Doing some research on using Daz in IClone I came across one tutorial that says you need to use the Daz Decinamator to reduce the models before bringing into IClone.

Is this handled when you use Exchange 4 to do the transfer?

they don't. You have to do it before the models get to 3DX or IC4 - High Poly Models Stress 3DX and Iclone a lot - makes them crash if it's too high.

You want your face count at around 30k - you can go above and beyond that till around 100K or so ...but it makes you want to throw stuff at your monitor and say nasty things to your computer from how much you see the performance suffer.

Do you have to use Daz's poly reducer? I have anothe one already. Can't I use that one?

@Dreamcube - Im sure you can, but I'd go through the preliminary steps first to get the bone structure aligned, and converted to a character, then like all the other iclone characters, export it to 3DX then export the head, body, torso etc and reduce the poly's piece by piece.

not to mention, this also would give you the option of say, leaving the head with a higher poly count but the rest of the body low - so you can get the best of both worlds. speed and quality. Smile

I've used Z-Brush's decimation plug-in on DAZ models and it worked fine. I think any decimation program will do the trick.

I guess the part I'm missing is how do I get the bones back into the mesh?
What type of export do I do from DAZ?

Those are great questions! Since I've only done the decimation on non-animated props I'm afraid I can't answer them. We need an expert! Anyone out there with experience?

High Poly counts aren't nearly as stressful on 3d Exchange as huge texture maps (4000 x 4000, etc.) - that's the real problem. There are various ways around this. One is to use the DAZ Texture Atlas. Another is to import your models into 3d Exchange without texture maps. You can apply the textures later in iClone where they can be manually reduced one by one in conjunction with your art program. Of course, they can be reduced in 3D exchange also BUT only if 3d Exchange doesn't crash from the weight of the textures.

Yeah, I saw the tutorial and they didn't reduce the polies at all.

I wonder if that's the main problem with most programs. Hmm... I konw I've tried animating in Carrara and it's just not doable because things get choppy so I can't key things right.
