theme stores?

Just my opionion but..... 5000 points for an item?  Oh my, wait till you hear the screams :hehe:

What I needed most in the beginning of my IClone adventure was to customize one clone celebrety and keep a same theme around him/her. This is now possible in a way many asked for, but still we need clothes and props, entire scenes and companions to use with them. (Speaking for myself.)

Being able to buy just one special clone and change it in various ways for ones own use and ownership is very important, so I surely hope we will still see clonecloth etc. and all developers being busy doing what they did with the same rate and rewards as usual, maybe even better in regards to rewards and income.

I can see a personal reason to use the pipeline version and pay the export licene fee for this purpose alone: Customize one special one for myself in each big project (or for someone else buying a piece of work, like a film) and otherwise stick to going shopping for most parts and keep it locked away from selling further out.

Further I can see a reason to want to use Carrara or DAZ studio (in my case) for a closeup of a special clone together with a figure or scene of which could be impossible to export or just want to use a function there for something. One example is the DAZ dreamhome of around 1 million polys where a couple of IClone fbx chars could have a fight or some romantic meeting and exporting the entire dreamhome to IClone would be quite some extra work.

CloneCloth isn't going anywhere. It remains an essential option for creating custom clothing.

As improvements to the bone structure of avatars continues we may see older CloneCloth varients being discontinued but that shouln't be seen as signalling the end of CloneCloth completely.

I think your services will be in demand for a long time yet. :)

for me personally, Pipeline would only be useful for either exporting motions, particulary if I got the kinect plugin or maybe using some existing characters such as Jana, Gwynn, Chuck Jane, Jack etc using my own heads to use in say Carrara or Houdini if I ever figure it out for special effects such as fluid sims etc to integrate in an animation.

I actually would not be all that concerned if I did not have it.
The upcoming facial animation for non-iClone characters in iClone excites me more.

I certainly can see the exciting possibilities with pipeline for gaming though.

I can use the exported motions to create skeletons to rig characters in Carrara which is one reason I would need to save my pennies for the kinect plugin and kinect, in order for it to be of use to me.
however so far though I have not been able to apply those motions to other characters in spite of renaming bones in BVHacker, I am probably missing something obvious.

ya, the gaming engines are especially killer in this workflow because they work closely with autodesk to get really tight imports. and I don't know if anyone has seen previews for the new UDK 4 engine thats coming out ....Its INSANE.....the default gaming render on UDK 4 looks like a ray trace render from max or maya.

FBX will always be a proprietary format to autodesk so if you really want to explore the power of this pipeline, you have to see who affiliates themselves closest with Autodesk. Everyone else uses SDK kits and makes their own home brew of fbx importers that are iffy, but certain companies work very closely with autodesk to make FBX a powerful format.

This is preview of what the next gen UDK 4 engine is capable of....OMG!!

dreamcube, that looks indeed very good and cinematic. Well, that would actually interest me: if I could export to get better quality renders.
By warlord720 - 13 Years Ago
Good news indeed.

For me... this is reason enough to get back to zBrush and character making as the mechanics of it are getting much easier to implement and the potential market much larger.

Like a lot of folks here I've had a lot of things pirated either by design or "accident" but you can't protect an open pipeline and a pipeline HAS to be open to function well. No away around it so the increase in price makes sense. For Vue products it usually twice as much for an "unlocked license" so not sure where to price... somewhere between the 2 and 5 times but not sure where.

If we do attract game developers then they should be used to this type of licensing. Great positioning for a product that just keeps getting stronger and stronger as it should move us into a larger market that is used to and able in most cases to pay more for the open version which a home or hobby user couldn't justify.

A simple question.  When I export a model in pipeline and the "buy export license"  does not appear, can I now use the model in Unity app and sell the app(Android)?

What will happen if I buy Monster Workshop and do the same thing with a model from it?

If I create models with the content that comes with iclone 5,  can I export the fbx without buy any export license?

Thanks

If 3DXchange5 Pipeline allows you to export without prompting you to buy an export license then either the content doesn't need one or you already have it.

For example, you do not need an export license for all the embedded content that comes with iClone (over 1,000 items).

I was wondering does the export license content over both iclone and other software or export content doesn't working in iclone and can only be exported. Asking mainly because export license is quite expensive i figure it should be used in iClone and other software

Hi..

The export license allows you to export your iClone content to other 3D software or gaming engines using 3DXchange 5 Pipeline. You do not need an export license to use the content in iClone and export it in video form. Exported videos can be used commercially or non-commercially without an export license.
