Major studios have long been aware that the PIxar Look is getting goddam tired, but time after time, they have chickened out rather than embraced nonphotorealistic imaging. Then finally the Spiderverse guys took the plunge, and today, a toon look is recognized as the future of feature films.

There have been plenty of NPR animated films and series made before.

Of course this is only about Hollywood studios as being THE standard of animation and completely ignores what has been going on elsewhere for a long time. A pretty pretentious title too: "How "Spider-Verse" forced animation to evolve"

I am a big fan of stylized NPR animation I recently made a video about the subject.

Personally, I hate hate hate anime characters, but on Twitter, I often see clips of stylized anime VFX and time after time, nobody does it better than the Japanese. As long you can indulge them their continuing obsession with atomic explosions, sit back and enjoy the brilliant visuals.

I like Hayao Miyazaki (who actually hates the word "anime") and his films are certainly not about atomic explosions and the characters are well-developed.

The PIxar Look is becoming goddam weary, and major studios have known this for a while, but they have repeatedly backed away rather than embracing nonphotorealistic imagery. A toon style is now acknowledged as the future of feature films after the Spiderverse men finally took the plunge .

Unfortunately, this still shows a complete lack of imagination, as this will be rehashed and rehashed over and over again at nauseum, until we get sick of that too. Hollywood has stopped being a trendsetter a long time ago.

It is true that the "Pixar Look," characterized by highly detailed and photorealistic computer-generated imagery (CGI), has been prevalent in major studios' animated feature films for many years. However, the success of films like "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" has demonstrated that nonphotorealistic imaging, such as the unique comic book-inspired visual style employed in that film, can also captivate audiences and be recognized as an innovative approach. The decision to embrace nonphotorealistic imaging in feature films ultimately lies with the studios and filmmakers. While the Pixar Look has been successful and popular, there is always room for experimentation and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.
