I'm creating a custom hair piece from scratch and have only been able to import .obj files to attach to my character. Is there any functional difference to the end result between .fbx/.fbx key and importing an .obj file as an asset and transferring skin weights? Is the .fbx route intended mainly for modifying existing products with DRM restrictions in place? I'm not sure if I should be using one workflow over another. Any input would be welcome.

Hi... When you use Create > Accessory from the Menu Bar you can choose either an OBJ or FBX file. This method doesn't require an FBXKey and is functionally the same for either format. The FBXKey is automatically generated when you export out an FBX file from CC3 for further editing in 3rd party tools. The FBXKey is then requested when you import back to CC3.

Thanks for the reply! I think I can do what I'm after for now. I'm still unsure why I would choose one method over the other, beyond my own convenience. Is one method legacy? Is .fbxkey strictly for commercial content authoring? Does the pro version not include one of these options? Am I over-thinking this. I guess I'll just try to master both workflows.

As I mentioned previously the FBXKey is only used when you export CC3 characters OUT for further sculpting in 3rd party tools. You don't need an FBXKey when importing accessories, hair or clothing using OBJ or FBX. You just choose Create > Accessory from the Menu Bar and then choose the OBJ or FBX file you want to import. I'm also not clear what you mean by the Pro version. There is only the Basic version of Character Creator 3 which comes free with iClone 7, or the full featured Character Creator 3 Pipeline.

Sorry, by "pro" I meant the not-pipeline version. Where I'm confusing myself is that successfully I've exported morphed character bases in .obj and .fbx to Blender and Carrara and used them as reference to build polygonal hair on top of the scalp mesh. So in my mind I was exporting CC3 characters OUT for further sculpting in 3rd party tools. Then I was trying to separate that "hair" and bring it back as its own mesh rather than re-import the entire model.
So technically, I could just wing a hair mesh in my 3d modeler and bring it in with the Asset Import and wrangle to my characters head or I could round-trip an entire character with created or modified hair already attached using the .fbx key. I must have been breaking the character somehow in blender.
Thanks, again
