It's checked by default, which means I guess it's generally preferable to not apply shader settings? What does that mean and what's the advantage of that? I've watched every Reallusion video, and it wasn't touched upon. The only mention of it, was in one of the audio-less turtorials where the guy just sorta circled his mouse around unchecking the checkmark, I guess telling the viewer to always uncheck it, which basically means we want to apply the settings, since leaving the checkmark does the opposite.

What is it, and why is that the default? I couldn't find it in the CC manual either.

Hi,
since i couldn't find references to it either, i can only guess what it does from my experience.
Well, i found the name of that option a bit confusing too.

Checked - new material will be set, but the shaders don't change
Example: apply a PBR skin preset to a character with DH shaders, and the shaders should stay as they are

Unchecked - materials will not be set. Shaders change based on the two other options
Example: you want to convert a character to DH shaders, but leave the materials as they are

That seems to make sense, thank you for the explanation. Hopefully they add a reference to the manual.

BTW: for some reason, when i convert my 'old' characters to DH shaders, i need to uncheck that option.
Otherwise all the materials will be empty, everything is white Sad

Oh are you dragging the skin over? I used the "auto-convert" option in the materials tab.

Ok, the way i did it, worked for me (could see the visual improvements).
But now i wonder if the auto-convert feature does something different with the textures.
Have to check that out...

Cool, let me know, these are the little details I'm trying to work out. Like, does the auto-convert use 4K skin? Or are we better off dragging that over manually, etc.

Well, i just tested it with my recent avatar.

My conclusion is that the auto-convert function essentially does the same.
The drag&drop method does it for all materials at once.
Either way you have to set the shaders for hair and eyes manually.
Texture sizes stay the same. In fact, everything looks identically.
I don't even think the textures are converted at all, but i will do a test render later.

Okay, i did a render comparisation.
I have to mention that this character has only 2k textures.
Please keep that in mind.

Auto-Convert function used from the individual material slots:

Drag&Drop from a skin preset (invoking the shader convert dialog):

Hmm, so I guess there is no difference?
