The Augmented PSD Pipeline from Draw to Animate

In Cartoon Animator 4.1 (CTA 4.1), Reallusion combines CTA's intuitive animation tools with mainstream drawing software to swiftly turn illustrations into animations. You can use your favorite PSD editor (Photoshop, Krita, Affinity, Clip Studio, Painter, Photopea) to create/modify characters, props and scenes to animate in CTA.

Know More about CTA 4.1

New Features
  • Free PSD editor Plug-in, Photopea
    • CTA joins force with Photopea and provides this free PSD editing service to both trial and purchased users. It is time to say goodbye to monthly payment of Adobe. Furthermore, CTA purchased users can enjoy an AD free version.

  • Round-trip PSD Editing (Launch PSD Editor)
    • The icon of the selected PSD tool will be displayed on CTA tool bar. Set up under: Preference > Image > Image Editor.
    • Launch your favorite PSD editing tool directly from inside CTA, to create or modify assets like characters, scenes and props. Your newly modified assets will update in CTA simultaneously when you save them.
    • If you have already set animation keyframes to an image in CTA, the animations will be kept even after you modified the image in PSD editor.
    • PSD to Scene: You can design scenes in a layered PSD as manageable scene elements and send to CTA then arrange the scene elements with Z-depth. Use 3D Depths to manage your 2D Scenes.
    • PSD to Prop: Import PSD file as prop and apply Elastic Motion effects to generate organic animations or follow PSD layer naming rules to group items and set object hierarchy for Compound Prop Animations.

    • PSD to Character: Rig any 2D character design with the Free Bone Tool, or utilize Template Bones and the 360 Head Template, for biped human, and quadruped animals.

    • To make this round-trip PSD editing feature more accessible, CTA provides three ways to launch assets to PSD editor.
      • Toolbar PSD editor: After you setup your favorite PSD editor under Preference > Image > Image Editor, click the icon on Toolbar will import the PSD file. Modifications made will automatically sync to CTA.
      • Right Click: Right-click and use the "Launch to External PSD Editor" to export the selected object.
      • Scene Manager: Launch the entire scene to PSD editor through PSD Sync. Note, only a scene created in the exact same PSD editor can adopt this route.

  • Other Features
    • Dark Mode Switch, you can select your preferred UI (White/Dark mode) under Preferences > Interface > Dark.

Enhancements
  • Unlocked key will no longer affect general keys in the Timeline.
  • Editing locked keys will reflect correctly on the End Effectors included.
  • Delete locked keys will remove not only the End Effectors but related keys correctly.

Bugs Fixed
  • [User Reported, FeedbackTracker 6000] Possible crashes when removing character motions or applying character in Composer mode.

  • [User Reported, FeedbackTracker 6112] Launching PSD to external editor failed while applying G2 facials to G3 Characters.
  • Possible crashes while creating sprite-base head after importing PSD assets.
  • Some accessory props would become color blocked when launching to PSD editor.
  • Some PSD characters would not import to CTA4 - Make sure that the PSD image mode options are 8 bits/channel.

  • Some imported PSD files caused image blurring.
  • Possible crashes when import PSD file due to Face naming as Head in PSD editor.
  • Some projects in Composer Mode would crash.
  • Image layer order incorrect after PSD objects updated back to CTA4.
  • Using Layer Editor to adjust layer order was ineffective when combing props as a compound prop.
  • Login page displayed incorrectly when font size was over 250% while switching to 4K mode.
  • Using right-click to align previous motion clip was ineffective.
  • Some Power Tools 1 characters could not launch to PSD editor and displayed incorrectly.
  • G3 character would disappear while applying G2/G2+ eyes in Composer Mode.
  • G3 head could not connect with head bone when attaching Morph-based head to head bone.

Does anyone know if CTA-4.1 Pipeline supports GIMP as a PSD editor?

Hello - I have cartoon animator 4, but my Reallusion hub isn't showing the 4.1 update. IS this an update or a paid upgrade?

I read elsewhere in this forum that 4.1 upgrade is free but its for Windows only at this point.

If you have a Mac you won't see it in the Hub, but a Mac version should be out soon.

The "CTA 4.1 - Import Artwork with Auto Character Rig (Template Bone)" video uses blue 360 Head Template. Where can I get or buy these templates?
