So this was mentioned in the popeline thread.

It would be great if iClone could support PTex files.

What's PTex?

It's something Disney uses to get super detailed textures. It works by looking at how much detailed is in the texture and then makes more UV space for that spot. So in the end, you can end up with a LOT of UV maps.

A 3D painting program (such as 3D-Coat) can be used to paint this way. That way you aren't limited to how much detail you can put in a map. You can even have a full UV Space for just two or three polygons.

There's more info here.

Now, I don't know if realtime engines can handle this or not, but it'd be a great idea.

I'm also not saying that this should replace current texture methods, but it's an idea.

Any thoughts?

It's been a while since this was updated so I'll chime in here why this format is extremely important.

*It would negate the need for Triplanar mode and Anisotropic Filtration, both are very resource demanding, if removed could then actually increase performance for very high resolutions.
*Ptex like Vector graphics is scale-able so in theory we might be able to use smaller sized textures.
*Can work with texture arrays -also a way of increasing performance.
