I'm about to start building one myself, so currently investigating options.

What is your budget?

I seem to have started with a £2500 Dell Alienware Aurora R7 spec, and whittled the component price down to about £1900 at the moment.  Hope to find the components cheaper.... Still looking!

Home built PC:- i9 9900K 32GB RAM, Zotac 1080TI mini.

No budget...want to stay under $2000
I had a salesman tell me that mine is a great machine and should be sufficient.
However, watching Kai's iRay rendering tutorial made me realize how slow it is. Sad

It looks like all you need is a new Nvidia GTX card. Get the best one you afford, and that works with your power supply. I think a GTX 1060/6 Gig is a good minimum. The more VRAM, the better.

Prices are way low for the GTX 1080Ti these days with the release of their new products. You have plenty of ram so the card should do the trick.

Thanks guys!
I thought getting twice the minimum "2Gb or higher" would do the trick.
Live and learn.

A 2GB "minimum" is actually "below minimum" according to most users here.

2GB = Tragic
4GB = Miminum
6GB = Good
8+ GB = Best

iClone 7... Character Creator... Substance Designer/Painter... Blender... Audacity...
Desktop (homebuilt) - Windows 10, Ryzen 9 3900x CPU, GTX 1080 GPU (8GB), 32GB RAM, Asus X570 Pro motherboard, 2TB SSD, terabytes of disk space, dual  monitors.
Laptop - Windows 10, MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 (6GB), 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD

It's sad that the RL sales literature is still not updated to what is realistic. "Minimum" is kind of a meaningless: it will perhaps open iClone, but you can't do anything with it.

I mean, the following for iClone 7 is so painful that it is beyond embarrassing, but it is what candidate users will see:

Dual core CPU
4GB RAM
5GB free hard disk space
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce GTX 400 Series / AMD Radeon HD 5000 Series
Video Memory: 1GB RAM
Display Resolution: 1024 x 768
Color Depth: True Color (32-bit)

It doesn't matter that the Recommended requirements are slightly better, the listed 2 GB VRAM is inadequate, as Viking points out above.

Also, salespeople in stores have usually no idea (they think in terms of playing games). It's better to ask here first.

How's an AMD Radeon RX-570 8Gb sound (only $260)?
A NVidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti w/11Gb is twice as expensive - but, I don't know if I'd gain that much.
I'm running 2 monitors and have a 600w power supply.

Certain features such as Global Illumination and the Iray renderer are only GPU-supported by Nvidia GTX cards. In case of an AMD card, those features use the CPU and system RAM, so they will be less efficient. To be further future-proof I would recommend Nvidia.

I have an Nvidia GTX 1080 with 8 GB VRAM and I run into limits, so 11 GB is no longer a luxury.
