Is Iclone 5.12 incompatible with Kinect for Xbox plug-in?

I am sincerely hoping there is a misunderstanding here but I have my doubts.

After loading ICLONE last night I was prompted to do an update which installed version 5.12.

Through searching through posts this morning I now find that version 5.12 does not support the Kinect for Xbox MOCAP plug-in.

Is this an indication that all subsequent versions will not support the Xbox Kinect?

If this is the case it leaves people like myself who have spent a lot of money on the Xbox Kinect and MOCAP plug-in with a choice of not being able to install the latest version of Iclone or not being able to use the MOCAP.

Both of these scenarios are completely unacceptable and I hope someone will be able to tell me that this is not the case.

I have invested a huge amount of money in Reallusion products over the years but I will never purchase another thing if this turns out to be true.

Thank you

Hi toonarama,

Have a look at the last few posts in this thread:

Thank you Hgange

It was your post that prompted mine but i think you are being unfair on yourself.

It is not the customer's fault that Reallusion have encouraged users to purchase products with a built in obselescence of a matter of months.

I think Reallusion need to do something about this 9if it really is the case) because i think i have been charged for acting as a beta tester for something which has become immediately obselete

Thank you

Hi Toonarama

I can assure you that nothing has become obselete. If you are using the Kinect For Xbox sensor you can continue to use the original Open NI based SDK plugin (commercial use allowed) or the Microsoft Kinect SDK Beta for non-commercial use.

Reallusion has no control over the new Kinect SDK as these are created by Microsoft who set the licensing conditions. They have chosen to tie the latest release version of the Kinect SDK to the Kinect For Windows sensor. So Reallusion can't just ignore the license agreement and release it for Kinect For Xbox sensors.

Thank you Peter

However the question still remains of whether I can use the Xbox Kinect with Iclone 5.12.

The statement "the latest SDK in 5.12 is only compatible with the Kinect for Windows" implies to me that it is not

If i can't then I am afraid you have by default made it obselete.

Thank you toonarama

Yes you can use Kinect For Xbox sensors with iClone 5.12. You can't however use the new Microsoft Kinect SDK For Windows and must use the older Microsoft Kinect SDK Beta or the original Open NI based SDK.

Hope this clears up any confusion. :)

Would you know if RL is planning on updating the OpenNI solution to provide support for Auto Floor Calibration and Head & Wrist Movement?

Peter

Thank you for explaining.

Apologies for the rant but it really is not very clear! As Hagne states there needs to be a much better organisation of material so people are aware what is available and what is not.

I, too, find it all confusing. So much so that I dragged out my (XBox) Kinect this morning and plugged it in to make sure it still worked after the latest updates. Luckily, it does! (Though I'm unhappy after reading that head/wrist movement can only be captured if you have Windows 7, which I do not. *sigh*)

I'm afraid this is all very confusing and like hgagne is saying...you should have waited to release a product that would have changing requirements this soon.

RL should hire a copyeditor/proofreader (like myself :D as I'm now retired and could use some extra cash) to make sure that information is conveyed as intended, as we seem to have periodic problems. By simply moving one word, "only", all confusion can be resolved:

Please notice that only the latest Kinect SDK in 5.12 is compatible with the device "Kinect for Windows".

This is still a bit clumsy, but at least people won't get a fit, and, with some rephrasing, we can improve the language. As my wife just came in, I'll leave that as an exercise for the readers.

You can find a little more detailed explanation of the various Kinect options below.

Hopefully this will help clear up any confusion. :)

I'd be very surprised if we could get away with that.  When the MOCAP software launches and I clicked the Connect button, the error returned is that the device does not support skeletal tracking.

I suspect the updated .DLL's contain new API's calls that the MOCAP code detects and attempts to read feedback from registers on the internal systemboard components on the Kinect - registers which are likely not exposed (present) in the XB360 version of the device.

i suppose if it is at all possible, someone in this world will make it happen lol :D

How com nobody post a link to the original plug-in Peter is referring;I am so confused at this point; and not a happy camper!. it's really painful to realize "Kinect XBOX360 Sensor" SDK is that messed up from one update. I have try to re-install the damn thing many times(I don't know why I did that) but will not work. I suppose it doesn't matter if user purchased or are using "Kinect for Windows" or "Kinect XBOX360"...I don't know what else to do and I have a lot of work ahead of me. One of the main reasons I purchased "iClone Package" coupled with "Kinect" is to speed up the process with our on-going project;now we seem to be going no where.

Hi..

All the plugins can be downloaded from within your Member Account. Just select Bonus in your list of Registered Products and you will see the original Open NI based Plugin plus the Microsoft Kinect SDK Beta2 plugin and the latest Microsoft Kinect SDK For Windows plugin. You will only need one of these three options. You shouldn't mix the plugins.

Ok, I'm a total noob with animation and modeling.
So, if you don't have a kinect yet but plan to buy one and you currently have 5.12 iclone, can u still get the software plugins to use the Xbox 360 kinect for local or is it necessary at this point to get kinect for windows?

If Xbox kinect is an option, what are the limitations of the Xbox kinect versus the kinect for windows?
By rcsinger29 - 14 Years Ago
I am not a noob to programming (basics) and computers. I maintain a SBS network for an accounting office and am well versed with CPU hardware and software. Im just getting started with animation. I have Xbox 360 and all the kids are wanting the kinect. I was trying to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Hi..

The Mocap Device Plugin for Kinect For Xbox will continue to be supported and is very usable.

It really depends on your plans as to which model you should get. If it is just for fun then the Kinect For Xbox will be fine. Plus you can then use it with the Xbox 360 too.

If you plan on doing serious motion capture and want to use many on the new features coming from Microsoft, including facial animation then Kinect For Windows will be the way to go.

This is the version that will be updated by Microsoft to include enhancements and new features and is specially designed for PC's. Note: The Kinect For Windows device can't be used with Xbox 360.

How do you get the old drivers to use the XBOX 360 Kinect?

You can get the latest mocap device plugin from your Member Account. Just login and click Bonus in your list of Registered Products. In the bonus section will be the Microsoft Kinect SDK Beta2 version of the plugin. Just install this. No other drivers are required.
