In this CTA project you will use the original Reallusion cat made famous by a lawyer who accidentally used the discontinued - Live! Cam Avatar filter in a ZOOM video call. The animatable project was recreated inside Cartoon Animator, which will allow users to animate the feline via mouse movements, audio lip-syncing, or facial motion capture using a webcam.
To use the facial mocap feature, you’ll need to install Cartoon Animator’s Motion Live 2D plugin with the Face 3D profiles for the webcam.

You can download the animatable project here:

  2. Open the “Cat.ctProject” file from the download file folder (/cat/Projects/cat)

  3. Animate the cat with a mouse using the Face Key Editor or the Face Puppet Tool

  4. You can add audio lip syncs to the cat using the Create Script Tool.

Animate the Cat with a webcam

Cartoon Animator’s Motion LIVE 2D mocap platform allows you to use a regular RGB video camera, or webcam, to quickly stream and capture your facial gestures to animate 2D characters inside Cartoon Animator.

Just follow the steps below to capture your facial performance. ( Watch video )

  1. Install a web camera on your computer.

  2. Install the Face3D profile and launch the Face3D Tracker for the profile. Make sure your face is shown on the screen through the web camera.

  3. Apply and select a character in Cartoon Animator.

  4. Click the Motion LIVE 2D button on the Add-on Toolbar. Alternatively, you can go to Plugins >> Motion LIVE 2D >> Motion LIVE 2D.The Motion LIVE 2D panel will show.

  5. In the Gear List section, find the Face3D device with a red hollow circle under the Facial group.

  6. Click on the hollow circle to activate it. The circle will turn into a solid green, indicating that the device is now connected to the Motion LIVE 2D plugin.

  7. In the Character List section, click the drop-down button beside the Exclamation icon in the Face column to assign a hardware (gear).

  8. Select the Face3D device from the list. You will see the icon of the gear shown in the cell.

  9. Click the Load Character Settings button and load the “Cat-json.json” file.

  1. Click the Preview button, and press the Space Bar key to preview your human facial expressions onto the virtual character. For better capture results, click the Set Zero Pose button to reinitialize the facial expressions to neutral.

No characters appear in the Motion Live 2D window. The default character is greyed out.
