Kelleytoons (6/9/2018) . Frankly, I would not advise anyone who does not own the Perception Neuron to buy the Leap right now, as it's just a waste of time).Well, I just bought the head-mount for the Leap motion controller. I'll receive it in a couple of days and I'll report back to this forum with my experiments. Let's see if I can do something halfway decent. I bet I could.

The problem is you still will only be able to use this process if you are recording live and overlaying to an existing clip. IOW, you can't create "hand" clips (you *can* create "fingers" clips, but those are much less useful). Recording the arms and/or hands can't be used except for that live record (can't be added to anything else) which means either you don't care for a whole body performance, or you have the PN and want to record all at once. I think that's possible -- you can certainly record a clip first and then do some overlay work -- but it's kludgy and won't have proper timing except in rare circumstances (the video Kai shows how to do this shows those very rare circumstances). For the rest of us Leap is just a one-trick pony.

pruiz (6/9/2018) I started a discussion - mainly so far with myself about getting leap motion to work at all - in the announcement page. Can anyone explain exactly which version of the leap installer to use (Leap_Motion_Orion_Setup_win_3.2.1 or Leap_Motion_Setup_Windows_2.3.1 or Leap_Motion_SDK_Windows_2.3.1) and with which iclone software components - Motion-Live-Plug-in-for-iClone and Leap-Motion-Profile-for-Motion-LIVE-Plug-in that works? I have tried all combinations (de-installing and re-installing) and cannot get iclone to activate or interreact with the device. Please if someone has the combination and sequence of install that has worked let me know. I'm giving up on a $200+ investment for now (and 5 hours of fiddling) that does not work at all for me. Could I be missing a component of software here? I think I followed the instructions as carefully as possible. Is there another motion -Live plugin or version that I'm missing?
You have the right Leap installer (3.2.1), there is only one Leap Motion Motion Live profile that you can use, so I can't think that any of your install stuff is errant. You did install the Leap Motion for Motion Live profile, right, the one you bought? With Leap Motion (1) When you do Leap Motion's own visualizer stuff, you see the hand on screen and can move them fine? (2) On the 'About' tab in the Leap Motion Control Panel it shows you the software and firmware version, what does yours show (mine is software 3.2.1+45911, and firmware 1.7.0)

or you have the PN and want to record all at once.
I spent an hour testing the perception neuron and it does work simultaneously with the facial motion capture but I wasn't able to use the leap motion controller at the same time. Even if my body motion is set to PN and the hands are set to the leap controller. There seems to be a problem running both at the same time.If I activate the leap motion controller I automatically loose my PN body capture.

Kelleytoons (6/9/2018) AFAIK you *must* use the latest Leap motion software, which is their Orion beta (which you can find on their main page -- they don't even list any other software). If you have any of the other stuff make sure you uninstall it completely (via Windows uninstall).
Then after that you need both the Motion Live plugin as well as the Leap plugin -- they are two separate items (right now you get them for the same price, which is discounted to around $90). With those three things installed and authorized you should be good to go (well, as good as the Leap controller would ever be -- as Tony says, it's either a toy or something you need to spend a LOT of time with to get something useful. Frankly, I would not advise anyone who does not own the Perception Neuron to buy the Leap right now, as it's just a waste of time). Thanks for the install instructions. Hate to ask a dumb question but I find the requirement terminology confusing - This is the list of software I bought Motion LIVE Plug-in for iClone | $199.00 | 1 | $199.00 | COUPON | -$99.00 | 1 | -$99.00 | Leap Motion 10% OFF Coupon | $0.00 | 1 | $0.00 | Leap Motion Profile for Motion LIVE Plug-in | $0.00 | 1 | $0.00 |

Do I need to buy something called "leap motion" as well.? Do you know - if this is the case where I can get the discounted package? I'm still trying to get this thing to run 2 days later.

That's all that you need to buy, but you DO need to download the freeware Leap Orion Beta software, direct from Leap's site. Install that first.

I've bought a Leap Motion sensor and tested it using the iClone trial software and have found it to be as unimpressive as you describe. I also noticed the pressing the space bar issue. I got 5 days before they put the price up so I will give it another go to see if it might be of use to me. I came accross this a while ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYTBIO5mrUw (Brekel Pro Hands Software) and might give it a go as I think you can download trial software. I know its not real time but if I can make a small library of hand gestures it would be of great use to me. Has anyone tried any Brekel software?

I've used the Brekel trial -- but it will only do fingers as well (it does them just fine, but no better or worse than the iClone plugin). For fingers I think the RL plugin works and due to the restrictive nature of how iClone sets up the files (so you really can only save fingers anyway) there isn't much point in trying anything else in that process. While I'm disappointed that forearms/hands aren't great, I do think Motion LIVE is worth it for the fingers alone, particularly if you are adding them "Live" to a pre-existing animation. I will be doing more tests on this in the next few days (been *real* busy with programming for a change) but I think Kai's video shows the workflow to be reasonable. Until and unless iClone changes the basic iHand format it's not really worth exploring further.

I'm doing some experiments with the Leap controller and its iClone plugin. This is my first one. I recorded the hand movements over an already captured animation. The first angle in the video is a medium shot of the woman's fall; the second angle is the close-up of her right hand.as she falls. I set the Motion Live plugin to capture the hands, not the fingers only and not the forearms. I also have a serious problem capturing the arms, but the hands and fingers are just fine. This was recorded with he table sensor, I haven't received my head-mount yet. Perhaps it will do better with capturing the arms.
