Spray Paint a Wall with particles
http://youtu.be/TlKxWn1zk0k?hd=1The trick is to capture the final pattern as a background image. Place that image on a flat plane that fits the results and sits invisible until needed; behind the spray can, in this case..
The particles of course take some tweaking to get what you want; I.E. camera angles, patterns, lights, shadows, etc.., but the one you see here was processed with the spray can visible. After the particle was turned off or ended, I hid the spray can after pausing the play. Saved the resulting picture to an image and applied it to a flat plane that was placed behind the can with a starting opacity of "0" . The pattern of spray appears slowly after the particle has ended to reveal the pattern it sprays; Opacity "100". This is a time line transition, so you have to wait until the full pattern is made by the particle before the transition begins to appear on the background plane.
