I use Sketchup for creating architecture modelling because I just like the way it works for modelling architecture. I also often do multiple groups and export them and yes, 3DXchange doesn't keep them separate when exported for iClone. There would be other ways and hope to see severl suggested (I might alter how I do things based off what I see other people do)
1) I import the Sketchup models into 3DXchange.
2) I untick the back versions of the models and hide them
3) I select all the front versions and export them as OBJ
I believe you could select each one and export to iClone only the selected one to keep them all separate.
Here is why I export them all as OBJ
4) I import the OBJ file into Blender
5) I select each object one by one and name it how I want it to be named in iClone.
6) I goto edit mode for the selected object select all and remove doubles.
This is the primary reason why I export them as OBJ and bring them into Blender.
It is amazing how many doubles get removed from content made in Sketchup and I'm not sure yet why I get so many?
7) I select everything in edit mode and create a UVMap for it and then edit the map to how I want it.
Another reason why I do this. Better control over the UV map that what I get in Sketchup.
8) Now I go to object mode select the object I adjusted and export it (selected objects only) as OBJ
9) now I load that OBJ into 3DXChange and export it for iClone.
10) Repeat steps 5 to 9 for each object.
11) Load all the objects into iClone select one of them and attach all the others to that object
12) Select the object all the others are attached to and save it as a Prop (or whatever I want it saved as)
Might sound time consuming but I don't find it too bad. Depends on how much work I need to put into adjusting the UVMap.
Everything else is very quick I find
