Hi there,
Maybe it's a stupid question but I am asking myself if objects and figures of former projects that couldn't be rendered in iray have to be imported again to use Iray now?
F.e.: Got some DAZ-Figure that I imported via 3dXchange into IClone. As far as I know all materials are converted to PBL? So I got to re-import this figure?

Short answer = "No, you do not need to re-import."


Longer answer...  The Iray plug-in will "convert" your iClone materials to Iray-friendly materials and textures.  I am very impressed with how well the plug-in does that conversion.  All you have to do (in simple terms) is press "Render."  I have done that with iClone 6 projects, opening up in iC7 and rendering in Iray.  Having said that, you may find yourself wanting to modify some of your materials to take advantage of Iray's capabilities or to achieve a particular look.

The main thing I was alluding to is to apply "MDL" materials in the Iray panel.  (Material Definition Language)

If you want something like "real" glass or an emerald, or car paint with flakes (speckles) in it, you can apply an MDL to the object's material.  Several will then have parameters you can adjust (similar to playing with Substances), so you could adjust the color of the paint and the color and quantity of the flakes.  You won't see those in the iClone viewport because iClone doesn't know how to render them, but you can see them in the Iray preview window (and in your final Iray render too, of course).

It's a nice way to get something like "automotive" glass, which has a slight tint to it.

You can Google for free MDL files, and you can sign up (free) to get a starter library of materials from Nvidia.
