While rendering, Iclone simply freezes on an arbitrary frame. There seems to be no system to it, sometimes at 12%, sometimes almost at the end.Task manager says Iclone isn't responding, and I need to terminate its process manually. This happens with different projects and different render settings and file formats. There's no specific cause that I can discern. Did anyone have such an issue, and maybe has any tips on what the cause might be?

Render to image sequence (PNG is best). See if it still freezes and, if so, you will then know which frame isn't working and you can restart exactly on that frame to see if you can render from there. My gut tells me it's a codec issue (you really shouldn't be rendering to a compressed format anyway, except maybe for test purposes).

Another tip (from user raxel67): when ready to render, close iClone first and start fresh. The idea is that the temporary files build up and may interfere. I have found 7.1 actually better in that regard. EDIT: Just noticed that this is the iClone 6 forum. Are you on iClone 6?

Thanks for the tips, I'll try them (yup, Iclone 6)!
