I would like to be able to see more space around the actual stage - zooming out of the canvas. Is that possible? All I could find relating to zoom is the camera zoom. It should not change anything on the stage, I just want to "step back" sometimes....

If you select Camera Zoom (Z) you can zoom out. Alternatively you can just roll the mouse wheel. For increased speed hold Shift while rolling the mouse wheel. Please Note: Using Camera Zoom (Z) will not add keyframes to the Timeline unless you have Camera Record Mode active.

That still keeps the frame of the stage close to the edges and I need to zoom the content back into place. So this zooms content, not the canvas, which is what irritates me.

Thanks for explaining more. The Safe Area itself can be adjusted in Project Settings (CTRL+SHIFT+P). Just use the slider there to set the Safe Area to the size you need. .

Use your mouse wheel to zoom in or out.
